FUELLING THE FUTURE

The LNG Marine Fuel Institute (LNG MFI) is an independent not for profit organisation established to promote the best practice use of LNG as a marine fuel.

LNG MFI advocates with and on

behalf of industry to champion

LNG as a marine fuel. LNG MFI

provides support, advocacy,

training and consultation to

businesses, governments and

organisations across Australasia.

Reducing SOx, NOx, CO2 and particulate emissions from ships ensures positive environmental outcomes now and into the future. Air pollution from ships contributes to ground-level ozone (smog), acid rain and water deterioration. Reductions in air pollution from ships will help protect our natural and built

world from the destructive effects of these emissions. Utilising LNG as a marine fuel will significantly reduce maritime oil spills. Global emissions reduction legislation from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), slated to come into force in 2020, will work to reduce these impacts.

EXCESS NOX ACCELERATES EUTROPHICATION, CAUSING OXYGEN DEPLETION THAT HARMS FISH AND SHELLFISH POPULATIONS.

LNG as a marine fuel is the first step towards helping Australia achieve energy independence.

Current reliance on imported fuels is concerning and an unsustainable model that undermines Australia's energy security.

Renewable technologies are only part of the solution to power the nation in the medium term. We envision a future for the LNG fuels industry where our marine, road, rail and mining industries are all fuelled by our indigenous gas.

Reducing reliance on imported fuels is important and LNG can help us get there. Developing new fuel technologies to power industry is key. LNG MFI’s future fuels initiative aims to provide support and funding to research

teams looking to innovate future fuels technology. Partnering government and private enterprise teams in a collaborative knowledge share environment will accelerate research and development in the sector.

PUBLIC HEALTH DEPENDS ON CLEAN AIRReducing emissions not only benefits the environment but has an important, positive impact on public health. According to studies in Europe, 50,000 premature deaths a year are linked to air pollution from ships.

A recent Chinese study found that at least 24,000 premature deaths per year in East Asia were related to air pollution from ships. These diseases were mostly caused by cancers, heart and lung diseases. These diseases not only impact health and social welfare, but also limit resources in an already strained public health system.

Globally, the marine industry is in a rapid transition to gas for shipboard power generation and propulsion. International regulations on the air pollution created by ships are becoming increasingly stringent.

Pressure for reduced emissions from ships is coming from both the IMO and the United Nations. The desire for cleaner fuels is creating a worldwide market for LNG as a marine fuel.

Australia is poised to leapfrog impending regulations by establishing early adoption of LNG as a marine fuel to provide the Australasian maritime industry with a sustainable and cost-effective fuel source.

THE FUTURE IS

CREATING BEST PRACTICEBeing at the forefront of a major industry shift means taking a leading role in crafting the industry’s future. LNG MFI and its members will work together to design best practice use of and creative solutions for LNG as a marine fuel.

ALONGSIDE MEMBERS FROM INDUSTRY, GOVERNMENT AND BUSINESS, LNG MFI WILL DESIGN AND PROMOTE BEST PRACTICE USE OF LNG AS A MARINE FUEL.

This best practice will help position the use of LNG as a marine fuel in a global context, ultimately benefiting all LNG stakeholders, including LNG supply chains.
