I would like to take a few minutes to tell you about Impact Academy. Impact
Academy is a blended and virtual school program where students can take most or
all of their courses online but still remain an active part of their home school by
participating in sports and other extracurricular activities. The program starts in 6th
grade and is open to all Henry County Schools students 6-12.
Impact Academy has students taking online courses from across Henry
County. Students in IA have access to face to face teachers when they need it and
participate in normal school activities like field trips and hands on activi-
ties. Students can all take their core courses online but can also take many unique
elective courses like Chinese, technology, PE, and many more.
We will be holding a series of spring meetings for parents interested in learning
more. Mark your calendar for April 24 and April 28 at the Henry County Schools
Board of Education Building.
We will also have three regional meetings:
May 1- OHS Media Center
May 13 - LHS Media Center
May 20 - SHS Media Center

What Spring Will Bring' Achoo
Bed sheets on the line flapping in the breeze,
Blooming flowers that make me sneeze,
Bees awakened gathering for honey,
Pollen makes my nose real runny,
Puffy white clouds and crisp blue skies,
Itchy watery red rimmed eyes,
Cutting hay with a baler,
As I reach for my inhaler,
Spring makes my allergies an issue,
Does anyone happen to have a tissue?

Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger in l986 designated each April as “The
Month of the Military Child”. Recognizing the contribution that military children
make as their parents serve our nation, it is during April of each year that all branches
of services provide special days and events to honor the family and their children.
Military children, as they grow and become youth into the teenage years, are an
inspiration and a source of pride for our nation. Frequent moves and family
separations through deployments, and then the reintegration issues make life
especially challenging. Often military children are looked up to for their resilience
and ability to deal with life changing events.
Students who have a parent or parents in active duty military were recognized on
Tuesday, April 22nd by LGMS.

Chess Club
The LGMS Chess Club has been steadily growing in size and skill. We have completed
the purchase of 12 new boards and are hoping to add to that total soon. We are still
collecting the $10 dues to help pay for the boards and other projects we are working
on. The Chess Club meets each Tuesday and Thursday from 830 until class begins, if a
day is cancelled we make it up the following day. Some of the projects our students are
working on include…
1. Human chess game with students as moving pieces on a life size board, this will
happen May 5th (Cinco de Mayo) during school hours.
2. Chess tournament to allow kids to show off their skills and determine the top
chess players in the school. This will happen Tuesday, May 13th from 5-9 in the
cafeteria. We hope to have a good turnout so please come and invite others.
3. Large chess set that students have been creating from scratch. They have used
plastic bottles and papier-mâché to create an extremely large set of chess pieces.
They will be played during the human chess game and the chess tournament.
4. T-shirts The club has discussed creating Chess Club t-shirts to show pride in
their club. The kids are still working on their design and where to get them from,
but it is in the works.
The Chess Club is always looking for new members. The academic and social benefits
of chess are well documented, just Google it.

Chess helps students improve their math and critical thinking skills. It also allows
students to meet many kids from various backgrounds they would not otherwise
socialize with. This Chess Club is student driven; they have come up with the ideas and
made them happen. We will always welcome new members and help from the
community is always appreciated. Our goal is to spread to different schools so that we
would be able to have a chess league. The Chess Club will continue to build on our
success and I am just happy to be a part of this great club the kids have started.

What’s Going on in Class…
Team 702- Broderick - Life Science is gearing up for the CRCT. This year we
completed units in science inquiry, Cells, Genetics, Evolution, Classification of living
things, Ecology and Human Body Systems. Our students showed their proficiency by
completing projects for each unit, quizzes and CFA’s.
We are currently working on our combined unit project to help us review all our
standards for the CRCT. Students have the option of demonstrating mastery of the
standards in differentiate ways by choose to create a book, poster, PowerPoint, web
page. Parents look out for this project because it due on April 21. The idea is to
complete the review before the CRCT. Study tip – Student should have every
assignment complete in their science folders. Students should be able to show their
parents at least two science folders with assignments from fall semester and spring
semester.
