Lovell fell to Pinedale 49-30 Thursday, eliminat- ed Big Piney 46-34 Friday and fell to host Worland 56-49 Saturday in a win- or-go-home game. Turnovers and cold shooting plagued the Bull- dogs early in game one, al- lowing Pinedale – the top seed out of the southwest – to lead 17-2 at the end of the first quarter, and the Wranglers extended the lead to 22-2 early in the second before the Bulldogs scored again. Pinedale out- scored Lovell 15-7 in the second quarter to lead 32-9 at halftime. Lovell came to play in the third quarter and out- scored Pinedale 14-5 as Zeke Newman drained a pair of three-point- ers en route to 8 points as the Bulldogs trimmed the Wrangler lead to 14 points, 37-23, at the quarter break. Pinedale outscored Lovell 12-7 in the fourth for the 49-30 win. “We dug ourselves a huge hole in the first half and in the third quar- ter made a valiant effort to come back but couldn’t sustain it in the fourth,” coach Craig Lundberg said. “It was pretty brutal in the first half. It seemed like we kept turning the ball over in the half court, which led to easy buckets (for Pinedale). Their shooter (Daniel Gosar) was on, even with a hand in his face. That knocked the wind out of our sails real quick, like poof. “The kids knew what to expect, but they were able to get deflections, which led to us turning it over. We were dead even in turn- overs, but they made ours count and we didn’t score off of their turnovers like we should have. I think they were still upset about los- ing to us in Lovell, and they came out pretty juiced up.” Lundberg said the Bull- dogs fought back to with- in 12 points in the fourth quarter before Pinedale pulled away. “It shows how games can be won or lost in three- to four-minute spurts…It was disappointing for the boys. I know they wanted to do better than that,” the coach said. Newman led the Bull- dogs with 11 points, and Brenden Lundberg had a solid outing with 7 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists. Mat Sav- age also snared five boards. STAYING ALIVE The Bulldogs were solid from start to finish in a 46- 34 win over Big Piney Fri- day. They shot a bit better than on Thursday, 31 per- cent, knocked down six treys, got to the foul line 14 times and had fewer turn- overs with 17. Lundberg said it was a solid bounce-back game for the team. “These kids have been this way all year,” he said. “It’s a good thing and a bad thing. They lose their mem- ory really quick. They don’t dwell on losses, but some- times they don’t remember how good they were.” Six players score for the Bulldogs, led by Bren- den Lundberg with 11. “Any time we can have balanced scoring, it helps out everyone,” the coach said. “Spreading it around makes the game easi- er. Offensively, being able to knock down shots was huge for us, and in the third quarter we came out and locked them up defensively. That was very exciting for me as a coach.” The Bulldogs came out on fire and quickly built an 8-0 lead as Savage kicked to Lundberg for a three-pointer, Jacob Grant stuffed a Puncher, which led to a Newman trey, and Hunter Harris scored on a reverse layup. Big Piney battled back as Lovell led 10-9 after the first quarter. Two treys by Lundberg, a power drive by Jacob Grant, a jumper by Lundberg and a follow bucket by Savage propelled Lovell to a 12-9 advantage in the second quarter as the Bulldogs led 22-18 at halftime. “The first time we played them (a 50-31 loss in Lovell) we were not able to knock down any shots,” Coach Lund- berg said. “When Brenden came out and drilled three three-pointers, that kind of shocked them. Same with CJ in the third. He was kind of able to knock the wind out of their sails.” Lovell outscored Big Piney 10-2 in the third quarter to lead 32-20, and Pickett closed the quarter with back-to-back treys. The Bulldogs led by as many as 14 points in the fourth before winning by 12. Af- ter not getting to the foul line once in the first three quarters, Lovell hit just enough free throws – eight of 14 – in the fourth quarter to hold the lead. Grant also hit a pair of buckets. “Jacob did a nice job for us. He hit some big shots for us in the fourth quarter,” Lundberg said. “The older and younger kids stepped up at different times for us this weekend.” Lundberg finished with 11 points for the Bulldogs, Pickett 9 and Grant 8. SEASON-ENDER The Bulldogs took on the hometown Worland Warriors in a bid to earn a trip to the state tourna- ment Saturday afternoon and hung with the Warriors before falling 56-49. “All we wanted was an opportunity,” Lundberg said. “The kids made strides all year, and we felt if we could put together four quarters we could punch out ticket and make that trip. A few mistakes down the stretch overshadowed how well we played to that point.” The Bulldogs went toe to toe with the Warriors in the first quarter, match- ing Worland 13-13 as New- man scored 4 and Pick- ett 3. Treys by Savage and Newman and two buck- ets by Lundberg fueled an 11-point second for the Bulldogs, but Worland hit four three-pointers in a 16-point quarter to lead 29- 24 at halftime. “Almost every basket in the second quarter was a trey from the corner for Worland,” Lundberg said. “They stretched our de- fense. They hadn’t shot the ball that well from distance in a while. We were trying to take away their big guy (Andrew Edholm) in the middle.” Worland edged Lovell 10-7 in the third to lead 39- 31, and the Bulldogs contin- ued to battle in the fourth, outscoring Worland 18-17, but they couldn’t make up the deficit. “We switched some things up in the fourth quarter, going to a full- court man-to-man. They turned the ball over quite a bit, and we were able to capitalize but couldn’t quite get over the prover- bial hump,” Lundberg said. “We had some pretty easy shots right around the rim we should have been able to make, and they rolled right out. “Jacob was in foul trou- ble, but Brenden played very aggressive offensively and defensively. He and Mat and Zeke really scrapped to get us back into it.” In the end, the War- riors knew they had been in a game against the bat- tling Bulldogs. “At the final buzzer I was completely at peace with the way this team im- proved and progressed, and because of how our kids battled, not just in this game but this sea- son,” Lundberg said. “Each kid left everything out on the floor. Whether playing two minutes or 22 minutes, each kid gave it his all. “It was one of the best years we’ve had in how ev- ery single kid bought in and improved every week. The kids can use that formula to be successful.” Lundberg finished with 13 points, Savage 11 and Pickett and Newman 8 apiece. Lundberg, Savage and Pickett snagged five rebounds each, and Lund- berg led the team with four steals and three assists. The game was the final contest for seniors Jordan Vasquez, Lundberg, Hunter Steenbakkers, Savage and Grant. The Bulldogs fin- ished the season 9-15. Other Bulldog wres- tlers were sophomore Cardon Mickelson at 120 pounds and sophomore Myzek McArthur at 160 pounds. North Big Horn placed sixth with 64 points, four points behind Top of the Rock wrestling club and six points ahead of High Plains Thunder. Other Bulldog wres- tlers who competed in the Greco tournament were Marchant at 120 pounds, Cardon Mickelson at 120 pounds and McArthur at 160 pounds. The team placed fourth with 111 points, 75 points be- hind Young Guns wrestling club and 21 points ahead of Windy City Wrestlers. “They had a lot of matches on Saturday,” coach Nick DeWitt said. “All of them were against quality opponents. Many of the competitors that were there were state placers in Class 2A-4A. “I enjoy this tourna- ment. It’s an opportunity for the wrestlers to com- pete with nothing on the line. It gave them addi- tional mat time and expe- rience and different styles. I believe that freestyle and Greco provide essential fundamentals and help us improve to be all-around wrestlers.” DeWitt said Heck- er, Trainor and Marchant qualified to join the Team Wyoming in its annu- al trip to Iowa. Hecker and Trainor qualified to wres- tle with Team Wyoming in Fargo, N.D.

The Lovell Bulldogs fell one win short of qualifying for the state tournament over the weekend in Wor-land, going 1-2 at the 3A West Regional.

Lovell fell to Pinedale 49-30 Thursday, eliminat-ed Big Piney 46-34 Friday and fell to host Worland 56-49 Saturday in a win-or-go-home game.

Turnovers and cold shooting plagued the Bull-dogs early in game one, al-lowing Pinedale – the top seed out of the southwest – to lead 17-2 at the end of the first quarter, and the Wranglers extended the lead to 22-2 early in the second before the Bulldogs scored again. Pinedale out-scored Lovell 15-7 in the second quarter to lead 32-9 at halftime.

Lovell came to play in the third quarter and out-scored Pinedale 14-5 as Zeke Newman drained a pair of three-point-ers en route to 8 points as the Bulldogs trimmed the Wrangler lead to 14 points, 37-23, at the quarter break. Pinedale outscored Lovell 12-7 in the fourth for the 49-30 win.

“We dug ourselves a huge hole in the first half and in the third quar-ter made a valiant effort to come back but couldn’t sustain it in the fourth,” coach Craig Lundberg said. “It was pretty brutal in the first half. Whether playing two minutes or 22 minutes, each kid gave it his all.

“It was one of the best years we’ve had in how ev-ery single kid bought in and improved every week. The kids can use that formula to be successful.”

Lundberg finished with 13 points, Savage 11 and Pickett and Newman 8 apiece. Lundberg, Savage and Pickett snagged five rebounds each, and Lund-berg led the team with four steals and three assists.

there were state placers in Class 2A-4A.

“I enjoy this tourna-ment. It’s an opportunity for the wrestlers to com-pete with nothing on the line. It gave them addi-tional mat time and expe-rience and different styles. I believe that freestyle and Greco provide essential fundamentals and help us improve to be all-around wrestlers.”

DeWitt said Heck-er, Trainor and Marchant qualified to join the Team Wyoming in its annu-al trip to Iowa. Hecker and Trainor qualified to wres-tle with Team Wyoming in Fargo, N.D.
