 Conceived  by  current  and  former  foster  youth,  FYM  is  the  largest  collection  of  art,  artifacts  and  video  portraits  about  youth  experiences  in  foster  care.

feel like their a part of it and there is a role for them begin to ask questions and not just make assumptions

first steps in for visitors take the time to reflect on their own childhood and how it relates to foster youth feel social responsibility to be a part of our society as a whole, members of this

community. know what to do if this experience triggers concerns

there are many different reasons for being in foster care experience the truths and have their stereotypes illuminated

have a lived, physical experience in the exhibition acknowledge that it exists.

awareness and respectfulness for the space this is a story of resiliency

have tools to act in their own community. acknowledge that foster care exists and the aspects that need improvement

understand how they can give, invest in change who are you and how can your talents be useful

target towards young people to act awareness of the progress that former foster youth have made and that we’re on a

continum of growth explore the different environments of foster youth, drop into an experience

understand what it’s like to adapt so often in so many different ways understand what it’s like to be a foster youth and the underlying trauma

will have an emotional impact that builds connection learn about with and from the youth with cultural dignity

will know the facts experience in a safe environment

understand and learn trends in parenting recognize toxic or abusive ways of parenting

understand the root causes. there is no one story, this exhibit shows many different perspectives

see the hardship and the impacts and strengths that have resulted from that see success stories

leave with resources available to foster youth everyone can and does have an impact on foster youth

BIG THEMES: be empowered with tools, resources and information to take action.

leave with an overall understanding of the complexitities and history of foster care start to finish and there is no one story.

understand the diversity of humans engaged in this way. reflect on the root causes (and complexities) and the definition of what a family is.

think about this in a broader cultural way. viseral, emotional experience that will create empathy without othering.

understand the specific environments youth are in. understand the different roles.

will use these experiences as tools for growth and strength. see foster youth as powerful (opportunity youth) from at risk to at promise, see

the value and strength. use the exhibition as a unique and tangible way of understanding the foster care

system for themselves. opportunities or spaces specifically for foster youth.

provide the right resources specifically for foster youth in this community. many opportunities for youth to drive the activation of this exhibition in their own way. understand that this exhibition was made with youth and focused on foster youth in

Santa Cruz County.
