DELIVERING IN GOVERNMENT After briefly leading in the polls during theelection campaign the result last May couldhave been disappointing - but we ended upwith a coalition government implementinglots of Liberal Democrat policies.
It's not that simple though. If you believewhat you read in some papers it's all doomand gloom for the Lib Dems. So here arethree key things our ministers are deliveringfor people in all our communities:
A.G.M.
Cutting Taxes1 Not tax cuts formillionaires like theTories wanted either. We are cutting income tax forthe low paid by raising the tax-free allowance every year. By
2015 this will mean a 700annual tax cut - we have already
delivered an extra 300 a year
for the poorest.Under Labour the tax rate for the
lowest paid doubled whenGordon Brown scrapped the10p tax band.
Young & Old2 We campaigned foryears to restore the linkbetween pensions and earnings. It was scrapped by Mrs
Thatcher, Blair and Browntalked about fixing it. We did it!
We also campaigned in2010 for a pupil premium to
target extra money on pupils
from poor families who need itmost. Now it's happening! It is
scandalous that after 13 years ofLabour the rich still get so much
better education than the poor.
The Bankers3 Labour's soft-touchregulation of the banksleft the country in a hugeeconomic mess - and few of usreally believe the Tories would
have got tough with their friendsin the City.
The coalition has
introduced a new Banking Levy
- a tax on bank profits that willcollect over 8 billion to tacklethe deficit. Plus, Capital Gains
Tax (paid on bankers' bonuses)
has gone up an extra 10%.
It will soon be time for your LibDem local party's AnnualGeneral Meeting.
The AGM is your chance as amember to elect the peoplewho will lead the local party's
campaigns and activities for thecrucial next twelve months.
It is also a great opportunity tomeet and talk to other local LibDems, review the past year andplan for the future.

London's Lib Dem Euro-MP, Sarah Ludfordrecently met a group of students from Oasis
Academy in Croydon at the EuropeanParliament to discuss how to stop humantrafficking for slave labour on cocoa farms in the
Ivory Coast, and what the chocolate industrycan do about it.
Tasting of Fair Trade chocolate was included!
Sarah and other Lib Dem MEPs have beencampaigning on a variety of issues around child
labour, sex trafficking and the ongoing slavetrade. Earlier this year the coalition government
decided to sign the UK up to an EU directiveaimed at stopping human trafficking.
City Hall: The Big Switch to electric on the roads
Sarah Ludford MEP: Stopping human trafficking
The Lib Dem group on theLondon Assembly haslaunched an ambitious planto switch all of London'sbuses and taxis to electric
power by 2020.With electric vehicles emittingno exhaust pollution, turning
Londons buses, taxis andcommercial LGV fleets electricwould reduce the air pollution
Londoners suffer by around25% - and even more in centralLondon, with a 65% cut in
nitrogen dioxide emissions on
Oxford Street.
Wider benefits include areduction in CO2 emissions ofover 300,000 tonnes, quieter
streets and cheaper runningcosts, helping make public
transport more affordable.
"We have been campaigningfor better air quality in Londonwith measures like a central
Clean Air Zone would help a
lot," says Assembly Member
Mike Tuffrey, "but look at thefacts and it is a no brainer thatthe top priority is to electrify
buses, taxis and vans."
Because electric vehicles arecheaper to run, the Big Switch
could happen with very littlepublic money and would savemillions in costs to the NHS too.
We're always keen to findnew ways of keeping intouch with London and withour members.

Hammersmith & Fulham ran agreat event for members - a bikeride to explore the wholeborough followed by a picnic and
an afternoon surveying residents.
In Islington, weworked with localdisabled-rightsgroups to tackle
the "obstaclecourse" of signsand adverts onthe borough'spavements.
Lib Dem campaigners in Hackneyheard about a plan to build a newsupermarket in Stoke Newington'salready busy town centre, so theyset up a petition - it's been signedby over 1000 people!
