ABSTRACT

An induced polarisation and resistivity survey was carried out in August 2001 on behalf of Falconbridge Ltd by our Abitibi Geophysics crew on the Island Copper project (297) located in Aweres Twp, Batchawana Area, province of Ontario.

Survey specifiactions, instrumentation control, data acquisition, processing and interpretation were all successfully performed within our quality system framework.

Survey results show several weak, moderate and locally strong anomalous responses in an area of rather high apparent resistivity background. Five main anomalous zones were interpreted from the seven more closely spaced sections.

Complementary IP surveys and drilling targets are suggested.

Planning of subsequent work in this area should be done in the light of all geological, geochemical and geophysical information available.

5. INTERPRETATION

RESISTIVITY A IP RESPONSES

The apparent resistivities measured on the grid are generally high with values often over 5 000 to 10 000 ohm-m. Some topography effects are observed on the resistivity results mostly seen as weakly conductive responses restricted to the surface (creek beds or valleys with thicker overburden for example). This is easily recognised on the image2D true-depth sections as features confined to the first 25 metres near surface. The well-marked resistivity decreases encountered on lines 9200N, 9300N, 9400N and 9800N are likely related with the local power line.

The apparent chargeability readings show a moderate background of 3 to 5 mV/V inside which anomalous values of 5 to 20 mV/V (locally 26 to 40 mV/V) were detected. The survey thus outlined several weak, moderate and strong responses. They are shown along the survey lines on the Geophysical Interpretation Map and on the Pseudosections Plates. Some of these responses coincide with highly resistive features and could be explained, at least partly, by bedrock uplifts. Anomalous responses separated by 200 m or more were not correlated.

Five main anomalous zones, labelled PD-1 to PD-5 were interpreted between lines 8800N and 9400N. Anomalous zone PD-4 presents the best responses with chargeability effects of 10 to 25 mV/V associated with a weak resistivity decrease. Anomalous zone PD-5 also shows strong chargeability effects, however only partially detected, which could be influenced by the nearby power line and cliff. As for anomalous zones PD-1 to PD-3, they are characterized by weak to moderate chargeability effects and could be explained by disseminated mineralisation and/or bedrock uplifts. Most anomalous zones or reponses, particularly anomalous zone PD-4,

Falconbridge Ltd -6- Island Copper Project/ 01-N639

approaches the surface, as seen on the chargeability true depth sections and could then be first verified by prospecting and trenching.

The interpretation of the present IP data is essentially a geophysical appraisal of the Island Copper Project. As such, it incorporates only as much geoscientific information as the author has on hand at the time. Geologists thoroughly familiar with the area are in a better position to evaluate the geological significance of the various geophysical signatures. Moreover, as time passes and information provided by follow-up programs which are compiled, exploration targets recognised in this study might be down- or up-graded.

Respectfully submitted, Abitibi Geophysics Inc.
