Picnic fun!Local 1488 members and their families had a

blast at our local’s annual picnic Aug. 20 at Lin-coln Park in West Seattle. About 250 turned out.

The event is growing from the 75 who showed uplast year.

On Aug. 4-6, I attended the WashingtonState Labor Council Convention along withLocal 1488 members John Miller (UW Bothell),and Jesse Dailey (Harborview), at Seatac.

The theme for this year’s convention was

“We Are One.”Delegates and alternates voted on several

resolutions concerning labor issues.A few examples are:

• Resolution #1, “SUPPORTING

TRANSPORTATION FOR WASHINGTONCAMPAIGN” -- Submitted by The Martin LutherKing Jr. County Labor Council.

• Resolution #9, “RESTORE COLLECTIVEBARGAINING RIGHTS” -- Submitted byAFSCME Council 28. (This is in response tolegislation stripping information technology

workers of collective bargaining rights in aconsolidation of several state agencies.)

• Resolution #20, “OPPOSITION TO TIMEYMAN’S ATTACK ON TOLLS AND SOUNDTRANSIT INITIATIVE 1125” -- Submitted by theWashington State Building & Construction TradesCouncil, AFL-CIO.

• and Resolution #35, “TO PREVENT

WISCONSIN-LIKE ATTACKS ON COLLECTIVEBARGAINING RIGHTS IN WASHINGTON”

The composition of the UW-Harborview Bar-

gaining Team is spelled out in your Local 1488Constitution (Article IX – CONTRACT NEGO-

TIATING TEAM NOMINATIONS AND ELEC-TIONS):

Section 2. The election shall be for seventeen(17) negotiating team members and shall be

determined accordingly:

a. Nominations and the number ofrepresentatives shall be determined by six

(6) geographical locations and bargainingunits as follows:

two (2) at-large (plus:)

a. PSO’s bargaining unit (HMC),one (1)

2. University Medical Center (UWMC),two (2) at-large

3. Bothell Campus, one (1) at-large4. Tacoma Campus, one (1) at-large

5. PAC Lab, Friday Harbor andConsolidated Laundry as a coalition,

one (1) at-large6. University of Washington (UW) main

campus, two (2) at-large (plus:)

i. Trades bargaining unit (UW),two (2)

ii. Library bargaining unit (UW),two (2)

iii. Campus-wide bargaining unit/ Custodian (UW), two (2)

c. The president of Local 1488 will be anautomatic seat and count as one (1).The president’s unit afliation shall notbe included as geographical nor in a

bargaining unit as stated in Article IX,Section 2a of this constitution and is anat-large position.

For UW Police Management, the constitu-tion (Article IX, Section 3) species that that bargaining team will have no less than two bar-gaining unit members.

Working for the University of Washington weexpect to get paid better than minimum wage.We usually do. Our pay is higher, plus we getsome benets; vacation time, health insurance,retirement. But at some of our jobs the universityonly pays minimum wage - safety.

The Washington State Department of Laborand Industries (L&I) writes the safety regulations.That’s the minimum wage of safety. The UW has tofollow them. It’s not optional for them. It’s the law.But they don’t have to do anything else.

Work with power tools in noisy fan rooms? If it’s not above L&I’s 85-decibel regulation the UW

Working for Minimum Wage won’t test your hearing - Minimum Wage.Custodians who work with irritating stripper

and cleaners need to get a doctor’s note and lea disability accommodation or the UW won’t getthem a respirator mask. They aren’t required to -Minimum Wage.

Got a job where you have to lift heavy stuff alday, or maybe lots of repetitive motion? Back hurWrist hurt? Shoulder hurt? Fill out an incidentreport or go to the doctor. Just don’t expect theUW to do anything about it. It’s not required -Minimum Wage.

Got a new task in your job? Think your boss igoing to check it out to see if it’s dangerous; inspthe workplace? You’re kidding right? It’s notrequired - Minimum Wage.

They will put a guard on a machine and giveyou the MSDS, but make your job safe? It’s notrequired. Welcome to your minimum wage job .
