FEBRUARY 2017
From the Prez.
By the time you read this, the 2017 Swap
Meet may be over, but just in case it’s
not, I want to thank all of you who will or
did volunteer your time. Whether it will be
or was successful depended on your ef-
forts - so, Thank You.
In this months issue, we’ve included a
page defining items that are available to
members through the club titled “Club
Store”. Members wishing to purchase any
of the clothing items can do so by order-
ing them through “Creations by Ginger”
as outlined in the newsletter. Club
plaques may be purchased directly
through the club.
Summer is coming - I promise and with it
a whole host of events and shows are
planned. You can find a menu of those
“more local” events on the Club website.
The “new and improved website” is cur-
rently being worked on and updated by
our new webmaster, member Robi Nel-
son. It is up and running with more
changes and upgrades coming. An exam-
ple of those upgrades will be, attached
and printable applications for the shows
listed on the events calendar page, at
least where we can find one for the show.
In attempting to make our site more mem-
ber-useful, we will have many more help-
ful changes coming. If you have ideas
that would lend themselves to the site
and be useful to the membership or po-
tential members let us hear them.
Finally, I’d like to welcome NEW MEM-
BERS; Bill & Deb Cook of Astoria. Their
ride is a 1949 Chevrolet Styleline Deluxe
Coupe - we look forward to seeing it out
and about.
I’ll see you all at the March 16th meeting.

It was moved and seconded to accept the minutes as printed in the “BACKFIRE” the motion carried. The treasurer Burt Young distributed the reconciliation and profit and loss statement for members review. 36 spaces have been rented for the swap meet. There will be a work party Sunday the 19th, at Fred's store at

The 50's cruise artwork is done, and all major sponsors are signed up. Teevin Brothers will be our event sponsor this year. They donated $2500 to go toward the event. We are now selling trophy sponsors. We are working on getting trophy's and dash plaques completed. We are in negotiations with the classic trailer club, to get them to come show their trailers at the show. We will be raffling a quilt that Dorothy Gilles made. Tickets will be $1. If you want to donate items for the raffle, please let Dorothy know.
Dave Getchell is our new member. Art Stotts still needs your thoughts and prayers. The newsletter is doing well. Keep sending your articles! The February social will be at Ruby's Roadside Grill at 2:00 on February 26th. Gail Penuel has asked that if you go to any automotive event, to please take and send pictures to her. At the board meeting, the presidency updated the club bi-laws. An amendment was made to Article 1 section 2. You must be a member for 2 years before being elected into an office. Elected officers must be present for at least ten meetings a year. Article 1 section 4 updates the dues to $25 per year, with no pro-ration. Added section 5; Term for president and vice president for 2 years, starting Jan. 2018 All the changers were ratified by members at February's meeting. Ramblin `Round
With Steve
Behind the scenes, inside your club there is always
a lot going on that most of the membership is una-
ware of, particularly for those of you who don’t attend
meetings. That’s where the Backfire comes in -
keeping you informed. You can help the editor by
contributing articles or ideas for articles. All input will
be appreciated.
During the past month, the club officers met and up-
dated the club’s by-laws. Those by-laws were ratified
by the membership, at the February meeting. In the
following month, copies of the updated version will
be sent via e-mail to the membership, snail mail to
those without internet.
Also in the coming month, at our April 20th regular
meeting, Thad Nolan, Clatsop Comm. College
MERTS Automotive Tech department Instructor is
scheduled to attend to demonstrate to the member-
ship, the new oscilloscope that was donated to the
program by LCCC. Members of the class, through
study and familiarization with the equipment, have
been able to solve a mechanical problem that at
least eight other shops had not been able to diag-
nose. This points out the value of having the correct
equipment and training that today’s technicians are
required to have and the value of your clubs’ dona-
tion program. Plan to attend and see the demonstra-
tion.
Looking down the road, I’ve heard from Bill Jensen
of the Midnight Cruisers and the Push Rods that they
are planning their annual Spaghetti feed for the 26th
of March. I also received a phone call from the auto
tech Instructor at MERTS, advising me that the
MERTS annual Open House will be held on May 5th,
that’s a Friday. They will want us to bring our cars out
to show them. So - you have a bit of time to get them
polished up!
March begins the car event season, starting off with
our own swap meet on the 11th and followed closely
by the Portland Roadster show on the 17th thru 19th.
The Roadster show is always a good event to get
your heart beating with a look at some cool cars and
innovative ideas. Normally, several club members
attend that show - check around to see who’s going
and join the fun. The 19th is the date for LCCC’s
social at McMenamins in Gearhart at 2:00 p..m. If
your into the smaller things in life, there is always the
Pacific NW Model Car Fest in Milwaukie on the 25th.
On Sunday, March 26th the Midnight Cruisers are
hosting a Spaghetti feed at the Cosmopolis high
school.
April starts out as always, with the Portland Swap
Meet on the 7th thru 9th at the Expo Center and just
keeps getting busier, all the way through the 29th
with our very own 50’s Cruise Reunion at Camp
Rilea just south of Warrenton, Or. Just way too
many events to even begin mentioning, but definitely
something for all of you.
Remember - If you loan someone money and never
see them again - It was probably one of your better
investments !

This is the first installment of what I hope to
be a monthly report on club member’s cars and projects. This first installment takes us out to Fred and Ann Mestrich's hot rod shop. To say that Fred likes '56 Chevys is a bit of an understatement. In his shop I saw a '56 Chevy convertible, a '56 Chevy 4dr. hardtop, a '56 Chevy 210 2dr. wagon and enough parts to build a few more!
Fred's current project is his '56 2dr. wagon that most of us are familiar with. Fred first got this car in the late 70's, and finished it in '95 and has been driving it ever since. It was a great looking and running car with a 283 en-gine for power. Well, that's all going to be dif-ferent soon.
Fred has acquired a custom, lowered '55 Chevy roller frame. It is complete with a 454 Chevy crate engine, Muncie 4 speed, headers with custom exhaust, and a 10 bolt Dana posi. When I saw the car it was completely stripped inside and out waiting for new paint and complete interior. This is definitely a frame off restoration. This car is going to be awesome fast, low and beautiful. I don't know about you guys but I can hardly wait to hear, and see it finished!
Fred loves his 56's, but he also devotes time to his '31 Ford roadster. He just recently fin-ished Ann's baby, a'63 Mercury Comet con-vertible that is absolutely gorgeous. If you have never been to Fred and Ann's shop, you should try to get an invite. Fred has tons of hot rod goodies and memorabilia. I always leave there with a big grin on my face. On a personal note, I would like to thank Fred and Ann for being so involved in this club with their time and energy.

The request was simple enough... Write an article
for the newsletter. However, not so simple a task
for me. It was suggested to just submit a recipe.
But I wanted something MORE. And there on my
nightstand was the answer. The latest copy of a
favorite magazine - First for women. There must be
a terrific article I could share. I glanced at the cov-
er.. There, in all her radiant beauty is Jaclyn Smith
looking and feeling great at 71. But then my eye
caught " Live longer, stronger and slimmer Metabo-
lism Discovery - drop 21 pounds in 14 days just by
following Dr. Sara Gottfried's easy plan that turns
back your metabolic clock by 25 years in 2 weeks.
[Natasha loss 247 lbs.] Additionally, there were
three more posts that claim to give me all day en-
ergy, quick relief for five ailments and to top it off a
stress cure ...4 ways to master your moods. And
here I am on my way to new claims of stressless-
ness slimness and a more energized me. And
wouldn't you know it, there's two huge catch-
es ......one a terrific picture of mini milk chocolate
mousse cakes ; the other cheesy spinach cannoli.
In my dilemma, I take the fateful step of turning the
page and see their first full page ad. Tres Beauty 3
- what woman doesn't want radiant skin, shiny
locks and strong nails. What's a girl to do ! ? ! So
simple…
So there you have it; follow the advice of Jaclyn
Smith or a penguin. Personally, I will always
choose NATURE. Enjoy your life exactly the way
you are. Jul Grandbois
