EX1- 0046_01 (Interview with Jo Scott)
02:05:56:21Cecily: Im here with the festival director, Jo Scott. So Jo how did the festival come about?
02:06:01:29Jo: Well it all started when we wanted to extend the summer season because tourism is
quite a short period in this town and we figured we came out to the end of the season,
Septembers usually a great time for the weather so we have a harvest festival and
Kents always been known as the garden of England so why not just use the produce in
this area and we have got some great producers here because the dairy and the hops so
weve got beer, cider and its great, lovely, so thats how it started.
02:06:26:39Cecily: So what makes Broadstairs Food Festival such an attraction?
02:06:29:38Jo: Its an attraction because first of all its an amazing location on the sea front so its
perfect for this type of event. Its a very strong vibrant community, weve got excellent
volunteers to help us out all year round supporting it, running the festival itself and of
course we have such great food producers in the area, thats what makes it perfect.

02:07:01:31Cecily: So what benefits have come out of this festival?
02:07:04:08
Jo: The benefits are many fold, because its a community event it does bring thecommunity together so it helps build that lovely, friendly vibrant atmosphere weve got
around. There s a massive benefit to the traders in the town because we bring in about
45,000 people over 3 days so we dont just create benefit for the direct traders here but
for the town itself and it promotes the town. We also give benefit to the local hotels and
guesthouses because theyre all packed out so its raising the profile of this area of Kent
because people think of mid and west kent, Sevenoaks and the like but weve got so
much going on in East Kent and its amazing.
02:07:43:13Cecily: So what makes this food festival different from other food festivals?
02:07:45:39Jo: Mainly because its free and were totally committed to keeping it free because thats
the whole point its community, bring the people in for free but also its 95% Kent
produce, its not down from London up from the West country, its Kent and thats what
were all about, producing and creating this lovely environment for Kent food.
