A new auction item in 2006was to Send a Kid to Camp, whichgave guests the opportunity tosend a deserving patient to one ofmany Children’s-sponsored sum-mers camps for only $150 perticket. The bike was a hit, raisingmore than $12,000, sendingmore than 80 children to summercamp.
Guests were also able to guessthe number of balloons and golfballs in vehicles provided by ParkPlace Dealerships for the chanceto win the use of a Park Place vehi-cle for a weekend. Children’s pa-tient and Frisco resident, ConnorCruse, kicked off the live auctionby announcing these winners, and that set the stage for the restof the evening, which was full of excitement and competitive bidding.
Many familiar faces fromCollin County attended Saturdayevening’s auction party. DarrylReaugh and Marty Turco of theDallas Stars joined their wives,Kristin and Kelly, in the biddingwars, along with Rudy Andrea ofPlano, and his family.
Also in attendance were Chil-

This year, the tour-nament was again played withtwo rounds of golf on each course, one in the morning and one in theafternoon. With a wave of check-ered racing flags, Children’s pa-tients Katie Bieler and Connorkicked off the shotgun starts forthe morning and afternoongroups, respectively.

Water’s Edge Family Church, anew Christian church in Friscotook a new spin on vacation Bibleschool this summer.
“While many Lutheran church-es faithfully serve their communi-ties with classic ministries to fami-lies and children, the leaders andpeople of Water’s Edge find greatjoy in spicing things up,” said KimHuechtman, of Water’s Edge.
“So, instead of implementing atraditional VBS program this sum-mer, Water’s Edge sought to offer aministry program that could bringbusy families together in times ofplay, and at the same time give fam-ilies all around the North Texascommunity a chance to build au-thentic and enjoyable friendships. That’s how Fun Summer Nightswas born.”
For six Wednesday eveningsthis summer, Water’s Edge hashosted free Family Fun Night gath-erings that got all generations in-volved in challenges and events in-cluding water tosses and tricycleraces. Water’s Edge kicked off thesummer with a Family ScavengerHunt June 7, and then continuedeach Wednesday night with WackyFamily Olympics, Wild WaterGames, Cowboy Round Up, Fami-ly Movie Night and a Dessert Extravaganza.
Attendance the first weekbegan on the modest side, but asthe word spread and people
learned about the events, the Friscocommunity began to make FunSummer Nights a part for theirWednesday evening.
“The goal of Water’s Edge Fam-ily Church is to provide a safe, en-gaging and genuinely upbeat envi-ronment where those without achurch home can find a place toprocess the loving and truthful re-alities of Jesus Christ,” Huechtmancontinued.

Neighbors EDITOR’S NOTE
I began writing this columnat 32,000 feet, looking out thewindow of an American Airlinesplane, repeating the words “Ihate to fly, I hate to fly, I hate tofly,” but I soon calmed down andrealized that what I hate isn’t fly-ing, but taking off.
At 32,000 feet, the groundtakes on a view you just can’t seeat ground-level. I love looking atthe farms and watching cars, which look like ants with head-lights, drive around on the tinylittle roads below. That’s aboutwhen I decided to tell you a bitabout our trip.
During our trip to Utah tovisit family and snuggle grand-babies, Kerry, Rachel and Idrove over mountains, streamsand through forests and got tosee many of the wonders of nature.
We also had the privilege ofseeing our 5-year-old grand-daughter Kiara march in theFourth of July parade with herdance class.
She was the cutest one there,of course, with her blonde hairand bright blue eyes. All in all,we had a great time.
And even though I had themost glorious time with my fam-ily during the holiday, I found
myself thinking about the FriscoFreedom Fest and wishing Icould be with you at that cele-bration, also. I’ve heard a lot ofgreat comments about the eventbut haven’t received any photos.Send them if you have them.
For several years, Frisco hasbeen growing with leaps andbounds, and I’ve heard peopleask if it is losing its small-townfeel.
I want to switch gears a littleright here and relay an incident Iwitnessed Friday evening atPoppy’s Italian Restaurant atFrisco Square.
Kerry and I were eating ourpasta, and two couples came inwithin a few minutes of each andwere seated at adjacent tables.Small talk between the two cou-ples ensued.
I was only two tables awayand picked up from the bits ofthe conversation that the twocouples were strangers getting to
know one another. I have no ideawho the people are or what theydiscussed, but occasionally Icould hear questions like “wheredo you work?” and “how longhave you lived in Frisco?”
This exchange between tablesintrigued the journalist in me,and I began wondering if thiswas how people here in Friscosmall town get acquainted.
To my delight and the waiter’sconfusion, one of the visitingcouples picked up their saladplates, flatware, drinks and per-sonal belongings and moved tothe other table to finish theirmeal with their newfoundfriends.
I guess that answers thequestion people have had in thelast few years about whether ornot Frisco is losing its smalltown feel; the answer is a defi-nite no.
I want to thank those twocouples who chose to reach be-yond their personal space andstrike up a friendship. Seeingyou move together and share atable made my day.
Until next week …

Frisco Community Theatre’sdirector Shannon Campbell had abig problem — you could even callit giant.
“It’s not often that a directorgets too much talent appearing forthe audition, but it certainly hap-pened this time,” said Campbellabout the theater’s production ofJack and the Beanstalk. “Therewere so many kids with that littlesomething extra that I just could-n’t choose.”
Campbell came up with an un-usual solution to her unexpecteddilemma: she didn’t choose. In-
stead, she double-cast many of thelead roles in the show, particularlythose of main characters Jack andthe Princess.
Among others, Thomas Friendand Cooper Partin will share therole of Jack, Taylor Preston andJazmin Powers will split the role ofthe Princess, and the Giant’s Wifewill be played by both ChelseaUpton and Amelia Lieb.
Is this a recipe for double trou-ble? Campbell doesn’t think so.
“Each of the kids has some-thing special to bring to the show, and they all bring out the best ineach other. I think it will be one ofthe best children’s productions
FCT has ever staged.” she said. The encore cast, with Friend,
Powers and Lieb, will performduring Thursday matinees andSaturday evening shows; theBravo cast, with Partin, Prestonand Upton will perform Fridaynights and the Sunday matinee.Show dates are now through Sun-day, July 16, and Thursdaythrough Sunday, July 20-23.

Week 8: Inspiration
By SHANNON SWINNEY
This week flew by. I’m embar-rassed to say that I only got to thegym once. I have four weeks left tolose 5 pounds and need some inspi-ration. Yesterday, I found that in-spiration in Loren, a fellow mem-ber at the Frisco YMCA. I want toshare her story with you. Hopeful-ly, you’ll be inspired too.
“I have been coming to the Y forabout 7 months. I started comingto lose baby fat from my then 5-month-old. Well, 7 months later Ihave lost 30 pounds, inches every-where, increased muscle and feelgreat. I think I am in better shapethan before I had kids. One thing Ihave done differently this time isstay away from bread. I am con-stantly eating lots of foods withhigh protein. And when you have acraving for something or want anight snack ... eat a piece of fruit. Now, eating right and exercisinghas just become a way of life.
The last time I joined a gym was
before I was married, 8 or 9 yearsago, and it was a YMCA in NewJersey. I will say, the one thing Ilove about this gym is the conven-ience of the child care.
My kids have a great time, and Iam able to do something for myselfat the same time. Plus, I have fullview of the child care at all times. Also, because the gym is smallerthan others, I find it to be morepersonable. Everyone knows myfamily and me, and I know them.
I would definitely recommendthe spinning class for anyone whowants to burn lots of calories. Andthe flex class is great for toning. Usethem both together to see great results.”
I know that if Loren can do this,I can do this. She’s got children totake care of, and I’ve just got me totake care of — and my four-leggedchildren. I’ll remember her when Ithink that I don’t have the time orenergy to exercise or cook a healthymeal. Thanks, Loren.

After a week of dancing, cooking, crafting and more, 99North Texans are back from theMuscular Dystrophy Associa-tion’s Camp John Marc, a sum-mer camp for people with neu-romuscular disease.
“We’re just thrilled with it,”said Christine Kesling of Mans-field, the mother of 14-year-oldcamper Kimbell Kesling. “Thisis her week to get away from thestresses she has here.”
For many, it was a time to re-unite with old comrades andmeet some new ones.
“I talk with my camp friendsduring the year, but I only get tosee them at camp,” Kimbell said.“That’s my favorite part — hang-ing out.”
At John Marc, campers set uptheir cabins, met with their indi-vidual counselors, and startedhaving fun. Doctors, nurses andother staff were on-site duringthe entire week to ensure thehealth and safety of the campers.
Daily activities included horse-back riding, fishing, swimming, dancing, arts and crafts andcooking.
“My favorite part was thedarkroom,” said Kimbell, whochose to pursue photography asa special project during camp.
For many campers, this is theonly time they have to interactwith others who have a neuro-muscular disease. For parents, this free camp is often the onlyway to afford their children aweeklong break.
“If it weren’t for MDA, Kim-bell wouldn’t go to summercamp,” said Christine, whonoted that this is Kimbell’sfourth year. “I know that hereshe’ll have a wonderful timewith people who understandwhat she’s going through.”
“We are very grateful to ourstaff, volunteers and donors whomake this camp possible,” saidMarie Collins, MDA regional di-rector. “Because of their efforts,we are able to provide thesecampers with a free week of fun,
relaxation and friendship.”Campers returned to Dallas
at noon last Friday. For many itwas a sad parting, the end of aweek where disability did not af-fect the ability to participate, where for once they were allequals. But luckily, there’s al-ways next year to look forwardto.

Five Friday nights in a row, peo-ple showed up at Warren SportsComplex with their lawn chairsand blankets to enjoy the eclecticsounds of music provided byrecording artists Sara Hickman,Bruce Robison, Brave Combo,Terri Hendrix with Lloyd Mainesand Matt the Electrician as well asseveral local artists.
Hickman entertained theyoungest in the crowd with songsaimed at children of specific ages:newborn, toddler and big kidsJune 2. Hickman’s songs for new-borns are specifically designed forparents to sing to their babies. Hertoddler collection consists of 31one-minute songs and stories andthe Big Kid collection is for the pre-teen crowd. Sara’s live shows al-ways involve the audience, no mat-ter how young, or young at heart, they may be.
Robison, who makes his livingas a songwriter and singer, stepped
on the Frisco stage June 9 to acrowd of about 300. Robison haspenned chart toppers such as“Travelin’ Soldier,” No. 1 hit for theDixie Chicks, “Angry All the Time,”performed by Tim McGraw andFaith Hill, and “Desperately,” per-formed by George Strait. Othersartists who have recorded Robi-son’s songs include Lee Ann Wom-ack; Gary Allan; Allison Moorer;his wife, singer Kelly Willis; andhis brother Charlie Robison.

concert-goers June 30. After yearsof steadily building a devoted fanbase, some would say that MattSever’s unassuming image andnice guy blue-collar charm, com-bined with his guitar skills andvocal talent, has won Sever a fol-lowing of many fans in Texas andbeyond.
During the concerts, the audi-ences sang and danced along withthe headlining Texas singer-song-writers, and they enjoyed beautifulTexas sunsets and nice summerbreezes.
