Shade/WoodlandThere are lots of great new options for low-light gardens, including plants with variegated leaves and non-traditional colours and textures. No longer are gardeners limited to using dark green leafy plants in the shade.

Acanthus mollis Tasmanian AngelTM

Variegated bear’s breeches

The first variegated acanthus. Found in Tasmania, this gem offers striking, bold leaves with white margins and mottling. This plant forms a large clump of 90-120 cm (3-4 ft.) tall ornamental flower stalks of pink and cream in late summer. Tolerant of most soils, it thrives in deep, fertile, moist and well-drained conditions in full to partial shade.

Amsonia montana ‘Short Stack’ Dwarf bluestar

This dwarf form creates a perfect mound of clean, dark green foliage, with medium sky-blue flowers in early spring. Well suited for smaller gardens and the border’s edge. Sun to partial shade. Grows 25-30 cm (10-12 in.) tall.

Aquilegia ‘White Barlow’‘White Barlow’ double columbine

Dahlia-like double white flowers pop in a shady location. This double columbine grows 50-65 cm (20-25 in.) tall and blooms in spring.

Athyrium ‘Ocean’s Fury’‘Ocean’s Fury’ painted fern

This plant is named because the habit and colouring resemble ocean waves crashing on the shore. This upright and crested fern from Thurman Maness is a wonderful addition to lighten up shady areas, or in the woodland garden. It prefers fertile, moist soils and full to partial shade.

Brunnera macrophylla ‘Mr. Morse’‘Mr. Morse’ Siberian bugloss

Brunnera macrophylla ‘Spring Yellow’‘Spring Yellow’ Siberian bugloss

Corydalis ‘Chocolate Stars’‘Chocolate Stars’ corydalis

A gorgeous low growing woodland plant with chocolate brown foliage in spring, reminiscent of coleus. Small white

starry flowers in summer change to green as the season progresses. Unlike most other corydalis, ‘Chocolate Stars’ will tolerate dry shade. This is a good groundcover choice and an excellent companion to other woodland plants such as hostas, ferns, and primulas. Grows 30 cm (12 in.) tall in partial to full shade. Delphinium grandiflorum ‘Summer Morning’‘Summer Morning’ delphiniumThe Summer delphinium series brings the first pink flowering grandiflorum type to the market with the breeding breakthrough of ‘Summer Morning’. Like the pink skies of an early summer sunrise, Delphinium ‘Summer Morning’ paints the landscape with its delicate, light pink flowers over lacy green leaves. ‘Summer Morning’ is more heat tolerant and better branched than other delphiniums of this type. Early flowering, coupled with a strong, basal branching habit ensures that ‘Summer Morning’ will provide a multitude of flowers throughout the summer.

Backyard Ecotopia: Sustainable landscaping in your own backyardThink Globally, Act Locally. Whether it’s saving rainwater, conserving energy, recycling old construction materials, landscaping with native plants and trees, or composting kitchen scraps, you can do something worthwhile in your own backyard to help conserve the natural environment in your community. Many of us live in urban neighbor-hoods and other built-up areas, so it’s no wonder that we often forget the connection between the way we live and the health of the natural environment. Yet the two are closely linked. The actions we take and the choices we make in our own backyards and gardens can mean healthier drinking water, soils, air and wildlife — now, and for the future.

The Backyard Ecotopia garden at Canada Blooms (G-4) features choices for backyard living that are both beneficial for people and good for the natural environment, whether that environment is upstream or downstream from where you live or as far away as the Great Lakes. It demonstrates how backyard gardeners can reduce waste, water and energy consumption; produce nutrient-rich garden soils; and create inviting backyard habitat for native species of wildlife. Following the show, the components of this garden feature will be donated to local conservation and environmental education projects.

Cottage garden charm never goes out of style. The designers behind these projects understand how landscapes can say “home,” to the eye, as well as the heart. A garden gate marks the spot where family time begins. Children remember the fragrance of old roses forever. Informal plantings blend over time into compositions with perfect balance.

outdoorsdefine a room

Enlightened landscape design starts with people. Make an outdoor room for meals or conversation, then let your planning radiate out. The idea is not new — formal gardens created for European royalty used this same concept, only the rooms were bigger. Smaller scale means greater comfort anyway. And we enjoy advantages crowned heads never dreamed of: weatherproof fabrics, radiant heaters, even high-end outdoor sound systems.

Blur the line between outdoors and in, to get more value from both.

Many outdoor rooms are defined by verticals;

modular design

Ontario is vast and wild, yet our cities have strong Old World flavour. Urban homeowners regard their outdoor spaces as private courtyards, often interpreted with eurostyle sophistication. A balcony rail is the property line, a bright awning is shade and a strawberry jar planted with herbs is the kitchen garden.

Serenity is where you find it.

Planters on a rooftop are mini green roofs — mounted on wheels to satisfy condo requirements. The specimens, including weigela, hydrangea, dogwood, Japanese maple and purple sandcherry, stray far from traditional planter choices. Perennial Gardens, Toronto

Berberis thunbergii ‘Maria’Sunjoy ™ Gold Pillar barberry

An upright golden barberry with red new growth, its best colour is in full sun. Tested against other varieties, Sunjoy™ Gold Pillar shows superior burn resistance. Sunjoy™ grows 90-120 cm (3-4 ft.) tall. Tolerant of most soil conditions, it will withstand dry conditions once established, and does not like extremely moist conditions. Hybridized in Poland. Hardy to zone 5.

Berberis thunbergii ‘Moretti Select’First Editions™ Cabernet™ barberry

Bright crimson new growth is followed by deep burgundy-red to purple foliage. The rich colour stands out all season and is the perfect compliment for plants with golden leaves. In fall, leaves turn to tones of orange and scarlet, complemented by shiny red berries. Cabernet™ barberry has a rounded habit and is drought tolerant once established. It’s generally not eaten by deer. This low maintenance plant needs no pruning. Hardy to zone 5.

Buddleja ‘Butterfly Heaven’Butterfly Heaven butterfly bush

This beautiful flowering shrub’s large, fragrant flowers attract butterflies to the garden like no other family of plants. Long, tapering panicles of tiny, sweetly scented lavender florets, with orange eyes, form on plants from late summer into fall. Few plants are easier for professionals or gardeners to grow — cut back almost to the ground in early spring. This selection was personally selected by Adrian Bloom of Blooms of Bressingham.Hardy to zone 6.

Hibiscus syriacus ‘America Irene Scott’Sugar Tip™ rose of Sharon

This variegated Hibiscus blooms with clear, double pink flowers in late summer. Can grow as tall as 2.4 m (8 ft.) tall in full sun. Beautiful as a privacy screen or in specimen planting. Rose of Sharon is typically one of the latest plants to leaf out in the spring, so patience is needed. Once the leaves unfurl, the plant will quickly catch up to the others in your garden. Hardy to zone 6.

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Lynn’ Let’s Dance™ Starlight hydrangea

Let’s Dance is the first-ever lacecap hydrangea that blooms on new wood with large flowers on strong stems. Does best in full sun to partial shade and prefers a well-drained soil amended with organic matter. The breeder says Let’s DanceTM Starlight hydrangea is a good choice for gardeners in northern climates where Hydrangea macrophylla

has difficulty blooming. Hardy to zone 6.

Hydrangea paniculata ‘DVPinky’ Pinky WinkyTM hydrangea

A very unique hardy hydrangea with massive two-toned, white and pink flowers in mid-summer. Strong upright red stems hold the large, 30-40 cm (12-16 in.) blooms up so you never get the drooping look like Pee Gee hydrangea. The flower heads continue to grow throughout the season and as the older flowers turn dark pink the new flowers continue to emerge white. The effect is stunning. A truly remarkable plant for the summer and autumn landscape. Hardy to zone 5. Photo courtesy www.provenwinners.com.

Weigela florida ‘Carlton’Ghost™ weigela

GhostTM weigela has deep, dark red flowers in spring, but the main attraction is the foliage which turns to a ghostly, iridescent, translucent butter cream as summer progresses. Best in full sun. Reaches a mature height of 1.2 to 1.5 m (4 - 5 ft.). Hardy to zone 5.

Rosa ‘BAIgirl’ My Girl, Easy Elegance® shrub rose

Easy Elegance® roses have been bred with the goal of taking the fear out of growing roses. Each plant in the Easy Elegance collection is as simple to grow as any flowering shrub. These roses are low-maintenance, hardy, disease-resistant plants that bloom all season long. My Girls has round, deep pink buds held in clusters of five to 30, opening to blossoms so full they almost hide the centres. Backed by medium green foliage, this rose has proven highly resistant to black spot with little to no defoliation. Its compact, upright habit and good repeat bloom can be used in foundations, shrub borders and as an informal hedge or accent. Grown on its own root.

Rosa ‘BAIrage’All the Rage, Easy Elegance® shrub rose

Multi-coloured blooms with tight, coral buds, swirl open to apricot-coloured blossoms with luminous yellow centres. Blooms age to lipstick pink before dropping cleanly away. Clean, disease-resistant foliage on round form makes for a shrub rose useful in borders or as an informal hedge. Grown on its own root.

Rosa ‘BAIsuhe’ Super Hero, Easy Elegance® shrub rose

Gardeners don’t need to be a super hero to grow great roses. Without super human effort, they’ll be able to enjoy gorgeous, hybrid tea-shaped blooms all season long. Clusters of perfect, red blossoms stand out strongly against clean, medium to dark green, satiny foliage. This neat, compact, disease-resistant shrub is ideal in the border or foundation planting. Grown on its own root.

perennials

form plus colour

Depend on three favourites when you want to build structure

with perennials: indestuctible daylilies, the feathery yet assertive

lavender spikes of Russian sage and blue fescue ornamental grass

— porcupine of the garden. Ladell Landscaping & Gardens, Ottawa

Massed perennials are replacing woody plants in structural roles, as designers respond to more adventuresome client tastes. Perennials are simply more interesting than your basic juniper. Colours can be striking or muted. Growth habits are varied and distinctive. Perennial flowers have fanciful forms and often, lovely fragrances.

Perennials: less structural than trees and shrubs, but effects can be compelling.

the carpet is alive

Canadians love their lawns. Maybe the affair starts in childhood, associated with the smell of grass stains. Since you can grow a healthy lawn several ways, you are free to use turf in a way that is right for your property and your lifestyle. Benefits are more than a soft, clean, cool, oxygen-producing groundcover.

Turf is the green ribbon that ties your landscape design together.

A soft emerald turf shape sets off undulating borders.

This submission received the Landscape

Ontario Grounds Management award.

calm and cool

Clients with demanding careers wanted to feel as if they were on vacation as soon as they arrive home. A calm green expanse of lawn sets that tone.Yards Unlimited Landscaping, Nepean

Level turf need not be featureless; just add stepping-stones. The soft, healthy look of this lawn contrasts nicely with cool, smooth geometry of hardsurface insets. Later-blooming flowers fill in when the spring bulb show is over. Dayspring Fine Gardens, Pickering

Throw beams in directions the sun can’t match. Paint contrast like a film director. Wire your garden to extend its appeal late into the evening. On more practical notes, landscape lighting enhances safety and security for your family.

Use light to attract beautiful night visitors to your landscape.

Although we gardeners may be quick to embrace the hottest new cultivar, we are much slower to accept a new trend. We do not like changes to our favourite design or colour palette. But, sometimes we may not have a choice. Today’s environmental concerns have gardeners embracing change, change that is not simply a response to fashion trends.

During a trip to British Columbia this fall, I had the good fortune to hear Sally Gregson, one of Britain’s foremost gardeners. A highly respected horticulturist, she has written widely for gardening magazines,

Conserve resources, minimize maintenance, continue to enjoy beauty

appeared on the BBC and is a sought-after guest speaker. Two key words Gregson used throughout her presentation, “Trends for a new century,” were sustainability and matrix.

Garden for sustainability“Gardens reflect the times in which they are created,” said Gregson. “More concern about the environment is influencing design and content. New garden design is about being in the natural world. Plants now must be able to tolerate drought conditions and handle specific soils. Immaculate lawns have been turned into meadow gardens.”

Gregson noted that, “It’s a new naturalization; a move towards reflecting nature, but with the instinctive human need to improve upon it.” She explained that other aspects of sustainable gardening include backyard composting and rainwater collection.

The sustainability trend also involves new interest in vegetable gardens. “The fastest-growing garden segment in the United Kingdom is veggies.” Gregson said. Many people in her country are growing vegetables among their flowering plants.

Crowd out weedsMatrix planting, according to Gregson, means choosing and managing plants to occupy space so effectively that no room is left for weeds. Plant selection is key to success. Poor choices result in dominance by one or two species, and the disappearance of those that cannot compete.

Interweaving two to three types of plants into one floral display creates a matrix. Colours can range from the hot side of the palette, with orange and reds dominating, and toward non-traditional choices, such as blue or pinks. “The trend is towards bright, harsh colours, in large displays, with all plants the same height,” says Gregson. She noted that no more than three types of plants should be intermingled.

Her photos highlighted some of England’s famous gardens: Lady Farm, Somerset Fetzer Wines and Hidcote. Gregson also showed displays from the famous Chelsea show, the U.K.’s Canada Blooms, to demonstrate the trend towards gardens designed for sustainability. Some of the display gardens reflected a move towards meadow gardening.

Whether you embrace new trends, or stick with the tried and true, it’s still all about the joy and satisfaction that gardens provide. And no matter what trend is in style, working in the garden is a good thing for both the soul and the environment. Just think: in a few more weeks, we’ll be able to help both.

Yellow and orange, set off by clear complementary blue, make a successful matrix mix at the Fetzer Wines garden.

Colour is not the only tool available for intermingling — Gregson created this effect using texture for contrast.

Perennial grasses are ideal choices for sustainable gardening. As a bonus, naturalized drifts create their own pleasing design over time.

Choosing your bedding plants can feel a little like gambling — performance in your garden may not measure up to the photo on the tag. New cultivars are marketed each year, in more colours, and they are distributed widely across the continent. Picking good performers for southern Ontario can be a chancy bet.

You can improve your odds using research from the University of Guelph Trial Garden. The garden is always open to visitors, and you can browse results from the past few years at www.plant.uoguelph.ca/trialgarden. We have expanded the trials to Landscape Ontario Horticultural Trades Association east of Milton — be sure to enjoy the colour this season as you zip by on the 401, and you are invited to stop in during the week for a closer look.

The following newly released bedding plants performed exceptionally well in the 2007 summer trials at the University of Guelph, and should bring good luck in your home garden.

‘Blazin’ Lime’ iresine Iresine is a stunning foliage plant; its

vigorous growth makes it a great can-didate for landscape plantings. Plant in

partial sun for the best leaf colour.‘Blazin’ Lime’s’ large leaves with sturdy, rose-coloured stems give way to cream

and green multi-coloured leaves; height and spread can range from 45-76 cm.

‘Solcito’ trailing zinnia‘Solcito’ is a new, small-flowered trail-ing zinnia that blooms through summer without the need for deadheading. It tolerates drought, heat and cool conditions. Use it in both containers and beds, where it can reach a height of 30 cm.

‘SuperCal’ Petunia and Calibrachoa hybrid

‘SuperCal TerraCotta’ (pictured) with its bushy habit, and ‘SuperCal Neon Rose’

with a more prostrate habit, are the best cultivars in this new series.

‘Cora’ series of CatharanthusCommonly called vinca or Madagascar periwinkle, this plant thrives under warm, sunny conditions. Its dark, glossy leaves contrast well with the white, pink or violet blooms. The newly released ‘Cora’ series has great vigour and disease resistance.

‘Northern Lights Lavender’ Pentas

This new Pentas tolerates both cool and warm growing conditions, making it ideal

for the vagaries of Ontario’s summers. ‘Northern Lights Lavender’ will bloom all summer long if grown under sunny

conditions. Its nectar attracts butterflies and other pollinators.
