There are situations where you may be able to join above the upper age limit. Contact your local unit for more information.

You should be a citizen of the United Kingdom, Commonwealth or Republic of Ireland and should normally have lived in the UK for at least five years, immediately prior to your application.

If you decide to join the Reserve Forces, you indicate that you are prepared to take part in active service. If you are subsequently mobilised, your regular employment will be legally protected. INTRODuCTIONThe Reserve Forces are an essential part of the British Armed Forces, providing some 30,000 volunteers to the Reserves of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Army and RAF. They play a fundamental role in fulfilling major commitments in each of the three Services.

The Reserve Forces provide people with the opportunity to do something different with their lives – to face new challenges,

gain and develop new skills, meet and work with new people, have fun and get paid for it!

Whether you are interested in pursuing a spare time activity with the Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Marines Reserve, the Army Reserve, the RAF Reserves or as an Adult Instructor with the Cadets, London has an organisation to suit you.

ROYAL MARINES RESERVEROYAL NAVAL RESERVE

The Royal Naval Reserve is an integral part of Britain’s naval forces. Volunteers are drawn from all walks of life and train for a variety of roles to enable the Royal Navy to meet its operational commitments. Two of the 13 Reserve Training Centres within the UK are situated in London. Volunteers serve in a variety of roles, including Seaman, Logistics, Maritime Trade Operations, Diving, Information Systems, Information Operations, Nursing and Media Operations. There is also the opportunity to serve with the Joint Cyber Unit (Reserve).

The primary function of the Royal Marines Reserve is to reinforce the Regular Corps with individuals and sub-units both on operations or exercises in the UK and overseas, wherever and whenever the need arises. Successful completion of the arduous Commando Course and the subsequent award of the Green Beret provides opportunities for specialising as Recce Leaders, Heavy Machine Gun Operators, Anti-Tank System Operators, Physical Training Instructors, Platoon Weapons Instructors, Landing Craft Operators, Signallers, Drivers and Swimmer/Canoeist (SBS) (R).

HQ SuPPORTThe Squadron provides trained personnel to the RAF and Joint organisations for: Personnel Support; Information Communications and Technology; Flight Operations; Intelligence.

MEDICAL SuPPORT TO PERSONNEL ON OPERATIONS Healthcare professionals provide care to sick and injured troops on operations. Members of 600 Squadron Medical Flight are trained to operate either within a Medical Treatment Facility – providing both surgical and non-surgical care – or as a member of the Aeromedical Evacuation Team, returning seriously injured soldiers back to the UK.

The Army Reserve needs fit men and women aged between 18 and 43 (the upper age limit can vary for people with healthcare qualifications) who are able to spare an evening a week, a weekend a month and two weeks a year. Training evenings are shown against unit details.All recruits learn basic military skills including weapon handling, field craft, map reading and first aid before moving on to more specialised tasks. Vacancies for men and women vary from unit to unit. Each unit has been listed according to their specific role. Almost all units will also recruit chefs, medics, clerks, drivers, vehicle mechanics and stores accountants. ROYAL ARMOuRED CORPSHONOuRAbLE ARTILLERY COMPANY

The Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) is the oldest regiment in the British Army having been formed by Royal Charter in 1537 by King Henry VIII. Today the HAC is a Surveillance and Target Acquisition (STA) regiment comprising of one STA Patrols squadron, 2 STA squadrons and a Headquarters squadron. The HAC, uniquely, also has a Corps of Drums and a state accredited regimental band. The HAC traditionally recruits from within the City of London and attracts fit, well-motivated and intelligent individuals who seek the challenge of the demanding role that the HAC offers.

The HAC has an important and high profile ceremonial role; it fires Gun Salutes at the Tower of London and provides Guards of Honour at Guildhall on royal and state occasions.

THE ROYAL YEOMANRY The Royal Yeomanry provides Reserves to the Army’s Light Reconnaissance Regiments. Armoured Corps skills are obtained by training in Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance. The Regiment trains and deploys with the regular Army on the RWMIK Reconnaissance Vehicle fitted with the 50 Calibre Heavy Machine gun and 7.62mm GPMG.

INFANTRY

The task of the Infantry is to secure ground and then defend it against enemy forces. Much of the training is on foot, so Infantrymen need to be fit. Recruits might initially train as Riflemen and may then become Assault Pioneers, Medics, Snipers, members of the Recce Platoon, Machine Gunners, Signallers, Drivers or Cooks. Training takes place in the UK and overseas.

Parachute soldiers need to be physically and mentally robust. They undertake all the roles of the Infantry, arriving on the battlefield by parachute, helicopter or on foot. Service with the Special Forces Reserves provides a unique and demanding challenge that is open to serving Army Reserve personnel, ex-Regular personnel and civilians without previous military experience. However, those wishing to serve as Special Forces Reserve soldiers must pass the UK Special Forces Reserve Selection Course. Alternatively, there is a requirement for support staff such as Vehicle Mechanics, Drivers, Paramedics, Clerks, Armourers, Chefs and Operations staff. Applicants for support posts are not required to pass the Selection Course, but they must be suitably qualified.

ARMY MEDICAL SERVICES

The Army Medical Services are responsible for the treatment of the sick and wounded. Qualified healthcare professionals such as Doctors, Nurses and Physiotherapists are always sought (and can be up to 50 years old and possibly older). Recruits with no previous medical experience may train as Combat Medical Technicians.

The Media Operations Group provides commanders with professional advice and guidance in dealing with journalists and helping to ensure that the right messages are communicated in the right way at the right time to the right audiences.

As a specialist unit, there is no weekly commitment. Training consists of 7 weekends a year and a 2 week annual camp.

CVHQ is a National Army Reserve unit that provides individual officers and soldiers to support other parts of the Armed Forces on operations and in training.

ALL ARMS STAFF POOLExperienced officers from all Regiments and Corps of the Army provide staff support to Army headquarters; Naval Gunfire Officers to support RN and NATO ships; and Ground Liaison Officers to support the RAF.

ROYAL ARTILLERY SPECIALIST bATTERYRoyal Artillery officers and soldiers provide gunnery instructors to help train Regular and Army Reserve personnel in gunnery, air defence and surveillance and target acquisition skills. The Battery also provides technical experts to help run artillery headquarters and support other Royal Artillery units on operations and in training.

The two units below offer alternative opportunities for qualified Army Reserve Officers and Soldiers.

The London Army Training Unit offers training qualification and training support to Regular and Army Reserve units in London. London ATU trains and qualifies instructors to carry out specialist training in their own units and assists with pre-deployment training.

Liaison Officers from the District Reinforcement Team provide resilience planning, advice and support to the civil authorities. The team also provides a team of Watchkeepers, who man the London District Operations Room in times of crisis, or when it is stood up and includes military admin staff. Members of the team train for a minimum of 19 days a year, made up of evenings and weekends.

The FANY (Princess Royal’s Volunteer Corps) is a thriving organisation which provides support to civil and military authorities within the UK during any major event or incident and in planning and exercise roles, to protect life and relieve human suffering.

The Corps was formed in 1907 and is the oldest, and most highly decorated, uniformed women’s organisation in the UK. The Corps works closely with the Army, the City of London Police, the Metropolitan Police, the City of London Corporation and other public organisations. Unlike the Reserve Forces, the FANY is a registered charity. All members are volunteers and are not paid for the support they give. In return, once trained, FANYs have the opportunity to take part in ceremonial, adventure training, sporting and social events.

OFFICER TRAININg

There are four ways to become a Reservist Officer in the Armed Services:

1. DIRECT ENTRYThe Direct Entry Army Reserve Potential Officer scheme is designed to train civilians who have no prior service, and in 12 months get them to a standard where they are ready to attend the Army Reserve Commissioning Course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Similar arrangements operate for the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. Your local unit will give you more details or visit the national websites listed on pages 4 & 5.

2. PROMOTION FROM THE RANKS Each service offers the potential for the right person to progress through the ranks and be considered for a commission.

3. PROFESSIONALY QuALIFIED OFFICERS (PQO) Army Reserve Officer applications from qualified Doctors, Dentists and Vets are also very welcome. In this instance the upper age limit for applying is 56.

4. uNIVERSITY OFFICER TRAININg CORPSEach service is represented by its own university organisation with no call-up liability. Recruitment takes place in early October – visit the stands at Freshers Fayres. Membership is open to undergraduates who meet certain admission

criteria and will usually last at least two academic years or however long your degree course takes to complete. SEA CADET CORPS Whether at sea or on land, Sea Cadets offers an environment where young people can find new confidence and inspiration. Across the UK, 14,000 cadets from 400 units are challenging themselves and developing new skills through activities based on the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy, plus tons of nautical adventure for the best possible head start in life.

CADET FORCE ADuLT VOLuNTEERSThere is always a need for enthusiastic and committed people to help the Cadet organisations inspire young people to achieve their goals. No military experience is necessary.Adult Volunteers come from a wide variety of backgrounds and jobs. Some are former Cadets, some are parents of Cadets, others are people who simply have a desire to assist young people, helping them towards responsible adulthood and encouraging them to achieve their full potential. In return, uniform and full training is given. Travel expenses are paid and Volunteers can be paid for a full day’s training. The Cadet organisations also offer adults the chance to acquire a whole new range of skills and qualifications. Most Cadet detachments will train for one or two evenings a week and the occasional weekend. The highlight of each year is Annual Camp which lasts two weeks and can be anywhere in the country and sometimes abroad. AIR TRAININg CORPSThe Air Training Corps (ATC) is a uniformed youth organisation with the aims of promoting and encouraging a practical interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force, fostering the spirit of adventure, developing leadership skills, and providing training that will be useful in adult life.The ATC is sponsored and supported by the Royal Air Force and Air Cadets have a wide range of opportunities available including flying, gliding, work experience and visits to Royal Air Force Stations at home and abroad. In addition Air Cadets also take part in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, training in fieldcraft, first aid and providing services to the community.
