Welcome back to a new school year I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back returning students and families to the 2017 school year as well as a number of new families to the school. I make particular mention of all our families with student’s who begin their child’s learning journey in prep for the first time. We are very excited that you have entrusted us with your child and their development and wellbeing. The partnership between families and school is extremely important as parents are their child’s first teachers. We look forward to working with you to enable your child to become the best version of themselves that they can be.

We commence the school year with 32 classes (an additional 3 classes) on our numbers at the end of last year. The year 5 and 6 classes were able to move into the new teaching block 6 on the first day. Even though there are a few things to be finished and defects to be rectified, the rooms and the other facilities are first class. We had a visit from the Minister for Education the Hon. Kate Jones and the State Member for Logan, Linus Power on the Thursday prior to school returning, who came to inspect the new facility. They were impressed with the size and space the building will provide and were happy to see such a wonderful facility added to Logan Village. 2017 will be the first year of implementation of the school’s new 4 year Strategic Plan and will see the school working hard to improve student learning in our priority area of reading. Through the next few newsletters, I will profile the school’s priority areas for development over the next 4 years. This newsletter I will outline the school’s purpose and our values.

Purpose

To provide an outstanding, quality education that will meet the needs of all students and maximise their learning outcomes.

To equip students to fully engage in the society of the future as productive members of the community. Quality outcomes with our Community

Every student - Every Lesson – Every Day Values

At Logan Village State School we believe that...

• our best today can be improved upon tomorrow • everyone can learn and our goal is to maximise that learning • we can make a positive difference in the lives of our students, their families and our community • positive relationships are the foundation of effective teaching • student learning is maximised when parents and teachers and the community work together.

Through the implementation of the You Can Do It Program we teach and model the personal attributes of confidence, persistence, resilience, organisation, and getting along. These qualities underpin our relationships within the school.

A note from Logan City Council

Parallel Parking on Storey Road Late last year there were some changes to parking on Storey Road making it a parallel parking area. Previously, parents were reverse angle parking and this was creating safety issues for students and parents as well as the owners of properties on Storey Road. Council has erected signage to ensure parents continue to parallel park. Drivers should be familiar with the Queensland Road Rules, and when parking outside the school, should be aware of any parking signage that may apply. If parking a vehicle on Storey Road, in the parallel parking sections, vehicles should be parallel parked on the shoulder of the road, and should not be parked on or block any of the road carriageway which vehicles travel along. When a vehicle is parallel parked, it should be facing in the same direction as the vehicle would normally be when travelling along a road. Please be mindful of children and other road users when entering or exiting these areas.

Please be aware of these changes as Council intend to send parking officials to the school in the near future to monitor the situation.

SMS notification

I remind all parents to please ensure they update their contact details if they change numbers. It is imperative that we have your most up to date mobile phone number and contact details, if we are to ensure the safety of your child.

I also ask that parents/carers begin to assist us to reduce the number of notifications we send out by contacting the office the morning their child is absent. This can be done by leaving a message on the absence line 55472222 or emailing [email protected] your child’s name /class and /absence details.

Students Late to school

It is very important that students arrive to school before 8:50 am each morning. Late students disrupt the learning and teaching in the classroom. Students arriving late need to provide a note from their parent/carer explaining their late arrival. Please ensure that notes are provided to your child. All late students are required to report to the office to obtain a late slip.

Mobile phones and electronic devices

Please remind students that if these items have to come to school, they need to be handed in at the office. Any student found to be keeping these on their person while at school will have these items confiscated and will only be returned to a parent.

ALLERGIES

A number of students have serious allergies which are life-threatening, such as an allergy to nuts. The allergy is so severe that even to be touched by the hand that touched a nut can cause an allergic reaction Anaphylaxis. Due to the high sensitivity and the severe reaction that can lead to death , it is preferred that no student bring any nut products to school. Your understanding and cooperation in this matter will be greatly appreciated – it may save a life!

Student Learning Enhancement Resource Scheme (SLERS )

Teachers are accessing a range of different types of resources to support the new curriculum. Instead of utilising a range of different text books, where only a minimum amount would be used, more specific educational resources are used to individualise your child’s educational program. These resources stimulate and differentiate learning for all students. To maximize access to high quality educational resources, we are requesting a $60.00 (Year 1 -6) and ($75 for Prep) payment for every student. This payment should be made to the office once your invoice is received – thank you for your support with this payment, it will make a BIG difference to the delivery of lessons at Logan Village State School this year!

Payment Methods Money days are Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.

• In person at Logan Village State School • Cheque payable to Logan Village State School • Direct Deposit to school account ………BSB 064-401

o Account 00090017

Please insert your child’s name and amount NOT THE PARENT NAME OR INVOICE NUMBER

Uniforms: “NO HAT – NO PLAY” It is wonderful to see so many of our students all in correct uniform. We do have some students wearing caps to school. These are not to be worn. A wide brimmed hat is the appropriate hat for school. Our school hats are available for purchase at the uniform shop. They do offer greater sun protection than caps. It is also an important part of the school uniform.

Parents parking in the school grounds

A reminder that school carparks are for staff only. There should be no additional cars or students entering the area at all. Parents will be asked to remove their vehicles if they use this area without permission.

Keeping clear of classrooms in the afternoon

I would like to request that parents waiting in the school grounds to collect their children please remain in the main under covered areas away from the view of the children. Many of our younger students are easily distracted by adults and in some cases children can become distressed if they cannot see their parents when other parents are in view. Parents please wait until the bell rings to move to your child’s classroom. Please keep port rack areas clear.

No Playing on the Playgrounds Please reinforce to your child/ren that all playgrounds are out of bounds before and after school

hours . Teachers will be talking to their classes about the importance of this also to prevent any accidents, injuries etc.

Dogs on School Grounds

Please be advised that dogs are not allowed in the school grounds at any time.

Class requisites I would like to encourage parents to ensure that their children have all equipment and books required for school, (as per booklist). It is very difficult for students to engage in the learning process if they do not have all the tools they require to complete the tasks at hand. Teachers require these items to be present at school as soon as possible.

Smoking in the School Grounds It is illegal to smoke in the school grounds or within 10 metres of the school grounds. Also please have respect for our students, families and our community by refraining from smoking just outside the gate. We need to be careful of our actions as these are setting examples for our young people, good or bad!!

Medication Who can administer the medication?

School staff can assist a student with medication under the carer provisions of the Health (Drugs and Poisons) Regulation (1996) provided that a written request is received from the student’s parent/caregiver and that the medication includes an original pharmacy label deta iling the name of the person authorised to take the medication, dosage, time to be taken and medical practitioners name.

Staff must follow the directions on the original label attached to the medication container. Some students may be approved to self – administer their medication.

Tuckshop Update

We have been working towards having our tuckshop full of green foods (healthy options) in line with the smart choices program. To achieve this we have had to take the following few items off the menu: - Dino Snacks - Crazy Lemon - Juice Bombs We would love to hear your suggestions on other healthy choice options you would like to see on the menu. Please fill out the below form and return to the office by the 17th February and the best suggestion will win an ice block Name: ______________________ Class: _______________ Healthy Choice Suggestion:

Flexischools Just a reminder that if your child/children have a flexi school account,

please make sure that you have updated your child’s class to 2017.

Are your kids procrastinating?

Research tells us

Recent research has focused on illuminating differences between high and low procrastinators in terms of their emotional states and patterns of thinking. Some kids who procrastinate are likely to have a fear of failure that includes anxiety about meeting the expectations of their parents, teachers, and friends, a lack of self-confidence and assertiveness skills, as well as low self-esteem.

An even larger group of students procrastinate due to the unpleasantness of the task. Rather than worrying about not being successful, these kids are turned off by the boredom and frustration they experience while working on the task. High academic procrastinators can experience more anxiety, and are more likely to attribute their success to external and fleeting circumstances rather than their own ability and effort. They often lack a strong belief in their ability to be successful at the homework they’re putting off, and appear to have less control over their emotional reactions.

Ripping up excuses

If your child keeps putting off doing schoolwork :

• It’s very likely that he or she is pretty talented at making up excuses for why they haven’t done the work.

• They’ve made up the excuse so they don’t have to feel guilty about procrastinating. • An excuse is often a rationalisation to protect them. • The most popular excuse is : ‘I’ll do it tomorrow’ • By making an excuse, kids lull themselves into a false sense of comfort and security by

imagining the task will be done tomorrow.

Techniques to teach kids who are putting off doing their school assignments or homework

• Knock-out technique. The harder and more boring the work, the better it is to do it immediately. Help to identify the homework where this technique can apply.

• Worst-first approach. Identify the most difficult aspect of homework and do that first. Sometimes kids won’t do the easiest part of the homework due to anxiety about having to do the most difficult. Ask your child to describe what he has to do and tell you which activities are the hardest and make a start on these immediately.

• Bits and Pieces approach. Kids can easily feel overwhelmed by homework, especially if they’re a perfectionist. Encourage them to make a start, and work from there, doing more and more until homework doesn’t seem so impossible.

• Salami technique. Just as salami tastes better eaten in small pieces, so two a large project broken down into simpler pieces.

• Remember-forget technique. If your child is forgetting what to do in homework, teach her that whenever she remembers forgetting to do something, to do at least some of it immediately.

• Five-minute plan. Getting started is easier if kids work on something for five minutes. Ask them to agree to work for another five and then another five. After fifteen minutes, they’ll be well into the homework.

• Switching. Switching encourages kids to learn to take the momentum they’ve gained from doing one activity they enjoy to immediately switching over to one they’ve been putting off. Time playing an app, to time doing homework.

• Premack procedure. As distinct from Switching, the Premack Procedure (names after the scientist who discovered it) involves kids selecting an activity they really enjoy and not allowing themselves to participate until after they’ve finished their homework.

• Referenting. Kids who procrastinate tend to think about the upside of not doing work and the downside of doing it. In Referenting, they reverse this pattern by writing down all the good things that will happen from doing work and all the bad thing from not. This list may need reviewing regularly!

• Establishing a set time. Encourage your child to schedule a set time to begin work ahead of time.

• Establishing priorities. Kids need to know which aspects of homework are most important and which are least. Ask your child to write down all the work due for completion in the next week. Then write down all the things he wants to do after school and on the weekend. Place a 1 next to most important, 2 next to fairly, and 3 next to not very.

• Isolation. Remove distractions, particularly any electronic devices. If they need to use the computer, sit with them and oversee.

• Visible Reminders. These can be printed notes on the bedroom door or electronic reminders. I can do it; Do it now; Put off putting off.

And finally, it almost goes without saying that if we as parents put off doing things we find boring or frustrating, our kids will learn from our example. So, be a good example your kids will learn from – put off, putting it off.

School Banking Information Session.

Logan Village State School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all

students.

School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about
