Playing without their starting guards the Tribune Jackrabbits boys lost at Leoti and Dighton this past week. At Leoti on Tuesday, Jan. 28, the Tribune varsity boys lost to the Indians 43- 57. The Tribune JV lost a two-quarter game 15-32. At Dighton on Friday, Jan. 31, the varsity boys lost 22-54, and the JV lost a two-quarter game 17-32. At Leoti the Indians jumped out to an 8-0 lead and led 12-4 after one quarter of play. Alvero Bello-Marabe made a first quarter field goal and Valentin Villalobos made 2 of 2 from the line. Jaxson Brandl hit twice from the field early in the second quarter to bring the Jackrabbits to within four points but the Indians scored 16 second quarter points to take a commanding 28-13 lead at the half. Three Tribune players were in double figures with Cade Mangan hitting 11, Jaxson Brandl and Alevro Bello-Marabe 10 each. “We played all right,” remarked Tribune coach Josh Gooch. “We just turned the ball over too many times at critical points in the game. It might help us in the long run. It could have been a good game it we were 100%.” At Dighton on Friday, the Tribune boys were never in the game. The Hornets took a 21-2 first quarter lead and were never threatened on their way to a 54-22 win. Cade Mangan led the Tribune scoring with 11 points. “Dighton came out and hit their shots,” remarked coach Gooch. “We had a lot of open shots, we just didn’t make any of them. They rebounded well and got easy baskets. “We had a mental block. Hopefully we can get over it and move on and get ready for the last little bit of the season.” “In the long run we are still sitting well for regionals. In games this past week the Tribune varsity girls beat the Leoti Indians 47-34 in a game played in Leoti on Tuesday, Jan. 28. At Dighton on Friday the Tribune girls lost a hard-fought game 57- 61. At Leoti Myla Reynolds and Genesis Valenzuela scored the only first quarter points as Tribune trailed 4-5. Kamryn Youmans, Mattie Brandl, and Grace Whitham joined with Myla and Genesis with 2 nd quarter field goals for a 17-9 lead at the half. Tribune continued their scoring with 18 third quarter points and coasted to a 47-34 win. Seven Jackrabbits broke into the scoring column. Mattie led the way with 10 points. Lauren Crotinger, Myla and Grace each scored 8, Kamryn 7, Genesis 5 and Kylie Guessen 1. “We came out focused defensively against Leoti,” remarked Tribune coach Justin Sherer. “We couldn’t get any shots to fall in the first quarter of the game. Once we put the press on and got some easy buckets things kind of opened up for us. We were able to work on some things that we’ve been going over in practice and were able to use them in the game. I am thankful to get another win and to see our balanced scoring return as well.” At Dighton Lauren Crotinger found her shooting touch with 6 first quarter points. Mattie scored 4 first quarter points, Kamryn 2 and Myla 1. Despite their good start the Tribune girls trailed 17-13 after one quarter of play and 23-32 at the half. Tribune scored 17 points in both the third and fourth quarter to close the gap, but Dighton pulled out the 61- 57 win. Tribune had a balanced scoring attack. Lauren scored 17, Mattie 11, Kamryn and Myla 10 each and Grace 9. “Dighton always seems to be a tough team,” remarked coach Sherer. “It was their homecoming and they were fired up and ready to play. Our girls did a good job of sticking with them and we went into halftime down by 9. Dighton came out of halftime shooting the ball really well. Our girls did a really good job of staying with them and we outscored them in the second half. We had multiple opportunities to take the lead toward the end of the game, unfortunately we didn’t hit our free throws and Dighton ended up pulling it out. “It was a fun game to be a part of and an aggravating one to be a part of at the same time. I know the girls were frustrated by the free throws but they played a good game and fought all the way to the end.” Tribune will play their next game at Oberlin on Feb. 7 before having a home game on Tuesday against Syracuse and a homecoming game on Friday, Feb. 14 against Deerfield. Playing without their starting guards the Tribune Jackrabbits boys lost at Leoti and Dighton this past week. At Leoti on Tuesday, Jan. 28, the Tribune varsity boys lost to the Indians 43-57.
