Logistics in Latvia

Due to its geographical location on the crossroads between the main Eurasian markets,

Latvia is one of the most convenient and reasonable hub for transporting goods from Asia to

Europe and vice versa. Latvia forms the European Union’s external border with Russia and

Belarus, thus making the country a bridge between East and West, as well as North and

South.

Three ice-free sea ports and efficient railway infrastructure leading to them makes

As a result of very active work during 2016 and 2017, Latvia has established strong

and Indian railway companies and manufacturers. Thus the Latvian logistics sector is able to

offer a range of new container train routes between Asia and Europe. The railway route is

more than three times faster than sea routes connecting the same locations, thus it is the

most advantageous way to transport fast moving consumer goods. For instance, the road

from Eastern part of China and the capital city of Latvia, Riga takes up to 12 days, and the

road from India to Riga – up to 10 days.

Moreover, sea routes connecting Latvian ice-free ports of Riga, Ventspils and Liepaja

cities with Scandinavia and Germany allows reaching Scandinavia and most part of the


Europe in two days. Latvia keeps the leading position among the Baltic States in freight

transportation volumes.
