LOS PRIMEROS SCHOOL OF SCIENCES & ARTS
PANTHER PRESS
November is a time to give thanks. The Los Primeros PTO is thank-
ful for the wonderful staff and the many parent volunteers that make
a difference in our childrens' education everyday at LPSSA. We
are thankful for the generosity of families here at LPSSA and busi-
nesses in our community that sponsored our Jog-A-Thon. Instead of
using the yellow pages, reach for your child's Jog-A-Thon shirt. Sup-
porting the businesses that support our school is the best way to
thank them.
Our most important fundraiser of the year is finally here, the Jog-A-
Thon! Your support of this event is vital to keeping our programs go-
ing here at LPSSA. If we raise $30,000, Mrs. Silverman will wear a
banana suit for a full school day. Just imagine her directing traffic in
the drive-through dressed like a banana! If we raise $40,000, Mrs.
Silverman will wear the banana suit AND we will celebrate by giving
every student a fabulous frozen treat & the teachers will receive a deli
lunch. Go bananas, get out there and get those pledges! If every stu-
dent raises $75 in pledges we can reach our goal. Don't for-
get to ask your employer about matching funds.
Please join us for some family fun at our Barnes & Noble Book Fair
event on Wednesday, November 10, through Friday, November
12. It's the perfect place to spend the Veteran's Day holiday with your
kids.

It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is already here and that the first trimester of the 2010-11 school year is coming to an end. A question often asked of teachers is, “What can I do at home to help my student achieve success in their daily academic endeavors?” As we know, students learn in many different ways. Some learn best by hearing things (auditory), some learn by seeing things (visual), and others learn best by doing things (kinesthetic). When planning les-sons, teachers take these different learning styles into consideration, and so can you when helping your son/daughter with their home learn-ing. The following are suggestions which might help you to better help your student.
Visual Learners learn through seeing and imagining. Studying is
easier for them when they concentrate on how things look. Some tips for visual learners are:
· Organize assignments by writing them down, making checklists, and using a calendar or planner.
· Assign each class a color. For example, use a red note-book and folder for math, a blue for reading, etc.
· Visualize things being studied. Imagine how a historical event might have looked or how a science concept works.
· Take notes in creative ways. Draw pictures, make charts, or create a time line.
· Use color to make things stand out. For example, high-light key words in notes or write spelling words in differ-ent colors.
· Make flash cards.
Kinesthetic Learners use their bodies and sense of touch to
learn. Since they like being active, it can be hard for them to sit still while working. Some tips for kinesthetic learners are:
· Let your child move around while studying. · Physically organize assignments. Make a pile of things
to do, with the most important on top. · Use objects to explain concepts. For example, cut an
apple into fourths to teach division or fractions. · Relate learning to physical experiences. If your child is
studying gravity, for instance, talk about how when he jumps up, gravity brings him back down.
· Act out an event or concept being studied. Parents can help by playing a role.
· Practice spelling words with magnetic letters or Scrabble game pieces.
· · (Continued on page 8)

Auditory Learners gain knowledge through listening. It is
easiest for them to remember things they’ve heard. Some tips for auditory learners are:
Tell a story about subjects being studied. For example, describe what it was like to live during the Gold Rush.
Make up songs, poems, or raps about study material. Review out loud. Recite things such as spelling words or
math facts. Parents can help by giving oral quiz-zes.
Listen to someone read. Or read along while listening to a book on tape.
Explain a concept to someone else. Describing it out loud can improve memory.
“Write” the first draft of a paper by saying it on tape. Then transcribe the words onto paper.
(Ideas taken from Making the Most of Learning Styles, by: The
Parent Institute)
As you can see, there is no “best” way for children to learn. By helping your child to identify study strategies which work for them will provide them with a skill for life long learning. Happy Studying!!
