MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Students and Staff,

Congratulations and thankyou to everyone for a

highly successful Term 1. There have been a

number of new initiatives and programs that

the school has initiated this year and

indicators are that the student learning

programs will be enhanced as a result.

As I indicated to you last year the school has

received an additional $680,000.00 through

the Federal Government’s National Partnership

(NP). This significant amount of money is to be

used to develop programs that will improve

student learning outcomes. After a very

rigorous evaluation of school based data two of

the areas that were most in need are literacy

and community engagement.

This term we have implemented a very detailed

and intensive three year professional learning

program to improve student literacy skills. All

students from Year 1 – 6 have had their

reading fluency and comprehension assessed

individually using a standard process and we

look forward to reporting their progress over

the year.

The school has also tried to engage more

effectively with parents and caregivers. The

NP funding has allowed us to employ a

Community Liaison Officer (CLO), two days per

week. Mrs Naffa (Maysoun) is at school

Monday and Friday and works with ALL

parents. She has organised parent programs

that run almost every Monday with sessions

being held in English and Arabic.

Last week we held our first parent teacher

conferences for 2012 and it was great to see

so many of you throughout the year. The

teachers have said that they really enjoyed

meeting with parents/caregivers and that

spreading the conferences over the week

meant more time could be spent with you.

Please let us know if you found this more

valuable. Thank you for taking the time to work

with us in educating your children.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Carers, Staff and Students,

Term 4 continues the fine tradition of being a very busy term!

We have begun our evaluation and planning process for 2017. Thank you to those of you

who completed the Tell Them From Me survey earlier this term. This information helps

us to evaluate school programs to ensure they meet the needs of our students and their

families.

Part of the planning process is also considering our class structure for next year. Schools

are allocated teachers based on the number of students in attendance. To help with

planning, please let the school office know if your children will not be returning to

Liverpool Public School in 2017. If you are planning on travelling and may miss the

beginning of the new school year, please make sure you give the school office details of

your travel arrangements and a copy of your flight itinerary.

Our Kindergarten Orientation Program begins soon which is when we will get to meet

the newest members of our Liverpool Public School family. The orientation program

gives your child an opportunity to visit our school and become familiar with some of the

faces and places for next year. Parents and carers also have an opportunity to learn

about school life and ask questions about school. If you have a child that is due to start

school next year, please enrol your child now as they will not be able to participate in

the Kindergarten Orientation Program unless they are enrolled.

Finally, I trust by now that you have seen some of the many changes to our school

environment. Recently we had our first harvest from our school vegetable garden which

was cooked into a grand feast! Our native bush garden was developed by our Aboriginal

This term Liverpool Public School is focussing on the Public Victory. Students will be learning about, and

putting into practice, Habits 5, 6 and 7.

It is wonderful to see and hear students across the school demonstrating the skills and language they have

learned so far this year. Students have learned about the Private Victory and how to put these habits into

practice at home and school.

We would also like to thank all the parents and carers who have jumped on board and are encouraging

their children to be leaders. Don’t forget that these habits are universal – they can be used at home as

well!

Parents and carers can also download The Leader in Me parent guide from our school website

www.liverpool-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/the-leader-in-me

On the next page are some ideas for families to try at home.

ORGANISATIONAL SKILLS Imagine a school morning where everyone knows what to do and is

ready on time. Sound too good to be true? Well, it’s possible!

Organisation is a skill learned over time. By teaching organisation at

home, your child will learn this very important skill. Use the first three

habits as a learning tool for you and your child:

Habit 1: Be Proactive

Habit 1 is about initiative and responsibility. Help your child determine

what he or she will need for the next day. To start, writing a list may be

helpful. Next, have your child gather the non-perishable items and put them in his or her school bag.

Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind

Habit 2 is about visualising how you would like something to turn out before it happens. If a smooth

morning is the goal, brainstorm with your child how that will look and feel like. Your child may actually

have time to do something extra in the morning if he or she is organised and you will all have a happy start

to the day.

Habit 3: Put First Things

Habit 3 means focusing on the task when there's something else you would rather be doing — the hardest

part of all! Help your child learn how to avoid distractions by reminding him or her that, if they stick to it,

all the fun things can come right after—with no guilt or nagging!

Once children know these habits, and how to apply them, they can start tackling more difficult tasks

independently. They will begin to feel self-confident and proud when they're able to complete homework,

chores, and other tasks by themselves. They're also sure to be pleased when they find they have some

extra free time to do what they'd like to do.

Remember, it may take time to teach your child these skills. Sometimes, it will seem simpler just to do it

for them. But remember, your child won't learn how to be independent and successful if you always do it

for them. Using Habits 1-3 is a life skill that will benefit them their entire lives.

STUDENT HEALTH CARE

Has your child’s medical needs changed?

Please update your child’s medical information with the school. Our school asks for medical information when you enrol your child, however it is also important that you let us know if your child’s health care needs change or if a new health condition develops.

If there have been changes to your child’s medical needs, or they no longer have a medical need that you have previously told us about, please visit the school office to update your child’s medical details.

Remember to also notify staff in the school office of any changes to your contact details or to the contact details of other people nominated as emergency contacts.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL (SRC)

BUDDY BENCH

Have you noticed the new, colourful Buddy Bench in the playground?

The Buddy Bench is an idea that was created by the members of the SRC.

We used the money raised from mufti days and the Mother’s and Father’s

Day stalls to purchase the new bench and the tree hugging seats near it.

The Buddy Bench is for students who need someone to play with, or

perhaps want to find a new friend. The SRC will be monitoring the buddy

bench regularly and assisting children to find a new friend or to find an

activity to do at recess and lunch.

You can find the new bench in front of 4K and 4L’s classroom.

Thank you to all the students and families that participated in mufti days

and purchased items from our stalls. We couldn’t have done this without

you!

AMBASSADOR GARDENING PROJECT

As a school leader, I was selected to be the Liverpool Public School

Ambassador. I went to special Ambassador meetings at different schools

in the local area such as Sadleir PS and Warwick Farm PS.

At our first meeting, the Ambassadors from each school were placed into

a group of 4 (I was put into a group of all girls). As a group, we had to

create a goal that we could work on to improve our school. We decided

that we wanted to improve the garden beds in each of our schools.

I came back to school and organised a ‘Gardening Team’ with the help of

Ms Comer, Mrs Kirkness and the SRC. We than organised a mufti day to

raise money for this project. Thanks to the help of Mr Calabrio (the

gardening guru) and Mr Foster, our garden started taking shape, and

more students started to help.

After a lot of hard work, we did it! The garden is almost complete.

3-6 PSSA NETBALL REPORT

Winter PSSA this year (terms 2 and 3) saw a lot of rain, however, we still managed to squeeze in a season

of play. This season, we were able to select two senior two junior teams to represent our school for this

year’s competition. Our teams were categorised into different divisions, allowing competition to be fair

against other schools.

The students walked safely down to Woodward Park on Friday afternoons. Each team played against

another school in a game of netball. The students demonstrated commitment, enthusiasm and

improvement in skills every week and should be commended on their efforts.

Congratulations to the Senior C team who played their semi -final on Friday 9th September against Wattle

Grove. It was an exciting match to watch. Unfortunately, the final score was 17 – 13 with Wattle Grove

winning.

To conclude, both coaches would like to congratulate all the players on developing and improving your

skills in netball. Also, we congratulate our teams for the sportsmanship and maturity that you all

demonstrated while representing our school.
