For those who are facing new grief this holiday time, maybe a first Christmas without a loved one, maybe someone with an awareness of a new or more painful loss, this is a time of possible sadness or depression. You won’t have to work up a laugh or bright comment for this meeting: it will be a time for quiet, candle-lit reflection, and an honest confrontation of those parts of life that are broken, still waiting for God’s final Advent. “We see not yet all things put under his feet, but we see Jesus…” We will look at those things, and look at Jesus. This will be open to the community; maybe the Holy Spirit will bring a friend to mind to bring with you. Secondly, we will be holding our traditional Chr istmas Eve services Dec 24th at the Mammoth Chapel. The first service will be at 6pm with our Children's Choir and childcare provid-ed downstairs. The second service will be at 8pm with our Adult Choir. Last but certainly not least, we will be having a Christmas Day service at Gardiner Community Church at 10:15am with coffee and cookies after-wards in the basement. The Gardiner Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors will meet on Thursday, December 15th at 12:00 noon, upstairs at the Visitor Center. Public Welcome.

Reminder – Explosives and Exploding Targets Prohibited on National Forest System lands

Bozeman, MT – Custer Gallatin Forest managers remind people visiting their national forest that explosives and exploding targets are prohibited on all National Forest System lands within Region 1. The purpose of this restriction is to enhance public safety and protect natural resources and property. The widening use of explod-ing targets on public land has led to serious injuries, wildfires, destruction of property and significant loss and/or damage to natural resources. Recently, an individual near Gardiner, Montana was cited for use of an exploding target. Violators receive fines of $300.00 and can be held civilly liable for damages.

Montana Facts and Trivia

Buffalo in the wild can still be viewed at the National Bison Range in Moiese, south of Flathead Lake and west of the Mission Mountains. Wild bison also wander the streets of Gardiner and shop at the local establishments.

Montana's first territorial capital, Bannack, has been preserved as a ghost town state park along once gold-laden Grasshopper Creek.

The Old West comes to life through the brush and sculpture of famed western artist Charlie Russell at the Charles M. Russell Museum Complex in Great Falls. The museum contains the world's largest collection of Russell's work, his original log-cabin studio and his Great Falls home.

The Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman gained fame through the work of its chief paleontologist, Jack Horner. Horner was the prototype for the character Dr. Alan Grant in the best selling novel/movie, "Jurassic Park."

Montana's rivers and streams provide water for three oceans and three of the North American continent's major river basins.

Just south of Billings, Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and his troops made their last stand. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument features the Plains Indians and United States military involved in the historic battle.

Initial Forest Plan Revision Publications for Public Review Draft Assessment of Existing Conditions & Preliminary Need to Change Reports Available for Review. Bozeman, MT – The initial phase of Forest Plan Revision, an overarching document that guides the Custer Gallatin National Forest for the upcoming 15 or more years, is coming to a close. The draft Assessment of Existing Conditions and the draft Preliminary Need to Change publications are available for public review as this initial phase wraps up. The assessment is a snapshot in time of the conditions on the ground across the Custer Gallatin National Forest and serves as a starting place for the rest of the plan revision. A shorter docu-ment, the Preliminary Need to Change covers initial ideas of needed management plan changes resulting from combining two Forest plans, filling gaps in plan direction, implementing the Forest Service planning require-ments and reflecting new laws, new information, science and adaptive management. It is expected other need to change items will arise, but not all items must be identified now. The Custer Gallatin National Forest will come out of Forest Plan Revision with one unified Forest Plan across the entire forest. “Given over 20 public meetings, small group conversations, hundreds of questionnaires and thousands of emails we heard what is important to people across the Custer Gallatin National Forest,” said Virginia Kelly, Forest Plan Revision Team Leader. “Having existing conditions information and the public interest to date will help us start developing the plan in 2017, with more public involvement opportunities as each phase progresses. The draft Assessment Report of Existing Conditions and the draft Preliminary Need to Change documents are available for download online at: www.fs.usda.gov/custergallatin, by clicking on Forest Plan Revision (upper right-hand corner quicklink), public involvement and assessment links. Hardcopy versions are also available at district offices, 12 com-munity libraries, Cooke City chamber desk and limited numbers are available upon request by calling 406-587-6735. Topic specific specialist reports are available on-line. Libraries or chambers include: Bozeman Public Library, West Yellowstone Public Library, Livingston Public Library, Gardiner Commu-nity Library, Carnegie Public Library in Big Timber, Red Lodge Carnegie Library, Billings Public Library, Bicentennial Library of Colstrip, Ekalaka Public Library, Harding County Library in Buffalo SD, Big Sky Community Library, Stillwater County Library in Columbus, Cooke City Chamber Desk. Feedback on the draft Assessment of Existing Condi-tions and Need to Change documents is encouraged and preferred online thru January 6, 2017 by utilizing our Comment Analysis Response Application, an electronic commenting tool. Feedback is most useful when it includes new information, information that has a direct relation to the Assessment of Existing Condi-tions or Need to Change and includes supporting reasons. Information not directly related to the Assessment or Need for Change will be considered in future planning phases. A Reviewer’s Guide to Review and Feedback is available online to help guide this process. Additional methods include emailing [email protected] or by mail or hand delivery at Forest Service: Attn: Forest Plan Revision, Custer Gallatin National Forest, 10 E Babcock, P.O. Box 130, Bozeman, MT 59771. Please address subject line as Assessment of Existing Conditions/Need to Change Feedback. All submissions are part of public record. For general information or to subscribe to the mailing list visit: www.fs.usda.gov/custergallatin.
