T here is a kindly joke about change in the Church of England: ―How many people does it take to change a light bulb in the Church

of England? Answer: Change the light bulb?!‖ The Church of England doesn‘t always have a good reputation for changing with the times but the pace of life is such that change is very much a part of it‘s contemporary agenda. Not, changing it‘s ancient message, of God‘s love made known to us in Jesus, but changing it‘s structures and shape to address 21st century society.

Revd. Robert Toogood retired as Vicar of Bramley last month, where he had been for 19 years, and we wish Robert well in his retirement. Robert will not be replaced and this pattern will be repeated in future years as the cost of keeping full-time ministers increases. The plan is to appoint a House For Duty priest (HFD) at Bramley, that is, someone who is ordained and who will serve for three days a week with free accommodation provided but who will not receive payment. For this to happen I have agreed to be appointed as Priest-in-Charge of Bramley with overall responsibility for the parish assisted by the HFD priest, when appointed.

However, there is another part to the proposed changes that will affect our parishes. The PCC‘s of Bramley, Stratfield Saye and Hartley Wespall have given unanimous consent to embark upon a Pastoral Scheme, which, if accepted, will become a Pastoral Measure resulting in a new benefice.

The Scheme goes something like this: Stratfield Saye will become an ‗independently run‘ church under the care of Stratfield Saye Estate through the Churches Conservation Trust; Hartley Wespall will become part of the parish of Mattingly, Heckfield and Rotherwick and Sherfield will unite as one parish, with Bramley and Little London to become a united benefice, with me as Rector (with no extra pay, just in case you‘re wondering) within the Deanery of Odiham.

Goodness, what a lot of proposed changes! These are the proposals and whilst a HFD priest could be appointed at any time the Pastoral Scheme will take a lot longer and has to pass through many stages of consultation. Personally, together with my PCC‘s I sense that God‘s hand is in all these developments and I believe that the changes will prove to be good for us all.

Ringing ...for Remembrance Sunday… but for how much longer?

C hurch bells are traditionally rung half muffled as a mark of respect for the dead. A piece of leather is fixed over one side of each bell

clapper so that the bells alternately ring loudly and softly as the clapper swings from side to side. Most church bells are rung this way on Remembrance Sunday and, although there is no Remembrance Day Service at St. Leonard‘s Church, we will be ringing Sherfield bells half muffled and hope that they will be heard at the War Memorial Service.

We need new recruits if ringing is to continue at Sherfield as recent academic successes mean that some of our band are no longer full time residents in the village. We have successfully taught teenagers, adults and retired people to ring. If you are at least 13 and can climb the spiral stairs up the tower, you can learn this ancient and enjoyable art. You do not need to be musical or a regular church goer. We practice on Thursday evenings and ring for Sunday services. If you are interested (and with no obligation!), please contact us to find out more.

S peed enforcement. Myself and a colleague were in Pamber Road, Silchester this month. The results were: FPN (Fixed Penalty Notices)

x 5; DAT (Driver Awareness Training) x 3 and Verbal Warning x 1.

Anti Social Behaviour. Recently we have had more calls re older youths in the play areas. Commitments permitting, the play areas are being patrolled when we are on late shifts.

Please continue to report any incidents to 101.

Litter. An article has been provided by Basingstoke & Deane borough council in relation to littering and fly tipping. The litter warden for Bramley has been to the places about which complaints were received. To date there have been a couple of reports where callers have been advised to contact the council team responsible for this issue.

Please do report any incidents to 101 in order that all relevant agencies are aware of the issue and, if possible, offenders can be identified.

Crime. In relation to crime in the area, ―burglary non dwellings‖ are still the main offence, with five incidents this month alone. Property stolen includes petrol driven tools and copper.

Theft from vehicles this month has been fuel from horseboxes.

PLEASE, do not leave anything of value in your car, whether whilst at the pub or parked up whilst going for a walk.

Sherfield School Visit to St. Leonard‘s Church

Thursday 17th June 2010

A t 1.30pm, 5 year olds from The Sherfield School were bussed over for an arranged

visit to St. Leonards Church. There were 22 children accompanied by two teachers, all the children with their worksheets and pencils to be completed during their visit.

Information on the history of the Church was given to the children by myself. Brian Archer talked to the classes about the organ and explained the workings. Spare organ pipes were shown and several children were allowed to play the organ. The classes really enjoyed it. Sheena Archer was taking photographs of the visit.

The one hour visit passed so quickly and it was soon time to get back on the bus to return to school. All of the children were very well behaved, a

credit to their teachers.

A letter of thanks was later received from the school - all pupils having signed it.

O n Saturday 4th September, a large array of trophies gleamed on stage, tables were a riot of colour and soon

the halls were buzzing with friendly chatter.

It‘s interesting how

the Show has developed in its 44 years. More people are now entering

cookery, art and photo classes: a record 13 entries in ‗The Natural World‘ photo class! We were also very pleased to see more allotment holders taking part and a

Spurrier won two cups! Congratulations to Norman Smith for

winning the prestigious Sherfield Trophy and SDGC Cup. The Show is good fun and attracts all age groups: from the under-5s competing for the Happy Faces Trophy, won by Anouk

their 70s and 80s.

The enormous

marrows attracted a lot of interest and Mr Chris Hayward

retained his trophy for ‗A cake made by a man‘, outstripping much hot competition!

The committee would like to thank all those who helped to make the

Show such a success; with particular thanks to those

families and individuals who entered multiple classes.

A donation from the Show will soon be presented to Headley Court for injured forces personnel.

PENTIRE SPORT HORSES

P entire Sport Horses started ten years ago and relocated to Sherfield on Loddon in May 2007. We took on Lillymill Farm and

have turned it into a successful event and livery yard. We have three Great Danes constantly on patrol - Lion, Baloo and Buster and they are responsible for the security here.

Most of the horses here are event horses or ex race horses being re-trained as event horses. We also have a number of very good Dressage horses and some Show Jumpers. The main riders are Sorrel Porteous, Alex Hua Tian and Ben Andrew. Both Alex and

Sorrel are event riders and Ben is a Grand Prix Dressage rider. Alex is currently competing at International 4* events and can regularly be seen in magazines and on television. His horses have done both Badminton and Burghley this year and are heading for the London 2012 Olympics. He was on the front cover of Horse and Hound in the spring.

Most of the livery clients here are competition riders and base themselves with us for training and competing. We have fantastic on site facilities which include a huge outdoor arena, horse walker, acres of individual turn out paddocks, off road hacking as well as training with some of the best riders and trainers in the world. Some livery clients are just here for fun and love being a part of such a busy, vibrant team.

We all love being here in Sherfield. Everyone is so friendly. We use The Shop and The Salon on a regular basis - Richard tries his best to keep us all glamorous and The Shop keeps us all well fed! The Great Danes are thrilled with bones from Steve the Butcher!

BASINGSTOKE LADIES CHOIR

W hen you read this Basingstoke Ladies Choir will have recently returned from a concert tour in Germany based in the city of Weimar and will be looking

forward to their winter programme.

This starts when they take part in the Mayor‘s Annual Charity Concert at the Anvil on Saturday 2nd October. Tickets for this are available direct from The Anvil Box Office. Then on Saturday 23d October they will hold their Annual Concert at the United Reformed Church in London Street Basingstoke. Their guest on this occasion will be David Allard a wonderful tenor often heard on the BBC.

October Update from Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council

D efences on the Green Over the summer, work has been undertaken to provide the Village Green

with defences against illegal encampment by travellers which it is hoped will prevent this in future. The work is not yet complete as more dragon‘s teeth ( the wooden posts) will be required at the top end of the track leading to Hafod and Summerfield and further ditching will be required along the left-hand side of the track across the Village Green from Goddards Lane to Greenway. Vacancy for a Parish Councillor Members said goodbye to Lucy Marshall this month who has resigned to spend more time with her family. Thanks go to Lucy for all her work on the Parish Council, particularly as Chairman to the Finance and General Purposes Committee and as councillor with responsibility for schools and emergency planning. This does mean that there is a vacancy in the Sherfield-on-Loddon Ward which, in the absence of requests for an election, will probably be filled by co-option. If you are interested in becoming a parish councillor, please send your details to the parish clerk by 31 October. THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Reported by Ilene Iles

D ee Bulpitt, our President, welcomed everyone to our September Meeting and remarked that, at least, we did not get soaked as we arrived. Jerusalem was sung and the Minutes read and signed.

Val Denny dealt with the correspondence and reminded those wishing to attend the Anvil Council Meeting on the 20th October to put their names on the list. Evelyn Holdaway gave the Treasurer‘s Report and Dee confirmed that there would be a walk this month. Birthday cards were handed out and Catherine Wright confirmed that the Book Stall is going well but asked Members to bring as well as buy. Members were encouraged to sign a petition against the abolition of cheques. Several Members mentioned that they had received replies from our M.P. with regard to ―the country of origin labelling of food‖ campaign. The Business Meeting closed at 2.47.

Dee then introduced our Speaker, Mrs Jean Collett, whose subject was ―Hearing Dogs for Deaf People‖. Mrs Collett brought ―Macwhirter‖ – a little Llasa Apso – with her and explained that he was on holiday with her while her deaf owner was on holiday in America. Mrs Collett began her talk by letting us know that the Society started at Crufts in 1982 and is 50 years younger than Guide Dogs for the Blind. She joined the scheme in 1988 with an 8 week old puppy. She explained that most of the dogs come from rescue centres although they do have a very small breeding scheme. Not all dogs are suitable - working dogs such as border collies etc., and they need to be under 3 years old and ―people and dog friendly‖. It costs £10,000 to ―socialise‖ and train the dogs and they remain the property of the charity. Mrs Collett showed us a video of people using their dogs and how the dogs alert their ―owners‖ to noises the hearing take for granted – door and alarm bells, running water, telephones etc. and it was touching to watch little Macwhirter react to the noises. She emphasised that all training is done by reward – nutritious snacks. To compensate they are given a little less food. She went on to say that they are only able to train 150 dogs a year and fund raising is essential. Not every dog is quite good enough and the ―fallen angels‖ are available for re-homing. Mrs Collett ended by answering questions. Ilene Iles gave the vote of thanks for a very touching and informative talk.

A t NWR‘s recent meeting we read a play ‗After September‘ by Jimmie Chinn. It was based at a small private girls‘ school in the 1960s with an

almost all-female cast, there being only one man! There were eight teachers, including the headmistress and owner of the school, the secretary/administrator/matron and the cook. All the teachers were spinsters and had been at the school for some considerable time. The play starts with the staff returning after the long summer holidays and discussing their grievances with the school. Eventually, the one man in the play, a school inspector, arrives with threats of closing down the school, much to the dismay of everyone. He had received two letters of complaint and would not reveal who had sent them. There was also the added drama of the head‘s missing dog! As we read the play, we all recognised the characters of the teachers from our own schooldays. This light comedy made for a very pleasant evening. Our next meeting will be a music evening. We had one last year and all enjoyed it so much that we decided to include it in our programme for this year. This time, in keeping with our ‗Back to the 60s‘ and ‗Golden Anniversary‘ themes, we‘ll choose our favourite music from the 60s – and much of it is still enjoyed by the young of today! O ur speaker for the August meeting was Brian Martin who gave us a talk about Guide Dogs for the Blind. He came with a lady called Ellen who is a trainer and she

explained her role in the training of the puppies who will eventually bacome guide dogs when they have completed the necessary training.

Brian talked about how a guide dog has enhanced his life, the many benefits and companionship they give and the freedom and security in today's world.

We hear so many terrible stories in the media about attacks by dogs so this is a reminder of how dogs help many people live a fuller life.

Ellen came with a puppy she is training at present as well as Brian with his guide dog, and they were very well behaved.

A collection was made during the meeting in which £34.20 was collected in aid of the Guide Dogs.

Our September meeting was a lively discussion about our programme and outings for next year. This was followed by tea and biscuits and an enjoyable game of bingo.

33 Years of Inter Village Cricket in Stratfield Turgis & Hartley Wespall

A Report from David Syckelmoore

T he annual village cricket match between Stratfield Turgis and Hartley Wespall was played on Sunday 22nd August 2010 in glorious sunshine.

A mixture of youth and experience took the field with the former shining brightest.

The first match was played in 1977 after the village had celebrated the Queens Silver Jubilee with a fete in a meadow on my fathers family farm. The skippers then were James Russell for Hartley Wespall and myself for

Stratfield Turgis. The match has since developed into an annual event of keen, friendly rivalry with a focus on family involvement.

This years match was organised and captained by Giles Toosey for Stratfield

Turgis and Billy Wilson for Hartley Wespall who injected much fun and enthusiasm both on and off the field. A barbeque lunch and

traditional tea was provided for all. The final result, a draw.

It is with a twinge of sadness that I say goodbye to the village, but it is time to move on to pastures new.

A special thanks go to my family, Margaret, Peter and Tom, the Parish

Chair Sheila Campbell and the Stratfield Turgis and Hartley Wespall Cricket Club for all the help and support over the years.
