ENTER: Guadalupe/Oceano Sand-Dunes, where the story begins. Dune riding, driving, climbing “bad” hills had become a more and more popular sport in the late 50’s and early 60’s. And, as it happened one local S. M. Family was participating in the fun, when one of the members, a grand-mother, got hurt. Roland with his dune buggy just happened to be near. “Would you please help us to get moth-er to the hospital” said the gentleman, who owned a well respected plumbing fi rm in the Santa Maria Valley. (The Lanini family was acquainted with his, the plumber’s family, through CEF, a children’s ministry.) “I would be happy to help,” responded Roland. And away they went in his home-built “dune buggy,” which now substituted as an ambulance. It is interesting to note: The sand-dunes had begun to be a very popular place for the drivers and owners of the bug-gies for competition, challenging each other as who could climb the steepest hill and/or take the spookiest “bowl.” The owner-drivers out of necessity built their own buggies, scavenging parts and pieces from dumps, creek beds, crevices, and/or purchasing old, unused autos from local farmers, spending about $150. These were new times for Americans; the war was over, the ugly thirties depression past and demand for recreational equipment was growing, Readers Digest. ( also babies were popular again.) Ha! Roland, a farm-boy, being familiar with machinery, often rounded up some buddies of like-mind, spent many evenings and Saturdays in the Ranch garage building these buggies. It was into one of these buggies the two said

men lifted the injured woman.

As the group traveled along those twelve plus miles to the hospital, the grateful man asked his driver, “What do you do for a living?” “I work at General Box Co.” It was then that Roland shared his particular situa-tion regarding his present job, which he liked very much. But things were not looking so good for “wooden box-makers,” in that, the vegetable indus-try was moving toward cardboard boxes, which were cheaper to make. Roland had worked his way up to the top paying job at General Box Com-pany, which could bring in as much as $10,000 a year; including overtime. Which was equal to a teacher’s salary at that time. Warehouse-labor paid only about half that much. So it didn’t look good for his family income. “You can come and work with me,” responded Clayton. “Wow!”, said Ro-land, and so he did. Clayton, the own-er of Barks Plumbing, got Roland onto a Rehabilitation program which gave him $1.00 an hour and a nice supply of tools. With what the fi rm paid, his salary was equal to $5.00 per hour. It was an 8 to 5 position, fi ve days a week; but, the job required him to be on call seven days a week and 24 hours a day. As it were, he often brought in the most hours which were listed on the chalk board to encourage the workers. Roland was very appreciative towards Barks Plumbing for the oppor-tunity to learn the trade. Roland decided it was time to veture out on his own. Needing a co-signer, Roland and myself borrowed $5,000, bought a van for his tools and plumb-ing parts, and he was on his way,

ready for service-calls, and work. As he was walking out of the door to go to the answering service offi ce, Roland looked at me and said, “Do you think we should do this?” “Of course,” I re-sponded, being the more adventurous person in the family, with little hesita-tion or misgivings about stepping out into the new and untried world. In time we moved from the ranch-house to Santa Maria where it was easier to store parts, water heaters, and other plumbing supplies. The necessary bookkeeping (receipts, disbursements and such) were handled by me, as well as teaching school, which added up for her to sometimes 12 hours a day. Ad-ditional workers were added as de-mands for Lanini’s Plumbing services were increasing. And, just before we moved into our current dwelling, Ro-land found and rented a shop where he could store parts etc. He was greatly happy to hire Betty Small who does a great job dispatching plumbers, and keeping our books. She has been with us for 34 years. Later, her daughter Cheryl Salazar came into the fi rm and does a great job for us and has been with our company for 25 years. Our plumbers, Rafael Contreras, David Hernandez, Justin Hettler, Mike Kel-ley, Daniel Hernandez, Austin Hedrick and Ricardo Frost, work hard to keep Roland’s legacy continuing on.

I am very proud of my staff! Thank you Team! Eloise Lanini

Ever-Ready Electric was founded in Santa Maria in 1981 by Frank and Pat Culley. Frank and Pat, who were newly married, relocated from Los Angeles to be close to Pat’s parents, who lived in the Santa Ynez valley and raised Paint horses. Frank felt Santa Maria was a vibrant growing area and a good place to start our new business. Frank learned the electrical trade from his older brother while he was still in high school and graduated

from Santa Monica High. While working with the tools he also attended LA Trade Tech to study specialty areas. Frank studied for and received his California Electrical Contractors State license in his early 30’s. Before starting Ever-Ready Electric, Frank managed several electrical contracting businesses in the Lake Tahoe and Los Angeles areas. Frank is licensed in California as an Electrical (C-10) and as a General Contractor (B). In addition to general electrical service, maintenance and repair, Ever-Ready Electric is an authorized Service Center for Generac, Kohler, and Champion back-up Generators and Casablanca fans.

Pat works in the office answering the phones, and managing the financial and administrative end of the business. Her background as a Registered Nurse was in hospital nursing management, and outside pharmaceutical sales. She attended Hoover High School in Glendale and received her BSN in Nursing from Humboldt State University.

Rob Culwell, our lead electrician, has worked for Ever-Ready Electric for over 15 years. He was born and raised in Santa Maria and attended Joe Nightingale, Righetti and Allan Hancock College. While at Hancock College Rob studied architecture, engineering and environmental science. He became a State of California certified General Journeyman electrician in 2005. Rob’s wife Lori is a veterinary technician preparing to take her

State and National certification exams later this year.

Last but not least, our Daughter Elizabeth works as a litigation attorney for Jeffer Mangels Butler & Mitchell in Century City. She was born in Santa Maria in 1983, attended May Grisham and Righetti and received both her undergraduate and law degrees from USC.

Williams Homes: Celebrates GroWtH in tHe Central Coast

Celebrating unprecedented growth in California’s competitive new home marketplace, Williams Homes announces a new division has opened in the Central Coast to better serve its family of homeowners and sustain its exceptional level of quality and service. Joining the existing regions of Los Angeles/Ventura and Riverside/San Bernardino is the newly formed Central Coast division based in Santa Maria. Combined, the company offers more than 16 new home neighborhoods throughout California with more to come.

Steve Johnson, director of Central Coast construction operations, said the new division sets the stage for considerable growth in both the near future and in the years ahead.

Supporting the goal of being the best as opposed to simply the ‘biggest’ is Williams Homes’ conscientious approach to ‘building quality for a lifetime.’ This refreshing philosophy in such a competitive field stems from a focus to continually improve upon current successes, rather than to merely increase construction volume.

Each member of the Williams Homes’ team is firmly dedicated to the fulfillment of his or her customers. The priceless value of building homes for generations and its lasting implication provides a sense of pride that drives Williams Homes to build not only quality residences, but also celebrated communities…for a lifetime.

With the company’s first successful community in the region now selling, Williams Homes is fast establishing itself as the area’s new premier home-builder. Located in Santa Maria, Harvest Glen offers one- and two-story single family homes ranging from 1,623 to 2,639 approximate square feet, with three to five bedrooms, and filled with impressive price-included amenities. The decorated model homes are open daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and pricing begins from the $300,000s.

Also located in Santa Maria, Williams Homes will introduce Parkland Cottages late this year. A gated community of 21 single-story homes, Parkland Cottages will offer a mature lifestyle with two single-story floorplans. In Lompoc’s Vandenberg Village, Falcon Heights will also debut late this year offering homebuyers panoramic view homes on nearly one-half acre lots. The single-story designs will range from 2,779 to 3,494 approximate square feet.

Williams Homes’ Central Coast division is located at 940 West Anthony Place in Santa Maria. For additional information,

What is it that motivated you to choose the financial industry as your profession? For as long as I can remember I’ve had the passion to help others, so I earned my Bach-elors of Science Degree in Social Sciences and planned on going into Social Work or Teaching. Growing up at my parents’ financial firm and working part-time for the firm throughout Col-lege brought me closer to the realization that working in the financial industry is where I can have the most impact to help others with my education and God-given talents. -Christie

What was the hardest lesson you had to learn about the investment industry? Having been affiliated with four different bro-ker dealers it seems the story was always the same. All the products were very oriented to the profit of the Broker/Dealer. Even when I affili-ated with a B/D using “Modern Portfolio Theory” it seemed to be a marketing gimmick. The underlying fund managers were still gambling and speculating with the investor’s money. As an example, I would see a Small Cap U.S. Equity manager buying the latest large cap fund that would increase the fund yield. Because of this experience I became soured on MPT without realizing the true benefits. What really helps in-vestors in the long run is to find a money man-ager that is truly implementing Modern Portfolio Theory and sticking with it for 15, 20, 30 years. Chasing the hottest fund of the day can have a negative effect long-term in the results of the portfolio. -Trent

What are the biggest mistakes you see in-vestors make when it comes to their invest-ments? Unfortunately, I see most investors make the 3 biggest mistakes usually due to emotional feel-

ings rather than facts or empirical evidence. The 3 biggest mistakes are getting out of the market (Market Timing), picking single stocks (Stock Picking), and choosing a fund based on how it performed in the past (Track-Record Investing). -Christie

What is the most important thing for inves-tors to know about the investing process? The word “process” is key here. It is a pro-cess of showing up, being ready to learn, and staying disciplined in reaching the individual’s personal investment goals. -Christie

Does your approach to investing work for everyone? Our approach works for everyone who is coachable, willing to learn, and truly wants to be able to sleep at night, knowing they are doing the right thing with their investments. -Christie

How do you coach investors to stay disci-plined with their investment strategy? By going through ongoing coaching ourselves, we have tools to reach out to our clients and try to help them carve out a little time in their busy lives to come to coaching workshops. Taking 1-2 hours a month to invest in themselves and their future is the best plan of action to help investors receive the knowledge they need to stay disciplined in their investment strategy. -Christie

What is different about the investment in-dustry now from when you started? The proliferation of online trading firms has changed the way investors receive and act on information. These lower cost trading platforms can give investors an exaggerated sense of

control over the outcome of their trades. The vast amount of online data available leads investors to become overconfident in their ability to pick stocks and other securities. The billions of pieces of financial data provides the online trader with an illusion of knowledge. Stock picking in this environment is still a form of speculating and gambling with your money. -Trent

What kind of people do you work with? I work with people that are motivated to achieve their financial goals and are willing to let me help them. Not everyone is coachable and willing to do the work of understanding their investment strategy in order to get the results they want. -Trent

What is the first step to getting started in this process? The first step is to complete an inventory of your current investment situation. This includes analyzing what you have done in the past: what has worked, what hasn’t worked and determin-ing the results you want to achieve. Successful investors use the right tools, strategies and knowledge. I look forward to helping investors develop a specific plan (and stay on it) to ac-cumulate the long-term wealth for their well-being and investing peace of mind. -Trent

I moved to the Valley in 1980 and went to high school here. I moved to Santa Barbara and married my wonderful husband, Bruce Stapp, in 1990. We moved back to the Valley in 1999 to raise our three children. All three of our children are in college now and I needed a new adventure. Antiques have been in my family for as long as I can remember. My Mom, Dee Anderson, has always been a collector and had spaces in antique malls over the years. My Uncle Johnny and Aunt Takako previously owned Vineyard Antiques in Paso Robles. I have always loved to spend hours in a good antique store. I had two spaces in Old Orcutt, one in Vintage Veranda and one in Deja Vu, and I loved getting back into the business. I didn’t love the drive. After some long discussions with my husband, we decided Solvang needed an Antique and Vintage Mall. I started the search for a location. It was actually my son, Sawyer, who found the location and pointed it out to me. It has worked out perfectly. My family has been so supportive. My daughters, Haylee

and Delanee, come in and help at the store all of the time. Even my son, Sawyer, comes and helps with customers, but most of the time I keep him busy behind the scenes.. My husband, Bruce, has been wonderful, and I could not have done this without him. He is my best friend, hardest worker and most loyal advocate.

We opened on May 23rd and every day is an adventure. There are 26 dealers and over 4000 square feet. The variety of items is amazing and there is something for everyone. Each dealer is responsible for merchandising their own space. They all do such a great job and make the store beautiful. I am so proud. There are new things arriving in the store daily. About half of the deal-

ers live locally, but we have others coming from Lompoc, Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, Nipomo and Arroyo Grande. We are all working hard to get our name out to the com-munity. We belong to the Third Wednesday event in Solvang. We are also having a Flea Market coming up on a Saturday in August (watch for details). Please check us out on Facebook at APieceofthePastSolvang. We hope to see you all in the store soon.

Smith Electric Service was founded in 1980 by lifelong Santa Maria residents the Brannon Family. Since the beginning, the business has always been a family affair. Ron and Frances Brannon would bid and schedule the work, while their two sons Mike and Larry would perform the work. A lot has changed since those early days. Starting out as a small electrical service and construction company, Smith Electric Service has grown over the last 34 years to become one of the largest and highly respected Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC contractors in the tri-county area. One thing that hasn’t changed is Smith’s dedication to their customers. Smith has built their business around three core values:

• Safety Of Our Employees And Customers: Smith values the safety of our employees and customers above all. This is why all of their employees have completed numerous hours of safety training. Smith has a full time safety of cer on staff responsible for ongoing training and certi cation. Additionally, all of Smith employees perform weekly safety tailgate meetings, where each week a different safety topic is discussed. Smith is a fully insured and bonded company.

• Quality Work At A Fair Price: Smith knows that when hiring a contractor, the customer expects professional service at a reasonable price. Our employees

share this same value. Our electricians, plumbers and HVAC technicians have all gone through 4 year apprenticeship programs and our electricians are all California State Certi ed. We use the latest tools and technologies available in the industry and only the highest quality materials. Our service department will not overcharge you or charge you for work that is not necessary.

• Improving the Community: Smith values the relationship with the communities in which we work. Our employees and customers live in these communities. Smith has supported local schools, service organizations, sport teams, the food bank, the Santa Maria Valley YMCA, and the Vocational Training Center.

Chances are that you have seen Smith’s work and not even know. We have built schools from Paso Robles to Ventura. Played major roles in the construction of the new Marian Hospital Expansion and the new Cottage Hospital Expansion. Worked at Cuesta and Allan Hancock Colleges as well as UCSB and Cal Poly campuses. You see our trucks, we live in your communities, we ask that you give us the opportunity to see the quality that countless others have seen and call us today for you electrical, plumbing, and HVAC needs.

Mark Steller began his career with Longs Drug Stores when he was only seven-teen. For the last nine years operated the Old Town Market together, but now each of them owns and manages their own piece of Old Orcutt History; Old Town Market and Déjà vu Antiques.

Old Town Market is a sixty-six year old grocery store and the very first of the Scolari’s Grocery Store chain. It specializes in fine local wines, wine and craft beer tasting events, local produce, a deli, hand scooped Dreyer’s ice cream, local souvenirs, a bill pay center and everything else you would expect in a grocery store. Says Mark, “Though we are a full-service grocery store, our specialty is really lo-cal wine. We stock the largest selection of local wines on the Central Coast and I am always happy to suggest wines for every taste and budget.”

Wendy originally decorated Old Town Market with old mercantile type antiques, such as old scales and advertising signs. Shoppers immediately wanted to purchase these “not for sale” items. After hearing the same request dozens of times, the two of them started marking these goods for sale and hosted outdoor antique sales on certain weekends. This was the true beginning for Déjà Vu Antiques.

Wendy tried to convince Mark into moving her antiques into a bigger building for years but they couldn’t find a good location. When the 107 year old Loading Dock an original oil field warehouse for the Union Oil Company, became available for lease, Mark and Wendy jumped at the opportunity.

Wendy asked more than thirty professional antique dealers to join her and Déjà Vu Antique Mall was born. Wendy stated “My vision for this store was for every vender to think of their section as though it was their own individual shop.” Dealers also use the deck to work on their repurposing creations. The deck offers excellent views of the Orcutt foothills and wine tasting is in the works. Wendy holds outdoor boutiques seven times a year with over forty outdoor gift and antique vendors. The two largest events of the year take place in July and September complimenting two large car shows held in Old Town Orcutt. You can check their Facebook Page,www.facebook.com/loadingdockantiques for a current schedule.

So when you’re travelling through Old Orcutt, our advice is to pick up an award winning sandwich at Old Town Market and then enjoy your picnic lunch with a good friend at Déjà vu Antiques at the Loading Dock. Oh, and while at the market be sure to ask Mark what local wine he suggests you to take home with you.
