How a High Protein Breakfast Can Help with Fat Loss

Here’s a great reason to eat a high protein breakfast: you may eat fewer calories for the rest of the day and lose body fat, too.

While most people do manage to eat something in the morning, nearly half of Australians and New Zealanders routinely skip breakfast.* Many say they simply don’t have time to eat breakfast in the morning. But even for those who do eat breakfast, it’s hardly protein-packed. The top three breakfast foods in Australia are oats, coffee, and toast.

Even though breakfast is often

called “the most important

meal of the day” – and a

healthy habit that has been

linked to a reduced risk of

weight gain – much of the

benefit depends on the

nutrients in your meal.

The Benefits of a Protein BreakfastIn a recent study conducted at the University of Missouri1, researchers recruited 28 overweight students who routinely skipped breakfast at least five days a week. The aim of the study was to compare the effects of two different 350 calorie breakfasts on hunger, food intake and body weight over a period of twelve weeks. The two breakfasts consisted of a “standard” protein meal with 13 grams of protein vs. a high protein breakfast with 35 grams of protein.

Students were randomly divided into two groups and were provided a daily breakfast meal. One group got a standard protein breakfast, and another group received a high protein breakfast. A third group of breakfast-skippers served as a control: they were asked to simply continue skipping breakfast as they usually did.

Those in the high protein group had more stable blood sugar levels throughout the day, and the students reported that the breakfast helped them to feel fuller during the day as well. In fact, those who ate the high protein breakfast every morning ended up eating less food over the course of the day. This was about 400 calories less than their usual intake, which led to a loss of body fat.

Those who ate the lower protein breakfast, or skipped the meal altogether, gained body fat over the 12 weeks.

This is worth noting, since many breakfast-skippers defend their habit in the belief it will save them calories and lead to weight loss.

The study was small and only included young adults, so it’s yet to be seen if the same effects would be seen in a larger group of people. The study does, however, provide additional evidence that protein helps with appetite control. Also, eating a relatively high protein breakfast may help to set the stage for more calorie-controlled choices for the rest of the day.

The key to eating 35 grams of protein within a 350 calorie limit is to choose high-quality proteins. These include eggs and egg whites, nonfat and low-fat dairy products (milk, cottage cheese, Greek yoghurt) and lean meats, as well as protein powders that can be added to shakes or stirred into scrambled eggs for a protein boost. Or, a meal replacement shake that provides the recommended breakfast intake of nutrients and calories, like our Formula 1 Shake Mix.

‘Tis the season to stay in shape! With the approaching festive season, it’s easy to let fitness fall to the bottom of your to-do list. Let me help you stay in shape by following my best holiday fitness tips!

# 1: Schedule it all in advanceRather than leaving your schedule up to chance, be proactive and set aside dedicated time to hit the gym. If you’re travelling, make sure your travel days are pre-planned rest days, and consider signing up for local classes at your destination. When something is pre-planned, it’s much harder to just forget about it. Chances are, if you don’t have an activity pre-planned, you won’t do one at all!

#2: Get a training partnerEven if you love to work out solo, consider buddying up over the next few weeks. The holiday season is the perfect time to find a training partner. Chances are that you’re not the only one at work or at home who’ll benefit from some friendly accountability over the coming few weeks. Spending time at the beach? Take a run along the sand before soaking up some sun!

#3: Cut down your workout timeI understand that the holiday season is a busy time, so instead of cutting out your workout altogether, consider decreasing your time commitment while increasing your intensity level. At the end of your session, you may feel a little more tired than usual, but you will save time. Try a 20 minute jog instead of your normal 40 minute walk.

#4: Do a pre-meal workoutThe mental side of weight management is a great strategy to use over the holidays. I believe that if you strive to do a workout prior to going to a party, there’s a good chance you will watch what you eat at the buffet table. After a workout, the desire to eat foods that are high in calories and bad for you tends to diminish. However, if you go to a party with the attitude of ‘I will eat what I want because I will work out later,’ you must keep in mind...

#5: Keep it simpleIf you can’t find the motivation to get into the gym or attend a fitness class during the holidays, use walking as your go-to activity. Find time at work to get in some walking minutes, power walk on your shopping trips and do some exercises before bed such as push-ups, squats and crunches to keep your body as conditioned as possible. When you’re considering having some indulgent foods, be aware of the portion size that you’re consuming. Try to balance your other meals during the day to accommodate your splurge.

How to Stay Fit During the Holidays

you can’t out train a high-calorie diet.

Many people think that the best way to lose weight is to work out, then not eat afterwards, but nothing could be further from the truth. Sure, you need to create a calorie deficit and burn more than you consume, but luckily, your body is much more complex and it’s possible to lose as you gain. Here’s how.

Muscle is more efficient at burning calories than fat. When you build muscle, you can actually increase your metabolism. So, by increasing your muscle mass, you can burn more calories per day, which will help you get closer to your body composition goals. There is a term that you need to become familiar with if you want to maximise your training and body composition results – basal metabolic rate (BMR). It is used to describe the number of calories your body needs to burn each day to survive at rest. This number is important because it’s part of the equation that is used to determine how many calories you should eat each day to support your bodily functions and daily activities. When you exercise and focus on building muscle, this increased muscle mass will increase your BMR, which, in short, means that your body will be burning more calories at rest. It also means that your body will need more calories each day in order to maintain your weight. Having an increased BMR due to having good body composition is a great strategy for making weight loss feel easier.

You’ve probably heard the term “lean muscle” and how important it is, but what exactly is it? Gaining lean muscle is basically building muscle without adding fat, which, for most fit goals, is the ideal way to gain muscle. By consuming 20 to 40 grams of high-quality protein, combined with some carbohydrates post workout, you will begin to build lean muscle.

Aside from burning extra calories, there are other advantages to building muscle. Strength training can result in a greater proportion of lean vs. fat tissue. Also, muscle takes up less space in your body per kilo than fat.

Building muscle and seeing its effects on your body and how you feel can create a positive cycle. When you make a conscious decision to be committed and disciplined with your exercise plan, you may find your good habits and dedication transfer into other areas of your life. As you become more active in the gym, you may become more aware of what your body needs in order to feel its best. This increased awareness in the gym often transfers to developing good nutritional habits in the kitchen. Once you experience it for yourself, your weight loss journey may begin to look a lot brighter, and your goals a lot closer.

Fact 1: Plant Estrogens Are Not the Same as Natural EstrogenMany myths and misconceptions concerning soy foods stem from the fact that soy contains natural plant compounds called isoflavones. Isoflavones are “phytoestrogens,” which are also known as dietary estrogens.

Isoflavones have a chemical structure that’s similar, but not identical to natural estrogen, the hormone produced by your body. Therefore, plant-derived phytoestrogens in soy do not exert the same effects as the estrogen that the body produces. When some people hear “soy contains phytoestrogens,” they assume that consuming soy will expose their body to too much estrogen, but that is not the case.

Soy Facts Everyone Should KnowSoy foods have long been recognised as good sources of protein, and in some parts of the world, soy has been part of the diet for thousands for years. In fact, there is a growing body of research to support the many health benefits of soy. And yet, there is still some confusion about this versatile food source.

Fact 2: Soy Isoflavones Do Not Increase Breast Cancer RiskSome people shun soy foods in the mistaken belief that these plant estrogens will increase their body’s exposure to estrogen, and increase their risk for breast cancer.

It turns out, that the opposite may be true. In the case of breast cancer, concerns about soy increasing natural estrogen levels are unfounded. In fact, the incidence of breast cancer is lower in countries where soy is consumed regularly.

In Asian epidemiologic studies, a higher consumption of soy in early life is associated with a 25 to 60 percent reduction in breast cancer risk. Similarly, the North American Menopause Society has concluded that soy-based isoflavones do not increase the risk of breast or endometrial cancer.

Fact 3: Soy Does Not Have Feminising Effects on MalesThis myth has caused some men to avoid soy products completely. While it certainly makes headlines, this has been reported in only one study, which documented the “feminising” effects in a 60-year old man who drank nearly three litres of soy milk daily.

It was estimated that the subject was taking nine times (360mg) the amount of isoflavones than typically consumed by older Japanese men, whose soy intake is higher than the worldwide average. The subject’s high soy intake was also part of an unbalanced and nutrient-deficient diet.

In numerous clinical trials, there has been no report of feminising effects in men who were exposed to as much as 150mg/day of soy isoflavones.

Fact 4: Soy Protein Supports Muscle BuildingWhen people think of muscle-building protein, they usually think of whey protein. Soy protein is effective for promoting muscle growth, too, but the confusion about phytoestrogens has led to the myth that these plant compounds may lower testosterone levels and interfere with muscle development.

This myth is false. According to a meta-analysis of studies related to soy protein and isoflavones, it was concluded that neither soy foods nor isoflavone supplements had any significant effects on testosterone concentrations in men.

Soy is a great source of protein and is also rich in arginine, the amino acid that the body uses to produce nitric oxide. Nitric oxide increases blood flow to the muscles, which helps deliver nutrients and oxygen during your workouts.

Fuel Your Workout with Soy Protein

Fact 5: Soy Is a Healthy, Environmentally-Friendly Alternative to Animal ProteinMoving away from myths, let’s consider the impressive nutritional profile of soy.

Soy is a complete plant protein: it contains all the essential amino acid building blocks used to manufacture all kinds of specialised protein structures our body needs. Soy is also low in saturated fat and naturally cholesterol-free.

Adding soy foods to your diet could boost your intake of vitamins, such as folate and Vitamin K, as well as minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron. You can increase your intake of fibre if you eat whole soybeans – and you can’t get fibre from animal proteins.

Finally, you can also help the planet by consuming more plant-based protein like soy. When compared to the environmental impact of raising farm animals, soy production uses less water and land, and produces fewer greenhouse gases.

• Soy protein is rich in genistein and arginine

• Genistein and arginine support nitric oxide production and blood flow to the muscles

• Supports growth and repair of muscle tissue

The Herbalife Nutrition Foundation is a global not-for-profit foundation dedicated to improving the lives of children around the world by helping organisations provide healthy nutrition to children at risk. The Herbalife Nutrition Foundation provides financial grants and volunteer support from Herbalife Nutrition Independent Members and Herbalife Nutrition Corporate staff.

Herbalife Nutrition Independent Members have been lending a hand at Life Education Trust New Zealand’s fundraising activities in October and November. Members pitched in at the sausage sizzle and assisted with activities at ‘Duck Race’ events in Auckland and Christchurch.

All fundraising efforts support Life Education Trust’s school workshops to educate and empower students to make healthy choices and live full lives.

Our South Australian Casa Partner, Power Community Limited, recently held trials for students to gain entry to the 2020 Aboriginal AFL Academy (AAA). The AAA program is dedicated to the educational success of school-aged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander footballers. Herbalife Nutrition Members and staff cheered on students as they completed their exercises, and provided a hydration station to follow. Herbalife Nutrition supports the nutrition education component of this program, which enhances student’s knowledge of health and nutrition.

It was an incredible experience being part of such a large, philanthropic event to raise money and awareness for the Herbalife Nutrition Foundation.

We visited Sunshine Butterflies near Noosa in September, which is a wonderful facility. It was great seeing how much they improve the lives of people with disabilities. Giving back made us feel better as well, knowing we help raise funds that go directly toward such a worthy cause. I know all our Casas do great work, but experiencing firsthand how we contribute to positively impact these communities just made it so real, seeing it all in action.

The ride process before, during, and after is such a raw, exhilarating feeling with so much personal growth and development. Through the journey, we made friends that become family.

When you go to the different Casas and see what the fundraising does and how grateful every member of each Casa community is, it makes every single kilometre we spin through, every incline and peak we reach. I am grateful that I have this opportunity to give back worthwhile.

Why I’m Riding 840kms from TORQUAY to ADELAIDE

by LYNNET-ANN WALKER Herbalife Nutrition Independent Member

My father, Garry de Brabander, would tell me about the folks who ride a bike 840kms from Torquay to Adelaide, in order to raise money for the Herbalife Nutrition Foundation. He was so excited that they were doing this and supported them in many ways. Initially, I thought they were crazy! I mean, who rides a push bike 840kms? Back then, I knew nothing about cycling.

Not long after my father passed away, my husband Mark and I were in the car with my step mum, Jenny. I mentioned to Jenny that I saw the annual bike ride for the Herbalife Nutrition Foundation was approaching, and maybe Mark and I should do it as our way of supporting the Herbalife Nutrition Foundation, in honour of dad. Jenny was thrilled and immediately shared with everyone that Mark and I were doing the bike ride, despite the fact we didn’t even own a bike, let alone know how to ride one. There was no turning back now.

After a call to Kerrie Bowie (a veteran of the HNF Bike Ride), who recommended a shop for us to get bicycles, we discovered we needed a crew member. Without hesitation, Jenny said “I’m in.”

Our bikes arrived in September, which is when we immediately began learning how to ride. We trained extremely hard, and thank goodness we have the best nutrition, as this supported our ambitious cycling goals.

Lynnet and Mark Walker participate in the HNF bike ride together to raise awareness and funds for nutrition education and wellness.

2020 will be our 3rd Bike Ride for the Herbalife Nutrition Foundation.

I was referred to my coach through a trusted friend of mine, and after trying everything to improve my overall well-being with little to no results, I had nothing to lose. I figured, why not give Herbalife Nutrition a go. I started with inner nutrition, and within three weeks, I noticed changes in my skin. And to my surprise, I lost 8.5kg overall throughout the duration of my program, as an added bonus!

My energy lifted immensely and I started to feel like me again. Over time, I decided to start the outer nutrition SKIN products too. My skin is now so smooth. I often get compliments that my skin is glowing! Make up is now a choice, not a necessity, which I love. Starting Herbalife Nutrition was the best decision I ever made!

I met my coach on Facebook and after a year of getting to know each other, I decided to try Herbalife Nutrition. I was a manager of a chain of cafés, a father of two, had little energy, and was unable to find a routine that allowed me to exercise consistently. I started on the Ultimate Program, incorporating two meal replacement shakes a day and one healthy meal into my new routine whilst drinking plenty of water. I learned how to eat properly again by making healthier choices. With these new habits, I lost 40kg of body fat and added 8kgs of lean muscle, all while feeling much more energised.

This change in lifestyle and nutrition helped me to become the fittest and most energetic version of myself. I feel better in my 40s than I did in my 20s. My family and I incorporate Herbalife Nutrition into both our daily lives, making healthier choices every day. My family and I love the way we feel now after feeding our bodies what it needs every day, thank you to Herbalife Nutrition making it so easy to live a healthy and happy lifestyle.
