Monty Lewis was hoping forsomething to get his 2013 season rollingin the right direction, and he found it atthe Clark County Fairgrounds.

The 2004 tie-down roping worldchampion didn’t have a win or a bigcheck cashed in the last few months, butthe $5,207 haul from winning the ClarkCounty Fair & Rodeo, a silver stop on theWrangler Million Dollar Tour, presentedby Justin Boots, changed all that.

“The winter has been tough for me,and hopefully this will start me off tobigger things,” said Lewis, who won theaverage with a time of 18.5 seconds ontwo head. “I was hoping I’d win itbecause I’ve never really come close towinning at Logandale before, and this isprobably the only major rodeo in April Ihadn’t won in my career.”

Lewis, of Hereford, Texas, tied downhis first calf in 9.4 seconds, and thenfollowed that with a 9.1-second effort inthe second round to edge runner-up Paul David Tierney of Oral, S.D., by a .7 margin.

“The calves were uneven and the startwas tricky, but I had two calves that laidfor me,” he said. “There was a lot ofguessing in the start and I guessed right.Once you get the first one down quickly,it opens the door. But I do think you hadto be lucky there this year to win it,because it was a tough competition.”

Although his season wasn’t off to thebest start, Lewis didn’t concern himselfwith the mini-drought he was facing,because he’s been in this situation beforeand still made a run to the WranglerNational Finals Rodeo.

“I’ve been going to all the big rodeos,but I don’t go crazy in the winter,” he saidof his slow start. “The winter is a luck-festand a lot of things need to break yourway. I’m not too worried about it becauseI was in the same spot last year at thistime and still had a great year. I’m lookingforward to the rest of the month now.”

Lewis also pointed out that not beingin the top 50 in the world standings atthis point in the season didn’t concernhim, either.

“Look, when things are going yourway, rodeoing is easy, but when theyaren’t, it gets pretty difficult at times,”Lewis said. “But as a guy who has hadsome success, it’s nice to remind yourself

that you can still win a big one. I justwanted a kick-start to this season and itsure looks like I got one.”

Shane Erickson showed up at the RamNational Circuit Finals Rodeo as a bit ofan unknown quantity. That’s no longerthe case.

The Columbia River Circuit cowboystood tall when the spotlight shinedbrightest and walked off with all-aroundhonors, the team roping title (with JadeCorkill) and a prize money total of$25,502 that broke both the RNCFR all-around and overall records.

It was nearly a $3,000 improvement onthe overall record of $22,598, set by J.W.Harris in the 2009 bull riding competition.

“It’s been a great week, kind of adream come true, especially to win asmuch as I did,” said the soft-spoken, 32-year-old Erickson. “A lot of people don’treally know me, so I wanted to do wellhere this week.”

Erickson also earned third-placemoney in the tie-down roping whileimpressing fans and announcers with hisskill and professionalism in both events.That didn’t change Erickson’s humbledemeanor, though.

“I had the best heeler in the world,” hesaid, “so I just had to do my job.”

Corkill, the reigning world championheeler, was competing at the RNCFR forthe first time. It was also the first timehe’d roped with Erickson, who wasmaking his sixth RNCFR appearance.

“Shane ropes really good, so I didn’thave to change anything,” Corkill said.“We improved each round – we had ourbest time in the semifinals (5.0 seconds) –and got to go last in the final round, whichis a big advantage, especially when twoguys missed in front of us.”

Billy Bob Brown is a busy man thesedays. The 21-year-old roper is workingtoward his degree in agriculture business

at Tarleton State University, competing ata high level on the school’s rodeo teamand acting as college rodeo’s StudentPresident of the Southwest Region. Oh,and he’s winning PRCA rodeos.

Brown won the all-around and tie-down roping titles at the ABC ProRodeo inLubbock, Texas, March 28-30, earningmore than enough to fill his permit. Hehas a plan for his rodeo career, and it’sworking out very well so far.

“I have another year until I graduate,and I’m going to get my degree before Iturn pro and get my PRCA card,” said theCarbon, Texas, native. “After I graduateI’m going to try to rodeo and go back tothe ranch and run cows with my dad.”

Brown’s run of 7.8 seconds wasenough to edge Ryan Thibodeaux by .3seconds and earn $1,972, nearly twicewhat he needed to fill his permit.

However, Brown has designs onmaking his rookie push in 2014 after hehas a diploma in his hand.

“It was exciting to be able to win boththe tie-down and all-around at a rodeolike this one; that was the biggest singlecheck I’ve ever won,” he said. “Myparents got to go with me and see mewin, which was special.”

Brown’s college teammate, RichieChampion, took second in the barebackriding in Lubbock. It isn’t an unusualoccurrence to see the college kids fromStephenville, Texas, doing well in PRCA rodeos.

“It’s nice to see that we can win at thecollege level, but we can also step up andwin or place really high at the pro level,”said Brown, who currently leads the all-around, team roping header and tie-downroping standings in the Southwest Region.“I always like to see my college teammatesgetting it done at the highest level.”

Coming out of high school, Brown wasan accomplished basketball player,garnering scholarship offers from DivisionII schools to shoot hoops instead ofthrowing loops.

He says as much as he lovedbasketball, it was never his dream likerodeoing was.

“I worked at rodeo my whole lifegrowing up and it’s always been mydream,” he said. “You need to have adifferent kind of work ethic for rodeothan other sports. Doing multiple events,you have to be so dedicated, and I lovethat part of it. I want to win all-aroundworld titles.”

We also had theprivilege to award several young men withover $5,500 in scholarships that were donated.Congrats to Seth Cooke for winning grandchampion, $1,000, and Cooper Martin forreserved champion, $500, in the SecondAnnual Brody’s Shootout of Champions.

n the busy world of today, it’s easy to find yourself with your

head down and living as fast asyou can. Though our hectic livesand schedules are self-designed, Ibelieve it’s important to be stilland quiet at times. Godcommunicates with us in manyways and I don’t want to miss outon that.

When I was younger I felt likeGod needed me to accomplish hismission. I thought I needed togive God the glory and publicrecognition first and foremostwhenever I won. With maturity

I’ve realized that while it’s neverbad to give God the glory, I nowknow He will accomplish hismission with or without me. If I’mtoo busy, or not attentive enoughto recognize when He needs me,He will find someone else.

I always thought I was ablessing to God by doing thesethings and helping people. Inreality I was receiving the blessing.

Several years ago I was in anairport and received a phone callfrom a stranger asking me to call ayoung man that had been in anaccident. This young, healthy,

eighteen-year-old stopped at anaccident to help. While doing so,a car slid into him and knockedhim over a 20' bridge.

At first they thought hewouldn’t live. After surviving,they told him he probablywouldn’t walk again because oneof his legs was nearly ruined. Hedefinitely would not be able torope again. This was his rewardfor being a good Samaritan andhe was going through adepression. They told me he wasa big fan of mine and asked if Icould I take a minute or two to

By this we know that weare in Him.” Many people think that justbecause there is a God, and that God is somerciful, that we can live however we chooseand still go to Heaven. The truth is that thedemons even believe there is a God andthey’re not going to heaven.

Many want just to have an intellectualpursuit of God on their terms - that is not“knowing God.” He who says, “I know Him”and does not keep his commandments is a liar.The question I have for you today is do youknow what God’s commandments are first ofall? Secondly, do you follow Hiscommandments? Our own children teach theharsh reality of human nature to us. Have youever wondered why your children don’t obeyyou? The truth is that they love themselvesmore than they love you. Strong words, huh?

The same principle applies in ourrelationship with God. The reason fordisobedience is that we love ourselves morethan we love our God. Just accumulating factsabout something in and of itself does notchange you or spur you on. It must go beyondknowledge and also beyond words. As the old

saying goes, “Talk is cheap.” Practice not only applies to sporting events

and rodeos, it also applies to following Christ.It’s been said that practice makes perfect.Hopefully, we all know by now that thosewords are not true. We can practice wrong forthe rest of our life and never grow or mature.Perfect practice makes perfect. The love weexperience towards Jesus is a love that wecontinuously grow and develop only as wecontinue to be obedient to Him.

The only way you will know God is byspending time in His word. As well as throughprayer and spending quality time withindividuals that have the same core values ofbeing obedient to God. The way we knowGod is by keeping His word and letting thelove of God be perfected perpetually by Him.

him and we talked for ten orfifteen minutes. I prayed for himand told him as soon as he wasable to rope he could attend one ofmy schools on me. He’d been toldhe may not walk again and I’mtelling him to come to my school.

I was told that conversationturned everything around for him.He’s now going to college. I’ve had

him at a school and got to visit with him in Vegas. He’s agreat example to people of notlosing hope.

I’m certain I got more out of itthan he did. I was presented withan opportunity to reach out tosomeone in need. If I had been toobusy, it would have been easy tosend him a text telling him I waspraying for him. However, I doubtit would have had the same affect.

TRUST ME. I have missed moreopportunities than I have takenadvantage of, but this time bybeing a blessing, I received thegreatest blessing myself.

If we’re willing, God will useyou. If not, he’ll find someone elsewho is. I, myself, don’t want tomiss a chance to be a blessing andreceive His blessings.

This month’s installment comes to you after a bad week for

America. The bombing in Boston andthe devastating explosion in Texasrocked the country.

A day or so after the Boston ordeal,I looked at my Facebook page andfound an article a friend of minewrote. I read through it and realizedhe hit it dead on. At the beginning ofthe article, he explained that he wasnot sure why people do these kind ofacts and why people seem to have somuch hatred toward the UnitedStates. In the end though, I believe hecaptured it and answered his ownquestion. Below is his paragraph thatin my opinion nailed it!

“You see, those cowardly bastardsalso known as ‘terrorists’ placed thosebombs at the finish line fully believingthat after 26.2 miles and literally

hours of physical, mental andemotional torture, they would findtheir victims more than willing to liedown and succumb to the terror theyhoped to inflict. They believed thatwe were finished… They were wrong!Within seconds after those bombsexploded men and women of all ages,creeds and colors, all the while beingphysically drained from the gruelingjourney and wearing their runningshoes and skimpy shorts, ran notaway from, but rather straighttowards the scene of the blasts.Others, wearing yellow volunteerjackets who arrived that morningexpecting to hand out water andpower bars to participants, ran notaway, but rather straight towards totalstrangers, becoming another type ofparticipant willing to do whatever wasnecessary to help their fellow man.
