“I have been dealing with and feeding roping calvesfor 40 years and I have never seen a feed work aseffectively and quickly as Precision Calf Feeds. Noother feed compares. It keeps calves healthy.”I train horses for a living, specializing in calf ropinghorses. . . so I keep lots of calves to work these horseson. I give roping lessons as well, so I need to keep mycalves well in order to do my work. Precision Feeddoes it for me.

Sparky has an inexpensive way to train your horses and practice tie down roping. The new Sparky calf sled can be pulled behind a 4 wheeler or any type of pulling unit. You get the same practice as with live calves but not the livestock up-keep and cost. The Sparky calf tie down will give yourhorse a jerk when it is roped and releases from the sled. You can run your rope, pick upthe calf and tie it. The legs are spring loaded for gathering them. The front left leg has aloose hock joint to press straight for tying. The calf body is 75 Ibs. and it comes with abladder for more body weight. Body and legs are made from a plastic rubber materialthat is flexible and very durable.

Any more all-around world championships and Trevor Brazile will beforced to start counting with his toes. The Decatur, Texas, cowboy clinched his record 10th all-around gold

buckle during the fifth round of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo onMonday night thanks to a third-place go-round finish in team roping. It’s Brazile’s 17th career gold buckle, the second-most all-time to Guy

Allen, who won 18 steer roping world championships.“It’s just such a relief,” Brazile said. “As much as I try not to let it affect

anything, it kind of just releases me to go try to do whatever it takes to winthe team roping, and just concentrate on that title. That is the immediatething that I think about. And as far as the long-term stuff, 10 world titles ismore than I ever could have dreamed of. It’s awesome.”PH

The USCRA headed into two different events overthe past month and ropers flocked to both events totake advantage of the new formats and largerpayouts. The USCRA was in Giddings on November24 to let ropers celebrate Thanksgiving calf ropingstyle. They enjoyed a day of roping that included aOne-Header, a Three-Header and a few matchropings. The USCRA then headed to Stephenville,Texas for an event on December 8-9, 2012. Thisevent included two full days of action. The USCRAwill be heading to several more stops in the comingmonths and ropers who have not had a chance to seefirst hand the fresh ideas that are attracting more calfropers to events, you better load up and hit the road!

14 • JANUARY 2013 CALF ROPINGS & ROPING SCHOOLS

Well, the town ofGiddings, Texas, home of the USCRA,

came close to having a WorldChampion in the sport of calfroping. If you follow pro rodeo, then you saw Gidding’s own,Justin Maass, take it right down tothe last calf at the NFR. It was anexciting time for the small town of Giddings. Hats off to JustinMaass and Tuf Cooper for givingthe calf roping world somethingpositive to talk about for twoweeks. Oh, and by the way, bothof these ropers were USCRAChampions before they were topprofessional ropers.

Hey, take a look at the SpringClassic USCRA Roping March 2ndand 3rd. There is going to be$4,000 added to the winners of

the four divisions. However, thewinner’s bonus will depend on thenumber of ropers in each roping. In other words, the roping withthe most ropers will have thelargest bonus. This is your chanceto call your friends and spread theword so we can make this a bigroping. If you win this roping itwill be to your benefit to be in thelargest division of the weekend.

If you read mine and Stran’sarticles last month, then youprobably noticed that both of usput emphasis on the scoring. Justwant you to know that it was notplanned that way. You might saywe were both on the same page.Let’s hope that you get on thesame page.

e’re in Vegas for theNational Finals and it’s avery different year for me.

Because of this article, NationalRoper’s Supply asked me to give adaily motivational talk eachmorning at their trade show at theMGM. I agreed and then realizedwhat a huge undertaking I hadsigned up for. Now, I’m used tospeaking and can do a reasonablejob when talking to my studentsor when making brief commentsto a crowd.

What I’m not used to doing isspeaking for fifteen to thirtyminutes while delivering amessage that I’m passionateabout. I spent some time re-reading articles and doing researchuntil I came up with a theme withdaily topics that relate to it. Thistheme is, “Whatever you doregularly will determine whatyou’ll have eventually.”

My first topic was “Power ofthe Tongue,” meaning whateveryou speak or talk about, whetherit’s positive or negative, will havean effect on your daily life. If youregularly speak positively you willfind yourself creating better habitsand being generally happier.

Some of my other topicsinclude relationships, surrounding yourself with theright people, having balance inyour life, and broadening yourmind. NRS has been filming thisand will eventually make itavailable on You Tube foreveryone to watch.

It’s ironic because I wasdreading this because it wasoutside of my comfort zone. Butonce I started preparing andmaking notes I really startedhaving a good time. It’s easy toturn down an opportunity or backaway from something thatintimidates us, but after this I

Wwith

would encourage you to bite thebullet and relish the experienceand what you can learn from it.Trying something new will onlyadd to your personal resume oflife experiences.

To do something new anddifferent, you have to decide todecide. It’s easy for me because I

can remember a specific timewhen I decided to get healthy. Idecided to eat right, sleep more, and work out. I focused on beinghealthy in every area of myphysical well-being. I started toaccumulate and soak upinformation from trainers, doctors, or articles I read. Then I

applied that information andmade it my own.

I want to thank NRS for givingme the opportunity to not onlymotivate people, but also toexpand my horizons and have achance to learn something new.

Until next time, God Bless, andI’ll see you down the line.

ew Year’s resolutions year in andyear out are made, kept andprocrastinated on. I would like to

challenge you this year to make a resolution, should you choose to accept it, that willchange your life forever. Many are notcourageous enough to accept this challenge. If you are one of the few who are committedto becoming like Christ, this will be yourgreatest accomplishment. Your challenge isto live a life of unconditional love.

We had two dogs at the house. One dogwas the most loving dog you’d ever find, and the other dog would love you as longas you were doing what he wanted you todo. The difference between Peanut and Jackwas that Peanut’s love was unconditionaland Jack’s love was conditional.

Jack would say, “I’ll love you if you’llgive me a ride on the 4-wheeler.” AndPeanut would say, “I’ll love you no matterwhat.” I don’t have to tell you which dogdid the most whining, or which dog gotthe most love.

Loving God and loving people is anindividual choice. It is not something Godimposes on us, or something we impose onothers. The conditions we impose onothers will be the same conditions wereceive from them. It is called the law of

sowing and reaping. You really do reapwhat you sow.

Something we all have in us is a thingcalled the sin nature. What that means isthat in the flesh we always want our way.If we have Jack’s attitude in life, because ofpride, in our minds we always think weare right, even if we’re wrong.

God’s love is unconditional. Everyonewants to be loved, no matter how tough orcalloused they pretend to be. If you chooseto continue to be hard and calloused –your harvest in life will be the germ ofyour own decay.

How To Train for Calf RopingIt’s the New Year! Calf roping is a fast paced

rodeo event. It requires strength, excellent timingand skill. Make sure you practice your calf ropingskills on a training system before attempting itwith a horse and calf. This is safer and creates lessfrustration for beginners when they are learning. Itis also a great tool for seasoned ropers.

It is beneficial to find an experienced calfroper and trainer like Shane Steeves(www.4realhorsetraining.com) or PRCA calfroper, Josh Peek, to teach the necessary skills. They can observe your runs, critique you andyour horse, and point out areas that needimprovement. A pro clinic is also a way to gainthis knowledge. Many pros use the Tuf Kaf calfroping training system.

The Tuf Kaf, calf roping dummy and trainingsystem, simulates a real calf, but allows you tolearn in a controlled and safe manner all theproper steps needed to create muscle memory.

Tuf Kaf over emphasizes everything in calfroping. It’s purposely made to create musclememory. The flank handle is made deeper to overemphasize, the longer legs make you keep yourelbow out, and one must roll their wrist and placethe rear legs to wrap. It also teaches you to keepthe legs low when gathering to avoid a calfkicking during a live run.

There are many other features that the Tuf Kafhas to teach proper technique. You can practiceroping this dummy from a horse or on the ground.

Now you are ready to “Practice to Win.”Casey Sellers

Welcome 2013! It is time tothrow out the old calendars

and pin a new one up on ourwalls. This is a time of year weall look ahead to what’s to come, but really, by doing this, we alllook back over the past year. Wedo this because we can base ourplans on the upcoming year bylooking at what happened in thepast. It really is the only thing onwhich we can base what wewant to change. Some may findthey had a great year in 2012and may not have many thingsthey want changed for the NewYear. However, there is probablynot too many individuals whofall into this category. Most ofus, me included, look to the pastyear to see what we need to paymore attention to for theupcoming year. In most caseslooking back over the past yearallows us a chance to at least seewhat needs to be tweaked, whatneeds to be paid attention too alittle more or what needs to becompletely thrown out andstarted over again. For the mostpart, we all have these types ofthings in our lives whether theyare at work, with family orwithin our hobbies.

One thing the New Yearoffers is a chance to start over, wipe the slate clean for the mostpart and charge into the NewYear. I applaud people whorecognize this and continue to goforward. I am sure we have allread some sort of article abouthow someone who finallyreached success explains howmany times he or she failed ontheir way to accomplishing theirgoal. Michael Jordan, ThomasEdison, Walt Disney and manyothers throughout history were

no doubt fighters and continuedto strive forward. Their lives areinspirations. The New Yearoffers that to all of us. It mightbe a time to completely startover, a time to change or a timejust to twist things up a little tohelp reach our goals.

I still believe most people arefighters. Most never give up andthey face their endeavors headon. In many ways continuing tochange, adapt and move aheadis the ultimate goal in life and

LOOPS MAGAZINE • 21

we may not even notice it. Somepeople will never be content andwill never believe they can reachtheir goals, but really they do,they just continue to set newones to fill that desire to neverquit fighting.

The New Year is here and forthose who are ready to fight on,I stand with you.

Until next month, I wish you all the best of luck in life.
