TAS Hospitality News

We are exceptionally proud to announce that Ifraaz and Shiraaz Ali were successful with their applications for a work placement at Echo Entertainment Group (The Star City Casino) during the week of 18th – 22nd November 2013. After a rigorous application and high-ly competitive process, the boys were informed that they had beaten numerous candidates for the coveted positions. They will be rotated through a number of different venues at The Star. They may even be lucky enough to rub shoulders with Adriano Zumbo in his Patissier, Stafano Manfredi in his modern Italian res-taurant or even David Chang in his award winning res-taurant, Momofuku. What we do know for sure is that Ifraaz and Shiraaz will be wonderful ambassadors for LBHS. An interviewer described both students as very promising young men, with specific goals to make it in the industry. He hopes that this rare opportunity as-sists them with their career path.

This is not the first time that these brothers have im-pressed one of Sydney’s most elite establishments. Their first work placement was at Matt Moran’s Aria Restaurant. Aria Restaurant was so impressed with these budding young chefs that they offered them both apprenticeships when they finish their senior studies. When asked what their work placement was like, the boys said, “we were so nervous, we were shaking, but we worked really hard. We wanted to make you proud and we loved it there. Working at Aria was awesome and it changed our lives.”

On behalf of LBHS, we would like to thank Ms. Fields, our hospitality teacher, for allowing these students ac-cess to such a wonderful opportunity. We wish them luck with their latest work placement. We may even see them with their own TV show or cookbook!

The SRC Presents:Mr. Rushworth. H.S.I.E Teacher

1. Why did you become a teacher?I became a teacher as it is the most challenging, frus-trating and also one of the most rewarding jobs that there is on offer. I also learn new things all the time.2. How long have you been teaching at LBHS?Far too long! I have been teaching at LBHS for 10 years.3. What’s one thing you like to do outside of school? One thing that I like to do outside of school as a hobby is scuba diving. I also enjoy travelling and I practise Ak-ido, which is a martial art.4. If you could do another job instead of teaching what would it be?Other jobs that I would enjoy instead of teaching would be an archaeologist, a spy or an astronaut. Or I would like to be Dr. Who, Indiana Jones or James Bond.5. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?Probably still teaching, but at a tropical location. I would spend my spare time diving and exploring ship-wrecks.6. What is it you like about teaching H.S.I.E?The thing I like about teaching History is that it is like one big fascinating story, and it also provides a sense of who we are and why we are here.7. What’s one thing you have learned from being a teacher?I’ve actually learnt a couple things from being a teach-er, such as how to think on my feet and how to be quick with a comeback.8. What would you prefer: to read or watch a movie? Which one? Both, because books require concentration and imagi-nation (plus they are portable,) while movies are good for relaxing on a hot day. My favourite book is ‘Fraction of the Hole’ by the Australian author Steve Toltz, and my favourite movie is a comedy from the sixties, ‘The Party’.

Community News

Bullying Workshop for ParentsOn Wednesday 23rd October, LBHS hosted a Bullying Workshop run by Learning Links. The three hour work-shop assisted parents in identifying bullying, including cyber and school based, as well as strategies that par-ents and students can employ to prevent these experi-ences.

Sponsored by Liverpool Catholic Club, the program ena-bled our parents to learn about school policies and ef-fective ways to deal with bullying both in and out of school. ‘It was a very engaging and informative work-shop,’ says CEO, Latifa Zuhbi. ‘Parents were able to ask questions and share their own personal experiences.’

Healthy Women WorkshopThe Health Workshops run by South West Area Health Service are continuing this term. Every Thursday from 11am to 1pm parents are welcome to attend.

Learning About the Australian GovernmentOn Tuesday, 29th October, LBHS, in conjunction with Liverpool Migrant Resource Centre, invited parents and carers to come and learn about the Australian govern-ment. The Australian Electoral Commission presented the workshop from 11am to 1pm and parents learnt about:- rights and the importance of having a say during government elections- the role of our local government (Liverpool City Council)- the role of the state and federal governments

For more information about the fantastic community initiatives at LBHS, phone our Community Engagement Officer, Latifa Zuhbi on 9602 7979.
