Abstract

Social Business is NOW. Harness the power of the Four Cs to enable your users to Connect, Communicate, Co-ordinate and Collaborate using the Social Sensation - IBM Connections , and the Productivity Powerhouse - IBM Lotus Notes . This session is packed full of techniques and demonstrations that you can take back to your workplace to help you Evangelize, Educate and Energize your users to Get Productive, Get Social and Do BUSINESS!

Agenda

Understand the problem

iSee, The Solution

Use the FourCe

Get Productive, Get SOCIAL and DO Business!

The Problem

The realisation that there is a problem with the way we currently work

Is this you?

Tired of Knowledge Management via email?

Endlessly responding to requests for the same information from other team members?

Unable to access historical information in relation to your role or project?

What typically happens

User creates content

Names and stores it

Other users cant find it!

MIGHT be able to locate the original author

The Email chain begins

When content is SENT

Send:Only involves those addressed in the message

Precludes new team members

No historical reference.

Understanding the Problem

Is there a file or communication that contains the content I need?

Where is it?

I can't find it!

I am not authorised to access that folder!

Who might know where it is?

Do I know how to connect with the person responsible for that content?

Do I REALLY want to flood peoples Email?

WHERE is the AUTHORITATIVE content?

Recognising that File System 1.0 has failed us!

User names a file: Current.doc

Places it into a secured folder:Share \ IT \ Infrastructure \ Management

File has context ONLY because of it's Location

File is relevant only in that place in space and time

someone moves the file, or worse: emails it!

The file is no longer relevant because it has no context!

The Awakening

While 'Content is King', it's PEOPLE that create, manage and maintain that content.

The Solution is Social!

Connect with the PEOPLE Connect with the CONTENT!

Social is simple

it's an enabler for your own personal and professional development,

it's about sharing the knowledge you have,

it's giving others access to that knowledge, and

it's enabling others to benefit from your experience.

This is NOT the time to be scared of the Social 'Buzz'

You have been doing it your entire lifeIn the playground as a child

In the classroom as a student

In your workplace as a professional

In any environment with your 'Connections'

And more recentlyOnline with Social Media tools, such as:Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Picasa, Slideshare, Tumblr, Blogger, Wordpress, Skype,

Google+, PingFM.

iSee

The process for becoming a social champion

The 'i' in iSee

invest

The seeds you sow ...
determines the harvest you will reap.

Invest

The more you Invest, the more valuable you will be seen as a potential connection.

By Investing your knowledge, you are increasing recognition with your connections and your wider network regarding your expertise.

The people YOU are connected to expose you to a wider network

iSee that TAGGING, ROCKS!

File System 1.0 concepts are DEAD!Placing files in a location in space and time has failed me

I can't find the information relevant to me

I can't remember what I called the file

I put it in the wrong place!

Tagging:Is an attribute of the content

Can never be lost'

Move the content, retain the Tags

When Emailed or Sent retains it's context

Allows me to refine searches and filters based on the TAGS

iSee that:

Tools, such as:Profiles

Wiki's

Blog's / Micro-blogs, and

Discussions/Forum's

Are the places where my 'social' investment is required!

iSee the importance of Profiles

Detail qualifications and experience

Provides contact information

Shows activity and interaction

Allows access to that person's CONTENT

iSee the importance of Wikis

Wiki's are reference documents that others may use as an authoritative guide

Are SECURED, by default

Can be SHARED at any time

They have an AUDIT TRAIL

Can be easily VERSIONED

iSee the importance of Blogs

Blogs: express an opinion, detail an experience, or share a discovery, which invite others to interact through comments

Micro-blogs are smaller expressions of opinion and the fastest way to communicate and provide immediate feedback

Comments are how you respond and contribute

iSee the importance of Forums

A concentrated, permanent discussion thread

Topic focussed

Response based

iSee the importance of SHARING

SHARING rather than SILOing meansOne authoritative reference

Easy Access for other Team Members

Historical reference for new Team Members

Relevant Tags that categorize my content make it easier to locate and filter

Once you invest, you need to See

The 'C' in iSee:

'Use the FourCe Luke, Use the FourCe'

The Social era adds a new C

Connect

Communicate

Co-ordinate

Collaborate

Connect

Profiles show qualifications and experience,

Activity to determine relevance,

'Investment' to identify expertise

Communicate

Start the conversation

Open conversationStart a Discussion

Post on a 'Wall'

Reply with a comment

Private conversationInstant messaging

Email

Beware of 'closing the lines of communication', the antithesis of 'social'

Co-ordinate

Gather the team

Determine availability

Choose the tool

Schedule the Actions

Collaborate

USE the Tool!

SHARE the content!

Beware!

If you always do what you've always done,
you'll always get what you've always got!
