SLETTER STUDENT REPORTS
Following a number of discussions by staff and at School Council level, we have decided to modify the end of year student reports. When you access your childs report on Sentral, you will see that the majority of the information with regards to your childs progress at school is in the portfolio section. We believe that this is the most appropriate way to show you how your child has progressed as an individual. You will see comments from their teachers and from themselves in this section. Teachers will also provide comments on your childs learning habits and behaviours. If you have had difficulty using the internet to view your childs reports, we will be offering the schools computers to parents. Please be on the lookout for this in the school calendar. YEAR 2 SLEEPOVER Year 2 students will be having a sleepover at school TONIGHT Thursday 17th November. Students will finish school at 3.15pm as usual, but will return at 6pm for the fun to begin! Students will need to bring with them a sleeping bag, pyjamas, toothbrush and casual clothes to wear on Friday. A BBQ tea will be provided to all students on Thursday night. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to all Yr 2 students tomorrow. REMEMBRANCE DAY Thank you to our students, Charlotte Brown, Mitch Chesterfield & Kiandra Polglaze who represented Nilma PS at the Remembrance Day Service last Friday. CHAPLAINS’ CHAT
Hi All. At the beginning of the year I challenged parents to make sure they are not playing ‘emotional lotto’ with your children. I chuckled the other day when a teenager said of his family that ‘ Burping, Bellowing and Belligerence’ was the mantra that best describes his family, saying he knew nothing different. I didn’t chuckle for long because guess what he was going to see the counsellor about? Yep! Bullying, bellowing and beating kids up. Anger Management courses can’t undo a foundation of that magnitude easily but the story does remind us that what we model at home is so important because this becomes the ‘kids’ foundation for life. On reflection I wondered if a far better mantra or ‘catch call might be; ‘Be safe, be fair, think, learn and care’ (5 fingers– 5 words) as a reasonable basis for all teaching from the home. Its not hard to learn for all members of the family and when you need to discipline – raise your eyebrows to get attention and simply point quietly to the ‘finger’ they should focus on and keep holding it there until the first step of discipline (reminding them to change focus and self regulate) has registered. I trust that this year as you have played indoor board games together you have modelled’ how to be a good loser as well as a good winner (not too much swaggering), how to give voice to your ‘feelings’ without accusing the other and how to manage differences fairly and with safety. Enjoy the journey with your child/ren and remember we can’t go back and have another go, so it’s worth giving the process some deep thought. Anne Prime
