The Mission of Town Square Market in Carbondale is simple: to promote sustainable living by providing wholesome food, supplements and earth-friendly household supplies. Since October 2006, Town Square Market has been carrying out this mission by working with local growers, suppliers and crafters to help build the local community. They want to provide our neighbors with a way to make a living and give customers great products to buy. “We saw that there was a need for an alternative to the big box grocery stores,” Co-owner Alexander Pellow says. “An alternative that offered food that is good for us and a store that really addresses our values in terms of what products

are offered, where they come from, and how healthy they are for our bodies and for the environment.” Pellow adds, “We want to keep the store simple and easy to shop in. We’re not a store that tries to have everything. We want shoppers to fi nd a well-balanced selection of the items they need, plus a few hard-to-fi nd items. We’re happy to satisfy special requests, and try to do as many things as we can to help people feel like it’s their store.” That also means offering outstanding customer service. “The level of attention we give to our customers is one you rarely see anywhere else,” he adds. “Plus we do lots of research on our products so that customers don’t have to.

They can feel confi dent that we have an optimal selection of a good balance between what is right for them and the environment and what is right for their pocket. Even our vitamins and supplements have been hand-selected by a local health practitioner who knows what works. We also have the most complete selection of homeopathic remedies in the region.” Especially popular is the Town Square Market’s growing organic bakery and deli selection. Pellow says it is an area of the store which will be growing to meet increasing demands. “We’re going to continue to expand our deli items,” he says. “We get a lot of positive responses from people who love

being able to come in and get a quick, convenient and healthy lunch. People say they love our sandwiches, wraps and pasta salad. It’s fast, delicious and made with natural ingredients found in the store.” He says soups and fresh salads are going to be among new items in the deli soon. “We already offer sesame broccoli, Szechuan green beans, kale salad and pasta salad, which are all great for lunch or to take home for the family, but we have lots of recipes for other salads we want to offer.” The Town Square Market is also recognized for its unique bakery items. “We are the only store in Southern Illinois that offers fresh German bread baked in the traditional manner. We have customers that come

from miles away just for our bread.” The Town Square Market understands it is part of a greater community, Pellow says. “We are very focused on being a local Southern Illinois business that tries to support other Southern Illinois businesses. We are devoted to supporting local artisans and farmers. We have locally made greeting cards, arts and crafts and personal care products. We also carry locally grown produce, honey, eggs and meat. When you eat food that was produced where you live, it not only costs less, it tastes better and is better for the environment.”

If you were to do a little research, you could easily learn that Time magazine made its debut on American newsstands in 1923. That same year the New York Yankees unveiled a new stadium in the Bronx called Yankee Stadium, also known as “The House that Ruth Built.” And a guy named Roy, along with his little brother Walt, started a little company that you may have heard of. They called it the Walt Disney Company. Fast forward eighty-nine years…the old Yankee Stadium has been replaced by a newer one, but the team that plays there is more successful than any team in baseball. Time magazine is still a respected source for news, and Walt Disney World is one of the best-known brands in the world. Another company that got its start that same year is right here in our backyard. Yes, it was 1923 when Ed Vogler Sr. started Vogler Motor Company in Carbondale, Ill. And like those other companies, Vogler has stood the test of time. The New York Yankees didn’t win 27 World Series by accident. They built a tradition of winning and excellence that their fans and players have come to expect and that they can take great pride in. Like the Yankees, Vogler has spent decades cultivating an atmosphere of family with a strong commitment to excellence as well. To be a part of the Vogler team is a great source of pride for its employees. Time magazine didn’t become the respected news source that it is by reporting news that wasn’t backed up with facts and reported by people with ethics. Andy you can’t sell and service cars in the same town for 89 years without telling people the truth, and if you don’t have strong ethics, word gets around

pretty fast. A company like Disney continues to be a leader in customer satisfaction by going above and beyond to make their customers happy. If something is wrong, they make it right. People travel from around the globe to visit Disney parks. That same philosophy has propelled Vogler to the top when it comes to customer satisfaction. They stand behind what they sell and people come from all over Southern Illinois and further to buy from a dealer they know they can trust. You don’t last 89 years without a strong commitment to whatever it is that you are doing. That’s the nuts and bolts of what makes Vogler Motor Company the business that it is today. Vogler has remained true to its mission statement of striving to make sure that every customer is completely satisfi ed. They believe the way to achieve that goal is by culturing an environment where long-term relationships are the standard. Since the beginning in 1923, Ed Vogler Sr. stressed

a family tradition of honesty, trust and integrity. Those values were handed down to sons Ed and Don, who owned the store until their retirements. When the time came for them to step down, they looked within the Vogler organization for the next ‘generation’ to carry it on. Frank Black began his career at Vogler as a salesman on a ‘temporary’ basis, working his way up to become the next owner, and ended up serving the family business for over 50 years. Just like the Vogler family did with him, Frank looked within for his successors, and that brings us to where we are today in 2012. Dennis Rathjen and Bryan Black are the current owners. Both of these men ‘cut their teeth’ in the automotive business, learning how to do it the Vogler way. Like Frank, they started at entry level positions and worked their way through the dealership until it was their turn to pick up the torch and carry it forward. So, although there isn’t anyone named Vogler who is involved in the operation of

the business, the core values have been handed down from generation to generation, and are ingrained in the minds of those who lead Vogler Motor Company forward today. “We’re proud of what the Vogler family started and we do our best to honor that. We believe that it truly is the best way to operate our business,” said Dennis Rathjen. “Truth, honesty and integrity is important, especially in this business.” Because of the atmosphere and philosophy of the store, it is very rare from someone to leave Vogler for another job in the auto industry. President and Owner Dennis Rathjen has been with the company since 1972. Co-owner Bryan Black started in 1977. That’s 40 and 35 years respectively! The Vogler sales staff is no different. Of the 14 sales staff employees, the average tenure with Vogler Motor Company is over 11 years. Compare that with any other store and you’ll fi nd that something different is happening at Vogler Motor Company.

New Car Sales Manager Tim Hirsch has been with the company for 15-plus years. “It’s really about relationships.Working here is like being with your family, and that carries over to the way we try to treat people who do business with us. They’re part of the Vogler family too.” The business operates sales and service of new Ford, Lincoln and Mazda products at their facility across from University Mall in Carbondale at 1170 E. Main St. They also run a collision center and major parts distribution center from their other location at 301 N. Illinois Ave., where they also own and operate four NAPA Auto Parts stores. The others are in Murphysboro, Herrin and Marion. Time Magazine, the New York Yankees and Walt Disney World each have something in common with Vogler Motor Company. The one thing Vogler has that the other top companies don’t: Vogler is locally owned!

A beautiful home interior goes beyond the living room, the bedrooms and dining rooms. To have a truly remarkable living space, careful attention has to be paid to the kitchen as well as the bathrooms. That means beautiful quality cabinets and vanities from Quality Cove, located just off Ava Road, north of Muphysboro. Quality Cove is where people from all across the region get custom cabinets without the custom prices.Owner Roger Twenhafel is no novice when it comes to providing great cabinets. For many years he was proprietor of Apple City Cabinets at the same location. Today, along with designer Jane Boice, Quality Cove offers a wide range of

cabinet styles and features, with outstanding customer service. We have nine lines of cabinets, including three cherries, white fi nishes and the darks, which are very popular right now,” Twenhafel said. “Every cabinet you see on display is available in each fi nish.” All of the cabinets are quality solid-wood construction and include features such as soft-closing drawers and drawer bottoms made of half-inch plywood. Quality Cove offers a spacious 8,000-square-foot showroom with dozens of bathroom vanities on display and a large number of sample kitchens. Quality Cove expanded into kitchen and bathroom

countertops this year, and they now specialized in laminate countertops including the new high defi nition countertops with the look of granite. Quality Cove can customize your countertop to your specifi c needs and offers in-home templating. For the bathroom, Quality Cove offers standard size granite counters with under mount bowls or Custom Marble with the customers’ specifi ed bowl. To assist with customers’ homes, Boice works with homeowners from start to fi nish for a one-of-a-kind custom kitchen or bathroom. “We use a state-of-the-art designing program and work closely with our customers,”

Roger Twenhafel said. “We ask people to just give us the rough estimates of their kitchen to get started, then we do the rest.” The software allows Boice to show customers and contractors a 3-D image of how their cabinets will look and fi t into their homes. Once the design is complete, Quality Cove customers do not have to wait long for their new kitchen or bath. Twenhafel shared the story of a customer who was considering having their existing cabinets resurfaced and who had several estimates for the work. “However, we were able to rebuild their entire kitchen with new cabinets and countertops for less than it would have cost

them just to have the old ones resurfaced,” he said. He said that many of the oak cabinets available at Quality Cove are priced the same as the cabinets found in the back row of the large stores, but, he said, there is a huge difference in quality. “This is a very, very high quality cabinet,” he said, adding that Quality Cove can offer many features as well, things like glass-front cabinet doors and designer hardware.

A Little Bit of Italyin Herrin, IL

Walk into Louie’s P & R, and you know something is different. There’s just no place like it in all of Southern Illinois. Tuscan markets are not that common in our area. Then again, there’s nowhere like Louie’s P & R. Louie’s is Herrin’ original Italian deli, dating back to the late 1890s. It’s an authentic Italian grocery store; perhaps best known for its daily meat specials—things like Italian sausages, salameats, luganiga, bratwurst and other favorites. There’s a wide selection, too, of specialty cheeses and an array of dry goods not commonly found in Southern Illinois. “We offer unique products that shoppers seek out in the region,” Tony Gauldoni, owner says. “We pride ourselves on offering a good variety but, at the same time, keeping a high-quality selection of products.” Constantly searching for new products, Gauldoni makes frequent trips to St. Louis to discover the best products for Southern Illinois kitchens. Tony grew up in the business. In fact, Tony’s father – the Louie in Louie’s P & R—bought the deli in 1957. Tony and his wife Alisa have owned and operated the business since 1990. Over the years he has developed a real “feel” for the needs and wants of his customers, whom he enjoys visiting with and helping every day. “I really take pride in what we do. It is our goal to make sure everything we do and offer is of the highest quality,” he adds.

That means growing and changing to meet customer needs. The vast selection at Louie’s is constantly growing and renovations to the store a few years ago not only improved the shopping experience, it also improved the dining experience—giving patrons a comfortable place to take a break and enjoy a fresh-made sandwich, made-to-order soup or fabulous salad while visiting or using the free Wi-Fi service. Specials on meat are offered each Friday and Saturday. Gauldoni says the deals help people get a great price on staple items. Packaged meat specials provide customers with an easy and affordable way to stock freezers with quality meats. Louie’s even brings in unique specialty products for the holiday season each year. Louie’s P & R has become a place of legend. Customers drive from all over Southern Illinois for meats and other products. Even former residents make pilgrimages to Louie’s during visits. “Customers are always our No. 1 concern the minute they walk through the door,” Gualdoni said. “Hopefully, they fi nd our environment friendly and will keep coming back to see us. You would be surprised, though, the number of people in town who had never been in this grocery before despite how long we’ve been in business. So, we’re making new customers - and new friends - all the time.”

Laura Roach, PT/owner, and her staff offer an array of physical therapy services to the southern Illinois area. At HR Physical Therapy you can always count on personalized care from a licensed physical therapist with each visit. Unlike many “revolving door” facilities you will receive consistent, continuous care from Laura, Amy and Rachel. Our highly trained and specialized physical therapists offer services for neck and low back pain, lower body ailments, post surgical procedures,

motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries, balance and coordination issues, plus many other outpatient diagnoses. A heated pool is available for a wide variety of aquatic therapies. Our main goal is to help restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain and prevent further injury through patient and family education. HR Physical Therapy believes that each patient should be fully knowledgeable of their condition and the proper treatment options available. As stated in the PT Magazine in October 1999, “Physical therapists are good people to know. They’re educated in understanding the interaction

of all your body parts. Their hands-on approach begins with examination, diagnosis, and treatment of the immediate problem. Then they teach you how to take care of yourself by showing you how to do

exercises and how to use your body properly to gain strength and mobility and prevent recurring injury. You’ll fi nd them advising on proper posture and body motion in the work place, treating injuries,

consulting on fi tness and administering physical therapy.” At HR Physical Therapy, the atmosphere is a family friendly environment and the employeeswork hard to provide the best patient care at an optimum cost. We are located behind Logan Primary Care at 3308 Logan Drive in Herrin and are open early morning and late evenings to accommodate before and after work and school schedules. Laura and her staff invite you to stop in for a tour or just give us a call. For some, total health might mean an absence of illness, but for the professionals at Total Health Chiropractic and Acupuncture Clinic in Herrin, the phrase means much more. When Dr. Kelly Chullen-Hoppers and her staff work to bring “total health” to patients and clients, it means allowing those individuals to live the life they desire. “We really try to look at the patient as a whole to achieve both our medical goals and to allow them to achieve what they want to do,” Dr. Chullen-Hoppers said. “Whether it’s wanting to be able to play with the grandchildren or just being able to walk around the mall. When they say they want to achieve something, that’s absolutely what we try to help them do.”With that philosophy, the staff at Total Health Chiropractic and Acupuncture takes a “big picture” approach to providing care through a variety of treatment strategies and techniques. “What makes us unique is our approach with lots of different options,” she said.

“It’s not cookie-cutter treatment. We work with the patient to fi nd the best option in each case.” Services include chiropractic adjustments, electrical stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound, massage therapy, physiotherapy, acupuncture and non-surgical spinal decompression. She added that while people often related chiropractic care to conditions of the back and spine, treatments are not limited to that area. Patients come to the clinic for treatments for neck pain, problems with hips, knees, legs or even wrists. Treatments also include education and discussions of natural solutions to common health problems, all of which can lead to an improved quality of life, improving the way patients feel and giving Dr. Chullen-Hoppers a sense of satisfaction. “It’s very rewarding when someone tells me that they can do something now that they weren’t able to do for a long time because of something we’ve done.”

When Celia Robertson started House 2 Home Realty fi ve years ago, she never dreamed the agency would be

so successful as quickly as it has been. Turns out, many homebuyers and sellers are looking for a break

from high commissions. In fact, House 2 Home Realty has saved sell-ers and buyers more than $500,000 in only a few short years.

“When I began my career in real estate at another agency, it didn’t take me long to fi gure out that I needed to offer clients other options, especially when it came to commissions,” Robertson says. “I am willing to take a cut on the listing side of the transaction, which allows the seller to come down on their asking price. In turn, that makes their home much more marketable, especially in a very competitive market.” Her realization has worked for her own agency, as well as dozens of satisfi ed customers. In fact, in fi ve years, House 2 Home has sold millions of dollars in real estate. House 2 Home works with a team of agents, all with the same approach as Robertson. Sellers pay only a one-time listing fee and have all of the advantages and perks you receive with any other real estate company charging higher commissions. The net result could be a savings of thousands of dollars. Plus, House 2 Home makes sure listings receive expo-sure through traditional means, such as advertising and

home guides and inclusion on the Multiple Listings Service database, as well as Trulia, Zillow, Craigslist and other Internet home-selling websites. There is even an op-tion of being a FSBO while you are listed on the MLS. It makes for happy buyers and sellers who save on commissions, and it started with Robertson’s insight. An obstacle Robertson has had to overcome is public knowledge that you don’t need a big franchise to sell your home. “I always ask my sellers the same ques-tion. If you were looking for a home would you ONLY look at a brand name franchise home for sale?” No. It doesn’t matter who’s sign is in the yard; what matters is location, price and the bottom line when the deal closes. “I’m in this to help people, and I will bend over backwards to do it,” she says. “That’s just how I am.”

The role of the SIU Credit Union is simple, says Dennis Schaefer, the president and CEO of the almost-30,000 member fi nancial institution. “We’re here to serve our members and to serve our communities,” he explains. The SIU Credit Union continues to fulfi ll its roll by providing a wide range of fi nancial services to people in 11 Southern Illinois counties. “All you have to do to be a member of SIU Credit Union is live or work in one of the counties we serve,” says Marketing Director Karli Feldhake. Feldhake says one of the real differences between the credit union and a traditional bank, is

that credit unions operate on a cooperative principle, where every customer is an owner. “We are member-owned, not serving a paid board of directors or outside owners,” she says. “It is this cooperative approach that allows us to provide better rates and better service.” Just $5 purchases customers a share of ownership. Schaefer says that in many ways, credit unions are similar to community banks, but are different in other ways. One unique characteristic is that users of credit unions are the owners, each purchasing a share in the entity as part of their initial deposit. Profi ts from the credit unions are returned to members in the forms of higher

interest rates on savings or other investment accounts and lower loan rates. There are new services, too. Feldhake says members now benefi t from a program called “shared branching” which expands the credit union’s fi ve branches (Carbondale East, Carbondale West, Marion, Massac County and Energy) into thousands of locations nationwide. “Essentially, we have joined a network of credit unions that allows our members to handle their transactions at any one of the credit unions in the network, regardless of if they’re here, in California, New York or even Germany or Korea,” she explains. “You can go into any

one of the 4,500 participating credit union branches just like you would into one of our locations.” Members of the SIU Credit Union have access to more than 65,000 free ATMs around the country — a network is larger than those of some national fi nancial institutions, including Bank of America. The ATMs often can be found in convenient locations including retailers and gas stations. The machines at all of the SIU Credit Union locations have recently been upgraded. “They now accept deposits, so if you can’t make it to a branch during the business hours, you can drive or walkup to the ATM and make the deposit. Your

receipt will include an image of the checks you’ve deposited,” Feldhake explained. She added that other new services, including the ability to apply for a loan completely from the credit union’s website have recently been launched. A student loan program is coming later this summer. It’s all part of the SIU Credit Union’s mission to serve its members.

Having your car repaired, maintained or detailed is a sort of a guessing game. You wonder if it will be fi xed correctly, how much it will cost, if the shop will have the parts you need and if the fi x will cost what they originally told you. But at Bush’s Garage and Detailing on N. 14th Street behind Casey’s in Herrin, Glen Bush and his sons still do business the old-fashioned way, where things are done right, on time and for the price you expected. “We do business in and old-fashioned way,” owner Glen Bush says. “That means being honest, trustworthy and dependable.” Bush’s is not your average repair shop. They work on both the inside and outside of cars as well. Not only do they do repairs and maintenance like tire rotations and oil changes, but they also offer complete detailing service for cars, trucks, boats and motorcycles. They’re even open longer than most other shops (Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) making having your vehicle serviced convenient. You can

make appointments if you want, but even if you just drive up, Bush’s will try to accommodate you and your car while you wait. “We do oil changes, tire rotations, washes and vacuuming while you wait,” Bush says. “Unlike the other shops, I stock much of what we need in the way of air fi lters, oil fi lters, wiper blades and such, so we can get people in and out in a hurry.” The business began as a hobby for Bush, but has grown into a family affair: his sons, a nephew and other family members work alongside Bush in the newly expanded garage. The detailing portion of the business continues to grow, thanks in part to the high quality work and frequent specials. Bush says customers appreciate the staff’s attention to detail both with their cars and with the facility. “We get a lot of compliments on the neatness and organization of our shop,” he says. “That’s just the way we do business.”

There’s something special about Amazon Salon in Herrin. Maybe it’s the fact that Amazon has been around for 12 years, with experienced staff members and stylists. Or, maybe it’s that they’re the only Creative Nail Design Shellac certifi ed salon in the area. Perhaps, it’s the way clients feel—both inside and out—when they have been pampered at Amazon. Whatever it is, customers from all over the reason know that Amazon Salon is the place for hair, nails, massages and more. “We try to offer things that are pertinent to Southern Illinois, without getting too far out there,” says Holly Burks, owner of Amazon Salon. Some of the big day spa concepts are too much for area residents; we want people who don’t have hundreds of dollars to spend to be able to take care of themselves on a $30 or $40 level. We don’t want them to come in just once every six months, we want them to be able to have special treatment once a month or every few weeks for a much more reasonable price.”

That special treatment includes a variety of services. Amazon has six hair stylists, three nail technicians and a massage therapist all ready to help you look and feel your best. “We provide all of the standard hair services, color including specialty colors,” she explains. “We also do nails and most of our nails clients are gel. We have a lot of specialized training in that. We are the only creative nail design shellac certifi ed salon in the area.”Burks added that Amazon meets “all of the basic needs,” including pedicures, manicures, waxing and massages. “We try to be fair and we base everything on honesty and integrity. We want everyone to leave Amazon Salon extremely happy with us and with themselves. We have a different atmosphere than most salons. We’re more fun and offer an enjoyable environment. Everybody walks out feeling so much better about themselves—not just with their physical appearance, but we try to lift people up emotionally too.”

Watch for our 12th Anniversary

Celebration in late July!

From the moment customers walk in the door of TJ’s Fine Jewelry in Carbondale, it is obvious that it is different than other jewelry stores. There’s no high-pressure sales pitch, the people are friendly and the surroundings are comfortable. You feel comfortable and welcome, free to look around and ask questions. “I know it sounds corny,” Martin says, “but the way we treat our customers is different. They’re not just customers, they’re our friends.” To take care of his friends, Martin and the rest of the staff will go out of their way to provide the very best in jewelry. He regularly makes trips to markets in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York to fi nd the latest designs and trends—something that very few jewelers in the area do any more. Plus, the emphasis is not on making the sale, rather TJ’s Fine Jewelry wants to meet customers’ needs. “I love to educate and help customers gain knowledge of the products and earn their trust and business,” Martin explains. “Do not mistake our not being pushy for not wanting your business. We’re very laid back, but at the same

time, we’ll do anything we can to earn your business. The education process not only includes making certain customers understand the products, but also giving them the opportunity to shop other stores. Martin says his years of experience and contacts in the industry helps his store provide the very best jewelry at affordable prices. “We want you to know that you’re getting a good deal. If I can’t win you with quality, price and great service, then I don’t deserve your business,” he says. A long-time Southern Illinois resident, Martin also has a commitment to the region. The store frequently donates to charitable causes and supports local organizations and agencies. Plus, as an independently owned business, not a giant chain store, TJ’s Fine Jewelry is proud to be part of the community. “If you spend your money here, it stays within this community,” Martin says.

Fish Tales is a Southern Illinois tradition. Some 20 years ago, the store opened as a small pet shop in Herrin. In 1997, the store moved to the Illinois Centre Mall in Marion, expanding just a few years later with the “Groom Room,” a place dedicated to pampering pets and making them look better.

Today, Fish Tales remains as one of the region’s top stores for pets and pet supplies. Owner Linda Hooker says the store has been successful because all of the staff are experienced and the store is locally-focused.

“Most of us have been here for years and we know a lot,” she says, adding that they are happy to answer questions about prospective and current pets. She says they’ve heard everything from questions about what to feed a lizard to “my hamster just had babies; what do I do?” and more. “We know all of these things. We have the experience to help our customers out.”

Hooker says that the staff is helpful because they know they’ll be seeing the customers again.

“We’re not a chain, we’re locally owned. That means we care more about people and their pets. It’s not just a job and we’re not just employees; we’re neighbors and friends,” she says.

And for all of its two decades, Fish Tales has provided area residents with love in the form of dogs, cats, fresh and saltwater fi sh, hamsters, guinea pigs, reptiles and more.

“We treat every pet with the utmost love and consideration from the littlest mouse to the biggest puppy. We take our customers’ needs seriously and take the time to make sure every pet will get the proper care it needs,” Hooker explains.

Fish Tales is proud of its tradition of growing along with the pets of the region. In fact, the store will be growing again as they move back to Herrin in 2013. The new location will allow Fish Tales to grow in lots of ways, including an expanded saltwater fi sh selection and everything necessary for water gardening.

Fish Tales in the Illinois Centre Mall is the area’s No. 1 choice for the best in pets, pet supplies and advice you can trust.

Dave and Karen Jackson of Jackson Pools and Spas, LLC are honored to be one of the top ten Doughboy Pools dealers in volume. They were notifi ed in August of 2011 and have only been in business since March of 2010. Dave says, "It is an honor to do business with a great company like Doughboy, I have been selling Doughboy pools for over 20 years. They are the best on the market. We pride ourselves on customer service." Dave and Karen Jackson met when he sold her a pool and hot tub. His honesty and low-pressure approach won her over. Three weeks after her purchase, they went on their fi rst date; seven weeks later, they were married. Karen, who had always been self-employed, encouraged Dave to start his own company, so the 20-year industry veteran and his wife used the proceeds from the sale of some property and started Jackson Pools and Spas. Jackson Pools and Spas have already expanded to three locations. They have locations in West Frankfort, DuQuoin and their newest location in Coulterville. The stores offer a full range

of supplies for their customers such as Baquacil, Pool Logic, Wave, Swimline fl oats, MASTER SPAS and DOUGHBOY POOLS. With the down economy, the couple knows they are fortunate to have success and make a point to give back what they can. "We're not driving brand new fancy vehicles," Dave says. "We want to be givers. I'm lucky that I have a wife who agrees with me on that." Sponsoring sporting events, a student-of-the-month program, raising money for children with cancer and handing out candy on Halloween are just a few of the ways the Jacksons give back to the community. "It is a huge part of the business," Karen says. "I think for me, and for him, we never want to forget where we came from.""We're keeping the whole family going," Dave says. "In this day, in this economy, I'm taking every year and just thanking the good Lord because that's the thing with this industry: It's fi ckle at times, so you really have to watch what you're doing and be thankful for what you've got."

Clark Natural Stone LLC started as a trucking company Clark Farms Trucking, Inc. owned by Stephen D. Clark. We started selling decorative rock in 1999 and it has grown steadily from then. All of Stephen’s children have worked with the company since the early 90’s. In spring of 2009 the 3 children purchased Clark Farms Trucking, Inc. and renamed the decorative rock business Clark Natural Stone LLC. Nothing has changed you will even still see Stephen D. Clark delivering and loading rock even though he is supposedly retired. We sell to everyone individual and landscapers. You may have your landscaper come out and pick up the rock that you purchased or you may have them purchase it for you. You may come after hours and look at the rock. Everything is marked with a name, bin#, and price. You may call and in most cases get same day delivery or delivery whenever you choose. You may also bring your own pickup and trailer and we will load it.

We have state certifi ed scales and we weigh all of the decorative rock and driveway rock. So you know exactly the amount you are paying for. We offer delivery service with a smaller tandom truck and 2 stone slinger trucks. Our stone slingers are becoming more and more popular. They have a conveyor belt on the end of the truck bed that projects the rock up to 60 feet. Our customers have had us deliver rock and put it in driveways, basements, and even their landscape. It places the rock pretty evenly. We have quick service and you don’t have to hunt down an employee or fi nd a department to get waited on.

Customers can immediately tell when a store or pharmacy puts customers fi rst. That’s why so many people choose the Medicine Shoppes in Marion, Harrisburg and Ridgway as their source for all of their health care needs. Unlike those big box stores, the Medicine Shoppe offers friendly service, fast pharmacy services, close convenient parking and advice and assistance without long lines and unknowledgeable staff. “Our clinical services are superior to any other in the area,” says Angie Tresso, sales representative for Medicine Shoppe. “Plus, our pharmacy is a specialized care center. This means we reach above and beyond to serve and meet the unique health care needs of our customers.” Each of the stores offers pharmacy services, clinical services, medication management and home medical equipment – including oxygen and sleep therapy. In fact, the Medicine Shoppes are proud that they offer licensed respiratory therapists who make ongoing visits with respiratory equipment patients. Walk into the Medicine Shoppe and

you’ll fi nd practically anything you need to care for yourself and loved ones. They even carry a complete line of variety lift chairs – in fact, the Harrisburg store has 14 different models on display, making it easy to fi nd the perfect chair! “We’re a complete center for all facets of home medical care,” Steve Ledbetter, CEO, said. “Many people consider us a one-stop shop for their health needs.”He says that service at all three Medicine Shoppe locations means having highly-qualifi ed and friendly pharmacists available for consultations and questions. “We try to instill a service-oriented approach in taking care of people,” Ledbetter said, “and we’ve been doing that since opening our fi rst store in Harrisburg in 1983.” He added that taking care of customers through outstanding customer service has allowed the Medicine Shoppes to expand into Marion in 1985 and Ridgway in 2006. The key to the stores’ success is service. “The fact that we’ve been in business so long speaks volumes about our way of doing things, and that’s taking care of people,” he said.

There’s something special about a hometown physician; someone who cares not only for patients, but rather who knows and understands the region and its people. Dr. Mindy Moore of the Family Foot and Ankle Center of Southern Illinois is one of those physicians. Originally from Carterville and a graduate of both John A. Logan College and Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Dr. Moore opened the Family Foot and Ankle Center in Herrin the Fall of 2009 following graduation

from the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in North Chicago and a three-year surgical residency at Chicago’s Sacred Heart Hospital. “I wanted to come back home,” Moore said. “I want to continue to grow my practice right here, with my fi rst concern being the wants and needs of my patients. It is very rewarding to serve the residents in southern Illinois” In addition to Dr. Moore’s home offi ce in Herrin, she is also seeing patients in Harrisburg and Pinckneyville.

A 1 Buildings have been in business for over 20 years, and build approximately 100 buildings a year. That is a lot of crews and coordination, but it is a labor of love, say the owners David and Leslie Andrews. Each building requires a rolled metal panel to complete construction, and it was hard to fi nd a reliable source for metal that was near by. That was not a hurdle for this innovative couple. The simple solution was to manufacture the panels themselves, so in February of 2009, Heartland Metal Sales was started and the company grew even more.

“With thirty years in the post-frame building industry, it was a natural decision for us to offer these metal services as well,” Leslie Andrews said. “We know what kind of quality is needed to build a good building and how to make it look good and how to get the job done quickly and on time.” Heartland Metal Sales produces a variety of metal panels for buildings, roofs, commercial buildings, farm structures and carports. The company can provide metal for commercial, residential and agricultural application and complete accessory trim

components. “We also offer Energy-Star qualifi ed metal sheeting for building. This provides a tax incentive as well as energy savings that can help reduce costs.” she said. Andrews said that the company offers nearly 20 colors of metal, all produced to specifi cations given by the customer. Any length is available and with the wide variety of colors, we can work with our customers to make the buildings fi t in with their existing homes. “Our customers have been pleased that we take the time to work with them

and fi nd out what their needs are. Our building knowledge, coupled with the fact we can manufacture on site, gives us the perfect product for them. Quality, looks and an affordable price. It seems to be working. We’ve been at it now for over 20 years and we have a great crew.” She said. Even as a new company, Heartland Metals holds true to the same philosophy that customers of A-1 Buildings have come to appreciate – high quality products and an excellent reputation. “People deal with us because of our honesty,” David Andrews

said. “We work hard to make sure our customers get the kind of job delivered we would want.” Heartland Metals and A-1 Buildings serve about a 150 mile radius and include portions of Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Kentucky. They can be reached at their factory in Pittsburg, Illinois at 618- 983-5909 or 618-983-8600. www.heartlandmetalsales.com website or email us at [email protected].
