Year 7 Project Based LearningParent Evening

Hello parents, caregivers and students. My name is Henry Phan. I am one of the Year 7 students that attends Liverpool Boys High School. I came from a school called Casula Public School.

The idea of starting high school didn’t really bother me that much until it was time to actually apply for a high school. Liverpool Boys High School offered me a place at their wonderful school and, obviously, I ac-cepted that offer.

At the time I accepted the offer, I was really excited. I couldn’t stop thinking of the awesome things I would be doing at high school. But, just as any kid who jumps ahead without stopping, there were obviously some questions. How could I keep in touch with my primary school friends? Where was I meant to be on the first day? Trust me, those were only the begin-ning of the list of questions I had at that time.

Around the middle of the school holidays, I stopped worrying and just carried on with my life. Eventually, it was time to start high school. On the first day, I made a couple of friends. I was also introduced to PBL or Project Based Learning. In Project Based Learning, instead of doing History or Geography in lessons and copying a textbook with the teacher talk-ing at the front, we combine subjects together in one big project.

In Project A, we combine History, Art, English and Music. In Project B, we combine Geography, Maths and Science and are doing lots of experiments. Be-lieve me, you wouldn’t believe how many experi-ments we have done!

In Project A, we are creating pieces of art that rep-resent us and writing our own autobiographies. We are also going to write a Haiku poem about ourselves and make it into a song. We are also doing logos and making caps that represent us. In Project B, we are trying to make the water in the Georges River clean and drinkable.

In addition to Project A and B, we also have Nu-meracy and Literacy classes. For Numeracy, I have Ms. Singh. For Literacy, I have Ms. Reyes and Ms. Bea. Of course, we also have PE and PE theory. My teacher for PE is Ms. Kelly. In PE, students work together as a team and encourage each other even if they are losing. Students have lots of fun and always want to do more. So far, we have played newcombe ball, volleyball, basketball and some of us even got to play tennis and soccer after our im-munisations. Just today, we started to play netball and if I am right, we are playing European handball next. In theory classes, we learn about our body, nutrition, health and our values.

I am starting to settle into Liverpool Boys High School. The people here are really friendly and are always ready to help. I believe that the teachers and students at Liverpool Boys High School are like one giant family. I believe this because I have been here long enough to see the love and care that is at Liverpool Boys High School. ichoose Exhbition Night

The iChoose exhibition held on Wednesday, 18th March was a complete success! All the books turned out beautifully and all four of the advisories (supervised by our iChoose advisors Ms. Bea, Ms. Demetrios, Ms. Kelly and Mr. Catalanotto), made wonderful presentations.

As well as creating a book on ‘Tricking’, Adam Eid also gave us a demonstration of his own ‘Trick-ing’ skills. ‘Tricking’ is a form of martial arts. It is a training discipline that combines martial arts kicks with flips and twists from gymnastics.

We had a guest speaker, an old LBHS student, Pe-ter Eichorn, who is in the book publishing business. Students, parents and the wider audience were able to acquire some real world information about the publishing profession. This real world connec-tion has been an initiative of the iChoose subject.

This was a great first exhibition that all iChoose stu-dents and advisors should be proud of. We hope for an even bigger turnout next term.

1. Why did you become a teacher? After working as an accountant, I realised that it was not really what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I thought I would be more suited to teach-ing. I was also inspired by some of my own teach-ers.

2. How long have you been teaching at LBHS?2015 will be my 19th year here at LBHS! 3. What is one thing you like to do outside of school?Reading and running. I also enjoy playing netball and spending time with my family.

4. If you could do another job instead of teaching, what would it be?I would like to be a book editor; I love reading. Or perhaps something in the corporate world.

5. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?Hopefully still doing the same thing!

6. What is it you like about teaching? I like knowing that I have made a difference in stu-dents’ lives.

7. What is one thing you have learnt from being a teacher?I cannot name one thing. I have learnt so much throughout my career as a teacher and Head Teacher. One thing I have realised is that teaching is all about relationships and how important they are.

8. What would you prefer: to read a book or watch a movie? Read a book of course; I’m an English teacher!

Origin Transport Destination Legal Studies Excursion

On Thursday, March 12th, my Legal Studies class, to-gether with our teacher, Mr. Catalonotto, embarked on an excursion in the company of extraordinary asylum-seekers from the warzones of the Middle-East.

Origin Transport Destination gave us an insight into the refugee experience. At the start, I was a bit sceptical but decided that it was an opportunity to learn, and enhance my skills for Legal Studies. Not knowing what was going to happen created a sense of anticipation as we caught the train to Auburn where our amazing journey began.

When we arrived, there was a short walk to the first location at the Community Centre of Auburn. There were 3 buses parked alongside the venue. After registering and handing in our phones, we walked into a building where it was dark and humid. There were UV lights, 3 oddly placed chairs and paintings on the walls that were illuminated brightly. It was all very strange as we were given no explanation.

After this, we boarded the buses not knowing what was going to happen next. A woman then started talking on a microphone telling us her story. She was a refugee from Afghanistan. We stopped three sep-arate times and each time a different refugee told their story. There were similarities in their stories but to me that didn’t matter; I could have listened all night long. In my opinion, these are the stories that should be in the news, and then it will change the voice of refugees and change the opinions of Australian Society.

It was very heart-warming and I felt very humbled to be able to sit down and have them personally tell their ordeal to a group of random strangers. I haven’t experienced this feeling ever before in my life. Finally, we arrived at the Casula Powerhouse Museum where a number of refugees performed. They demonstrated a great variety of contemporary dance and traditional music performances. I really I want to thank the refugees for giving us the op-portunity to learn of their struggles of coming to Australia.

Blood Donor News

Thinking about doing something that truly makes a difference? Something that could help someone greatly? Have you ever thought about donating blood? Blood is vital to life and for many people, blood donors are their lifeline. Currently, 1 in 3 Austral-ians need blood, yet only 1 in 30 donate. Every time someone donates blood, they actually save three lives instead of one. Blood donations help go to can-cer/ leukaemia patients, trauma patients or anyone who undergoes surgery. On Tuesday the 12th of March, three LBHS students participated in the Red Cross Blood Bank Youth Am-bassador Training Day. Students from all around NSW attended this workshop which equipped them with all of the information about donating blood and the resources needed. In this workshop stu-dents learnt about the Red Cross, the work that they have been doing and what it means to be a Red Cross ambassador. Red Cross is not entirely about donating blood, their roles are very broad. From hu-manitarian aid, to helping out the elderly who live by themselves, there are so many ways that the Red Cross assist people who are in need.

LBHS has three blood donor days coming up this year. If you are over 16 and would like to donate, please see the LBHS Red Cross Ambassadors: Aman Verma, Harry Abdullah or James Krishna, (pictured above).

• Tuesday 19th May• Tuesday 25th August • Tuesday 17th November Our school is registered in the Red Cross blood bank group tally ‘Club Red25’. For those who are already a regular blood donor or those new to donating, you are more than welcome to join our group.
