Those who followed Jesus were families. Father, mother and children, who momentarily left their personal business to attend an event that was much more important to them, their salvation. They left their home, work and/or school, to go listen to and see Jesus. So when Jesus is about to feed the crowd that follows Him, He does it by splitting the five barley loaves and two fish that a boy, perhaps a child, wanted to share with the others. Jesus engaged the children and the young boys and made them participate effectively in His work as a shepherd. Today, there are families who follow Jesus, but notice that the youth who accompany their parents are less every time, bringing volunteers for the richness of the pastoral activity of the church to a minimum. The apostles can still tell Jesus "Here's a boy" and we better get to work so that there will always, be among us, boys to participate and contribute. It's not about turning our parishes into concert or dance halls, nor about making every Mass a reality show, but it is necessary that all children and the youth feel accepted and included, so they participate in the Parish life. It is the adults responsibility to take them to the community, motivate and encourage them to become interested in Christ, whom we follow. Young people must realize that Jesus needs them to feed this hungry world, and young people have that nourishment that the world is lacking: love of life, creativity, enthusiasm, the desire for justice, altruism; we need to envision what we are experiencing through youthful eyes. As adults we find it hard to coexist with young adults because of our experience and we believe we have nothing left learn. Young adults also have a hard time dealing with adults because they want to be valued as capable of giving a valid answer to life and don't want to be treated like children in the learning process. This coexistence is difficult in the Church level, but it is possible if we learn from our Christian families, the secret of that peaceful coexistence between different generations: love and affection. Grandparents put up with their grandchildren because they love them. Children are able to get along with the elderly because they learned to love them. Despite the rivalry between siblings, older brothers love and protect their younger siblings and, in the end, parents learn to understand and tolerate the inexperience of their children. Everything is possible if there is love. Within the Church community we can follow this family model, then the youth will have a place in it.

Los que seguían a Jesús eran familias. Papá, mamá e hijos que por unos momentos abandonaban los asuntos ordinarios para aten-der a un asunto que era, para ellos, mucho más importante: su salvación. Dejaban su casa, su trabajo, la escuela, para acudir a escuchar y a ver a Jesús. Por eso, cuando Jesús se dispone a dar de comer a aquella multitud que lo sigue, lo hace a partir de los cinco panes de cebada y los dos pescados que un muchacho, quizás un niño, desea compartir con los demás. Jesús involucra a los niños y a los muchachos y los hace participar efectivamente en su labor de pastor. Hoy, también, son las familias las que siguen a Jesús, pero notamos que cada vez son menos los jóvenes que acompañan a sus padres y que cada vez son menos los jóvenes que aportan su riqueza a la acción pastoral de la Iglesia. Todavía los apóstoles podemos decirle a

Jesús “aquí hay un muchacho” y más nos vale que nos pongamos a trabajar para que siempre haya entre nosotros muchachos que parti-cipen y aporten. No se trata de que convirtamos nuestras parroquias en salas de conciertos o de baile, ni se trata de hacer de cada misa un reality show, pero sí es necesario que los niños y los jóvenes se sientan acep-tados, incluidos y participantes en la vida de la Parroquia. A los adultos nos toca llevarlos a la comunidad, motivar-los a pertenecer y ayudarlos a sentir interés por Cristo a quien segui-mos. A los jóvenes les toca descubrir que Jesús necesita de ellos para dar de comer a este mundo que tiene hambre y los jóvenes tienen ese alimento que falta a nuestro mundo: el amor a la vida, la creativi-dad, el entusiasmo, el deseo de justicia, el altruismo; nos hace falta una visión joven de lo que estamos viviendo. A los adultos nos cuesta trabajo convivir con jóvenes por-que nos pesa demasiado la experiencia y creemos que ya nada tene-mos que aprender; también a los jóvenes les cuesta mucho trabajo la convivencia con los adultos porque desean ser valorados como perso-nas capaces de dar una respuesta válida a la vida y no quieren ser tratados siempre como niños en proceso de aprendizaje. Es difícil esa convivencia a nivel Iglesia, pero será posible si aprendemos de nuestras familias cristianas el secreto de esa convi-vencia armónica entre generaciones distintas: el cariño. Los abuelos soportan a los nietos porque los aman. Los niños son capaces de llevarse bien con los ancianos porque aprendieron a amarlos. A pe-sar de los pleitos, los hermanos mayores aman y protegen a sus her-manos más pequeños y, a final de cuentas, los papás aprenden a comprender y tolerar la inexperiencia de sus hijos. Todo es posible si hay amor. En la comunidad eclesial podemos copiar ese modelo de la familia y entonces los jóvenes tendrán un lugar en ella.
