Oneida County Master Gardener Volunteers
present the 21st Annual
Watercolor artwork created by Judith DeZalia, Master Gardener Volunteer
9:30 am The Green Menace-Since the discovery of the Emerald Ash Borer in the United States, countless ash trees have already died. What is happening in New York State? DEC Foresters will update the status since the discovery of the EAB in the Rome area. Learn what this means for the residents of Oneida County and what is being done to save our trees. Glen Roberts and Dan Welc, Foresters, Private Lands Services and Urban Forestry, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Room B/C
9:30 am Looking at Aquaponics-The Oneida-Herkimer BOCES Conservation Program recently developed and implemented an Aquaponics Program, an integrated system of aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (growing plants in water without soil). In this system, the fish waste provides organic food for the growing plants, and the plants filter the water in which the fish live and grow. Phillip Lacelle, BOCES Conservation Teacher. Room D
10:30 am Pollinator Pathway Project-Do you like to garden and enjoy the outdoors? Do you like pollinators? The St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (SLELO PRISM) is promoting a Pollinator Pathway Project to increase pollinator habitat and reduce the susceptibility of the urban landscape to invasive species. SLELO is also promoting an Invasive Species Volunteer Surveillance Network to strengthen early detection for the presence of invasive species. Learn about invasive species and how you can become part of these Citizen Science initiatives. Megan Pistolese, Education / Outreach Coordinator, SLELO PRISM, the Nature Conservancy, New York Central & Western Chapter. Room B/C
10:30 am Garden Harmony-Flowers, herbs and vegetables can all share space in your garden. This blending of plants has recently been adopted by the All America Selections, (AAS) to attract pollinators and beneficial insects while repelling garden pests and beautifying the landscape. Presenters will show how to combine colors and plant heights as well as matching growing and nutrient requirements. Roseanne Carmody, Master Gardener Volunteer and Ruth Meier, Master Gardener Volunteer, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County. Room D
11:30 am Milkweeds and Monarchs-The remarkable migration of monarch butterflies depends on milkweeds and nectar plants on their breeding grounds and undisturbed forest on their overwintering grounds. This presentation will describe the threats to this biological phenomenon, as well as the current status of monarchs and their migration. Professor Ernest H. Williams, William R. Kenon Professor of Biology Emeritus, Hamilton College, Clinton, NY. Room B/C
11:30 am Growing Protective Foods-Studies have shown that foods containing Vitamin C, Calcium and Iron may help to protect the human body against lead poisoning. Presenter will review these findings and discuss the growing of plants such as Spinach, Bell Peppers, Collard Greens, Bok Choy, Prizm Kale and Tomatoes to be incorporated into a protective diet. John Adams, Environmental Safety Educator, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County. Room D
1:00 pm Cooking with Garden Vegetables and Herbs-Explore the vegetable and herb gardens and learn about fun, easy and tasty ways to enjoy the fruits of your labor! Presenters will share inspiring recipes with a variety of cooking techniques, which will impress even the pickiest of picky eaters. Sample a handpicked recipe from our Nutrition Educators. Mallory Green, Nutrition Educator and Marcus Luppino, Nutrition Educator, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County, North Country Eat Smart New York. Room B/C
1:00 pm A Rose is a Rose-This presentation will focus on selecting and growing sustainable roses, including how to buy different classes of roses and their particular uses; differences between root and grafted roses; and ideas on roses grown in Europe, rose breeders, and the rose industry. Advice about spraying, feeding and pruning roses, as well as growing roses as companion plants in the garden will also be provided. Ron Broughton, Master Gardener Volunteer , Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County. Room D
The Master Gardener Volunteer booth will answer your Garden questions. Parker F. Scripture Botanical Garden is open every day, dawn to dusk and free to the public. Come take a walk!
