Fall Out Boy

17 March 2014

Phones4U Arena, Manchester

hether you describe them as

emo, pop-punk, indie-rock or

alternative, there is no

disputing that Fall Out Boy are

bona fide world stars .

Fall Out Boy consists of

vocalist/ guitarist Patrick

Stump, bassist/lyricist Pete

Wentz, guitarist Joe Trohman

and drummer Andrew Hurley,

who came together in

Wilmette, just outside of

Chicago in around 2001.

The group (whose music is

variedly described as emo,

pop-punk, indie-rock and

alternative!) rose to

prominence in the mid-2000s

with a string of hit singles and

sales of over four million

albums. Their major

breakthrough came with the

album Under the Cork Tree

which went double platinum

and spawned hit singles Sugar,

We’re Goin Down and Dance,

Dance. Celebrity status was

ensured.

Besides hit singles and

albums, the band has received

numerous awards, including

Kerrang! Awards for best

video (“Sugar, We’re Going

Down” in 2006 and “This Ain’t

a Scene, It’s an Arms Race” in 2007); and in 2007

were named Best Group at the MTV VMAs and

Teen Choice Awards. They have also received

several Grammy nominations.

Fall Out Boy’s latest album, Save Rock and Roll,

was released in 2013, some five years and

several solo and side projects after releasing

their previous album, Folie A Deux, which had

received mixed reviews and did not meet

commercial expectations, despite strong hits

such as I Don’t Care. Save Rock and Roll has

chalked up 470,000 sales in the US, hitting the

number 1 spot in the US and Canada and

number 2 spot in the UK, Australia and New

Zealand.

Fall Out Boy have also released two live albums –

Live in Phoenix in 2008 and Live in Tokyo 2013.

It’s not difficult to see why they continually

receive rave reviews from UK fans for their

shows. They are full of energy, and their latest

shows have revealed an even more prominent

stage presence and yet more assured

performance. The band still retains the witty

banter that fans have come to expect and the self

-deprecating humour of Patrick Stump is always

certain to entertain. We can also expect

elaborate stage settings and an array of hits to

keep fans happy. In fact their live shows have

been known to convert many non-believers into

fans.

The Pretty Reckless

MUSIC

W ith their second studio album, Going

To Hell, set to be released on 17th

March, American rock stars, The

Pretty Reckless are set to return to Manchester to

play at The Phones4U Arena on 17th March (yes,

the same day as their album is released!).

Formed in 2009 and fronted by former actress

and Gossip Girl star Taylor Momsen, the band

released their debut album Light Me Up in 2010

to critical and commercial acclaim, hitting

number 1 in the UK and US Rock Albums Chart

and spawning several successful singles – Make

Me Wanna Die (featured on the soundtrack to

the hit movie Kick-Ass), Miss Nothing and Just

Tonight. They had previously released an EP, the

self-titled The Pretty Reckless, which had also

been well received.

Going to Hell is highly anticipated and has already

courted controversy with a an album cover which

features Taylor Momsen naked, something which

she then goes on to repeat in the video for the

song Heaven Knows. But controversy is nothing

new for The Pretty Reckless (Taylor has often

been criticised for her, at times, risqué attire and

it is most likely no coincidence that the opening

words of the title track Light Me Up are “Does

what I’m wearing seem to shock you? Well that’s

ok.”) – and in reality what good rock band

doesn’t court the occasional bit of controversy?

The full line up of the band is Taylor Momsen

(vocals and guitar); Ben Phillips (guitar and

vocals); Mark Damon (bass) and Jamie Perkins

(drums and percussion).

The Pretty Reckless have toured heavily, both as a

support band and headlining in their own right.

Having performed on the Warped Tour in 2010

(41 shows), their Light Me Up Tour in support of

the debut album (2010-2012) took in 112 shows,

followed by The Medicine Tour (a further 59

shows in 2012). Their headline gig at The

Academy in Manchester in 2010 showed that

despite her tender age (17 at the time), Taylor

Momsen was more than capable of fronting a

band and exuding rock star charisma – delighting

fans. They have also toured with the likes of Guns

N’ Roses, Marilyn Manson and Evanescence and

performed at countless festivals. She also joined

Marilyn Manson and Johnny Depp on stage to

perform at the 2012 Revolver Golden Gods award

show.

Musically, the band cannot be faulted. Their debut

album was everything a rock album should be –

heavy guitars, strong lyrics, occasionally dark, lively

and full of attitude, yet capable of showing a

(slightly) softer side on occasions. The influences of

the likes of the White Stripes and Led Zeppelin can

be heard.

Live, they are an extremely tight unit who do not

disappoint, owning the stage and rocking it until the

lights go down.

promises to

be quite a

year for 22-

year-old

Southampton born Foxes

(Louise Rose Allen), who is

coming to the Ruby Lounge on

8th March as part of her

headline tour of the UK and

Ireland.

Already in 2014 she has a

Grammy win under her belt for

her collaboration with Zedd on the track Clarity,

with over 2.5 million copies sold in the US.

Intoxicating single Let Go For Tonight on 23rd

February has already had over 2.5 million views,

and she has been named Vevo’s Lift Artist … and

her debut album Glorious isn’t even set for release

until 12th May! Add to this an entry in the Billboard

top 10, a number 1 on the Billboard Dance Charts

with addictive song Youth, and a tour in the US and

it is not difficult to see that big things can be

expected of her. She has certainly come a long way

from playing at open mic nights!

Such is her music that it is reported that Pete

Wentz of Fall Out Boy stopped his own birthday

party to find out

who the singer of

Youth was when

he heard it and

demand that she

appear on the

band’s number

one selling album.

In fact, there has been no shortage of artists

wanting to work with her. In addition to

Grammy winning Clarity she has also worked

with Fall Out Boy on Just One Yesterday and

Rudimental on Home.

Drawing on inspiration as varied as Bjork, Kate

Bush and Portishead’s Beth Gibbons to Celine

Dion and The Little Mermaid, Foxes’ debut

album Glorious is described as a collection of

intelligent pop songs. As well as singles Youth

and Let Go For Tonight there will also be live

hits Holding Onto Heaven and Night Owls Early

Birds. Deep heart-felt lyrics are also supported

by an easily heard dance and trip-hop

influence.

Haim

S isters Este, Danielle, and Alana,

collectively known as Haim (pronounced

Hime), hail from Los Angeles, USA and

are bringing their brand of rock to the

Manchester Academy on 8th March.

They released their debut album Days Are Gone

in 2013 and it went on to reach the top of the UK

Charts, going gold. It also reached the top 10 in

the US, Canada, Ireland and Australia.

In the same year they were named as BBC’s

Sound of 2013, ahead of artists such as Angel

Haze and Kodaline.

Whilst they have been compared to the likes of

Fleetwood Mac, they themselves see their

influences as more up-to-date, including the likes

of TLC, Destiny’s Child, Britney and The Stokes.

This has resulted in a sound which many have

described as ‘folk-rock’ with others pointing to an

infusion of R&B and hip hop.

Since their major breakthrough in 2012, they have

toured extensively, supporting the likes of Florence

and the Machine and Mumford & Sons as well as

performing at Glastonbury and other festivals

throughout Europe. Contemporaries have also

taken note of them, with Ellie Goulding commenting

that they are “Interesting, different and really

talented”.

This Californian trio are certainly not dreaming and

are well worth a listen if you are searching for a new

easy listen.

E lla Eyre has burst on to the UK music

scene following collaborations with

Rudimental on hit single “Waiting All

night”; as well as working with Naughty Boy, Wiz

Khalifa, Bastille and Tinie Tempah.

With her awesome EP ‘Deeper’ already released,

her debut single is shortly to follow, with an

album expected to drop this summer. And great

things are expected of the London born 19 year

old—before her debut album has even been

launched she has been named runner up for the

BRIT Critics’ Choice Award and runner up for the

BBC Sound of 2014 award, edging Banks into third

place. On top of this, Billboard and MTV have also

tipped her as an artist to watch in 2014.

And now fresh from her powerful performance at

the Brit Awards where ‘Waiting All Night’ scooped

the award for best single, she is ready to take the

world by storm.

As a natural born performer, she started from an

early age—a dancer from the age of two, drummer

at school, backing singer in a band at only 14. Song

writing seemed to just come naturally and she sings

from a truthful perspective. Ella says that she has

“always been into punchy, loud songs—

passionate, with a message. And I’ve always

been really lyrical” and that certainly shows in

her music.

Such is her natural talent that she even

performed live on Jools Holland’s Annual

Hootenanny to huge acclaim. The 19 year old

Brit School graduate also has numerous

festivals under her belt and will be returning to

Manchester to perform at Parklife in June.

With such an amazing talent, the influence of

the dance tracks she has featured on, a soulful,

powerful voice and a passion for what she

does, the future is looking bright for Ella Eyre.

Republica

I t is almost seventeen years since Republica

were propelled to the forefront of the

British music scene when their single Ready

To Go became a hit following it’s release. It has

since gone on to be used in over 300 television

programs, films and adverts and even at sporting

events. Between 1996 and 1999 they were a

dominant force in the UK music scene, as well as

enjoying success in Europe and the US, joining

bands such as Elastica, Sleeper and the edgier

Garbage. They honed a successful blend of these

bands.

The success of Ready to Go was followed by

other hits such as Drop Dead Gorgeous and their

self-titled debut album Republica which climbed

to the number 4 spot in the UK charts. Drop

Dead Gorgeous itself was featured in hit movie

Scream and lead to helped them to sell over

three million albums.

Sadly, their charge was halted as their highly

anticipated follow up album Speed Ballads

suffered from the collapse of their record label,

Deconstruction Records, just one week after its

release in 1998. Nevertheless the single From

Rush House With Love did achieve success. In the

aftermath, their third album was not released

due to contractual issues.

Comprising of iconic and fiery frontwoman,

Saffron (Samantha Sprackling), as well as Tim

Dorney (keyboard), Johnny Male (guitar) and

Conor Lawrence (drums), they are returning to

Manchester following their comeback in 2013

which took in a new EP (Christina Obey), UK tour

and UK and Europe festival slots. During their

hiatus they certainly kept busy – Saffron worked

alongside The Prodigy, The Cure, Junkie XL, Gary

Numan, and Jeff Beck amongst others.

Their gritty, electronic sound (they themselves

dub it as techno-pop, punk rock) is one which

brings gigs to life and has resulted in their return

being met with enthusiasm from fans, both new

and old. With a mixture of new and old

materials, fans can expect the classics

but also a few surprises.

If they perform as well as they did

back at the Academy in my student

days, it will definitely be something

special.

R ising star Banks (she dropped her

forename Jillian) will be performing at

the Royal Northern College of Music.

The Orange County born, LA raised, 25 year old

Banks finished third in the BBC Sound of 2014

award, and is highly tipped as an artist to watch

this year. She is lauded not only by critics but

also by her contemporaries, Jessie Ware, Katy

Perry and Lily Allen. She has worked with

producers such as Totally Enormous Extinct

Dinosaurs, Jamie Wood and Lil Silve and lists

Fiona Apple, Lauryn Hill and Tracy Chapman as

artists who provide her with inspiration.

Banks’ distinct sound can best be described as

fusing R&B with electronic grooves and with two

EPs under her belt (Fall Over and the London EP)

she is preparing to release her debut album.

C anadian crooner Michael Bublé comes to

the Phones4U Arena on Saturday 1st

March for a five day stint.

With a remarkable eight studio albums and nine

EPs (not even counting his three live albums)

there will be no shortage of material for the multi

-grammy winning artist (four times he has won

the best traditional pop vocal album award) who

has also scooped the AMA for favourite

contemporary artist.

The tour is in support of his latest album To Be

Loved, which went straight to the number one

spot in the UK album charts, as well as hitting the

top of the US and Canadian charts, overall selling

in excess of two million copies. In fact in the UK

alone he has had three number one albums and a

further three which have reached the top ten.

With an effortless display of suave showmanship,

and a smooth blend of big band, swing pop and jazz,

he frequently and understandably receives rave

reviews for his live shows. Many have said, quite

correctly, that he would not have been out of place

as a member of the Rat Pack. He certainly brings

the necessary talent, charm and charisma to the

stage.

ometimes you can just tell that a band is

destined to make it before they have even

strummed a chord, hit a snare, plucked a

string, or even uttered a word – let alone

starting singing. This was one of those occasions.

The Struts are a four piece band consisting of

Luke Spiller (lead vocals) (he also provides vocals

on the forthcoming Mike Oldfield album ‘Man On

The Rocks’), Addo Slack (guitar and vocals), Jed

Elliott (bass and vocals) and Gethin Davies

(drums).

I must confess that I hadn’t seen The Struts live

before. Sure, I’d listened to some of their stuff

online (and was rather taken with it), but the true

test is always live – and they aced it. From the

moment they walked into the venue, passing

through the crowd, it was clear that there was

star quality in the room.

They oozed charisma. The crowd

was clearly excited. And what

followed was a treat.

They were flamboyant. They were

charismatic. They were

everything a rock band should be.

Think Mercury meets Jagger

meets Bowie. It wasn’t just

showmanship and charisma – The

Struts are quite clearly extremely

talented.

The Struts went on to play around an hour and

performed a number of their own tracks, including

‘the quite brilliant ‘Could Have Been Me’ (greeted

by rapture from the crowd) and ‘Kiss This’ as well as

covers, including a cover of Lorde’s Royals which

took the track to a whole new level, before a nod to

Bowie himself with encore ‘Rebel Rebel’.

Performing quite clearly comes naturally to The

Struts.

With an album on the way, The Struts seem

destined for greatness and quite rightfully so.

Page 18: Live Manchester Magazine March 2014

utting on any kind of performance is no

mean feat. There is so much to

organise – personnel, venue, financing,

advertising and so much more. When you

consider that a group of Royal Northern

College of Music final year students has

organised an opera gala featuring world class

professional performers, a chorus of 70 students

and an orchestra of 35, located at a wonderful

venue in the Holy Name Church on Oxford Road

(a Grade II Listed Building built between 1869

and 1871) in little over three months - and it is

for charity - you start to realise the magnitude of

what they have achieved in the face of the

logistical and financial challenges which such an

undertaking presents.

We caught up with Hollie-Anne Bangham, one of

the organisers, a final year student and Mezzo

Soprano, to discuss the Opera Gala and what we

can expect on the night. Her enthusiasm and

dedication to the ambitious project were clear

and refreshing.

The full organising team consists of James Hendry

(Conductor); Georgina Ashcroft (Mezzo Soprano);

Eleanor McIntosh (Soprano); Laura Fairlie

(Soprano); Hollie-Anne Bangham (Mezzo

Soprano); Ffion Perrett (Soprano) and Stephanie

Smith (Soprano).

As well as seeing performances from them, they

have managed to enlist the considerable talents

of acclaimed international performers Mary

Plazas, Louise Winter and Martin Milnes, which

has understandably delighted the organisers.

Mary Plazas (Soprano) has performed with the

English National Opera and has recently been the

lead in Puccini’s Madam Butterfly for which she won

rave reviews. She also received praise from the

Telegraph newspaper for her performance in

Capriccio at the Royal Opera House.

Louise Winters (Mezzo-Soprano) has also

performed with the English National Opera, where

her many roles have included the title role of

Carmen. She has also worked with leading

orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra

and the Hallé Orchestra and appeared many times

at the BBC Proms.

Martin Milnes (who is also Master of Ceremony for

the evening) has the unique ability to perform as a

soprano and tenor and has received wonderful

reviews for his one man show ‘The Falsetto’,

performing classic Gilbert and Sullivan operetta,

theatre numbers from Gershwin and Bernstein and

Opera.

On the evening, we are told to expect Choruses by

Verdi (The Brindisi from La Traviata and the Chorus

by soloists from the RNCM; some Gilbert and

and Bizet; and a rare opportunity to see

Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances from the Opera

The evening’s performance is in aid of the Music

In Hospitals charity. Hollie explained that this

was a charity which works closely with the RNCM

and has a strong presence in Manchester. The

charity aims to improve the quality of life for

adults and children in hospital, hospices, care

homes, day centres and special schools through

the medium of live music, organising

approximately 4,500 professional concerts per

year. As well as one-off concerts they assist with

on-going programmes and residencies. The

charity also offers placements to RNCM students

to enable them to experience music in another

light. Hollie herself has undertaken a placement

in a children’s ward, which she described as eye-

opening—showing the way in which music can

affect people’s lives, making the charity very

close to her own heart.

It is certainly a credit to all involved that they are

putting on what should be such a tremendous

event.

The RNCM Charity Opera Gala takes place on Wednesday 12th March at 7.30pm (doors at 7.00). Further information and tickets may be obtained from www.rncmoperagala.co.uk Tickets £3.00 + BF for Students/Under 16s; £5.00 + BF for concessions; £8.00 + BF for adults.

T he wonderful Hallé Orchestra are set to

bring work from some of the Russian

masters to the Bridgewater Hall on 22

March. A fantastic set list, featuring Glinka,

Tachaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Mussogsky is

sure to delight and excite the crowd. The Hallé

will be conducted by Stephen Bell and feature

Alexandra Dariescu on piano.

The Hallé, founded in Manchester in 1858 by Sir

Charles Hallé, has been performing classical

music throughout the world for more than 150

years – its first concert taking place on 30th

January 1858, making it the UK’s oldest extant

symphony orchestra. It quickly became a vital

part of the Manchester cultural scene, which it

remains today, continually receiving rave reviews

from critics and the public alike for its stirring

performances. The Orchestra plays a very busy

programme of events throughout the year.

On the night, The Hallé will perform:-

Glinka – Ruslan and Ludmilla Overture

The Overture from Mikhail Glinka’s opera Ruslan

and Ludmilla Opera (written between 1837 and

1842) is perhaps the best-known part of the

opera. The Overture is full of heroism, and filled

with rhythmic figures and a pulsating, driving

energy.

Tchaikovsky – Piano Concerto No. 1

The instantly recognisable Piano Concerto No. 1

is one of the most popular of Tchaikovsky’s

compositions and is frequently heard in television

and movies. It was originally composed in 1874,

revised four years later and then again in 1889.

Despite originally receiving some criticism, it is

now one of the most popular Piano Concertos.

The three movements of the Concerto are

incredibly expressive and romantic, featuring

soulful melodies and a thrilling finale sure to

rouse.

This, the last of Rimsky-Korsakov’s series of

orchestral works, was composed between 1887

and 1888. It was premiered in St Petersburg on

15th December 1888, where it was conducted by

Rimsky-Korsakov himself. The work is based on

Russian liturgical themes and Rimsky-Korsakov

said of the Overture “This legendary and heathen

side of the holiday, this transition from the

gloomy and mysterious evening of Passion

Saturday to the unbridled pagan-religious merry-

making of Easter Sunday, is what I was eager to

reproduce in my overture.”

Mussorgsky (orch Rimsky-Korsakov) – A Night on

the Bare Mountain

Another piece, which is instantly recognisable

and has been featured heavily in popular culture,

A Night on the Bare Mountain, was written in

1867 by Mussorgsky as an orchestral poem.

Sadly, it did not receive a good reception

(despite several revisions) until re-orchestrated

by Rimsky-Korsakov some five years after

Mussogsky’s death. Full of menacing

atmosphere from the outset, strong percussion

portraying the storm and fear inducing strings,

this will not disappoint and will certainly keep

the audience on the edge of their seats.

Tchaikovsky – 1812 Overture

The 1812 Overture (composed in 1880) is

regarded as the most famous and triumphant of

Tchaikovsky’s works, telling of Russia’s defence

against Napoleon’s invading army at the Battle of

Borodino in 1812. Despite its popularity,

Tchaikovsky himself was not enamoured with the

piece, composing it to fulfil a commission.

Hallé performances are always well received and

impeccably performed to the highest standards as

expected from a truly world class orchestra.

T his March, Director Ellen Kent brings

Verdi’s opera Aida to the Opera House,

Manchester.

Verdi’s Aida was first performed in Cairo on 24th

December 1871, where it was met with much

enthusiasm, and has gone on to be performed

countless times throughout the world, with an

understandable enduring popularity.

Told over four dramatic acts, the opera tells a

story of war, jealousy and revenge in ancient

Egypt - the story of a beautiful Ethiopian slave girl

(harbouring the secret that she is the King of

Ethiopia’s daughter) and her love for the hero,

Radames (himself, charged with leading the war

against Ethiopia) and includes what is regarded as

some of Verdi’s finest music, in the form of the

Triumphal March as well as the arias Celest Aida

and Ritoma Vincitor.

This production of Aida promises to be

traditionally staged, staying true to its roots,

incorporating spectacular authentic costume

designs as seen on tomb paintings. With special

effects and a truly stunning set taking its

inspiration from the Valley of the Kings, it has

understandably been described as ‘Visually and

vocally gripping from start to finish’ by the

Independent and has received rave reviews from

critics and opera lovers alike.

This performance of Aida runs just under 3 hours 15

minutes including two intervals and is sung in Italian

with English subtitles. It features performances

from highly acclaimed international soloists and the

Moldovan National Opera and Moldovan National

Philharmonic.

W ritten by Tim Rice (Lyrics) and

Andrew Lloyd Webber (Music),

Evita tells the story of Eva

Peron, the wife of former

Argentine dictator Juan Peron, from her youth

(full of ambition) to her time of wealth and power

and her eventual rise to sainthood.

The musical was written in 1976 and produced in

London’s West End in 1978, claiming an Olivier

Award for Best Musical. It has since been

performed around the world by numerous

productions and was made into a film in 1996.

Since the first run, it has scooped more than 20

major awards and numerous award nominations.

In Act I of Evita, we follow Eva Peron’s life from

the hopes and dreams of a 15-year-old to go to

Buenos Aires, through to her social climbing,

becoming a model, radio star and actress, and

her political ambitions, entering into high society

and becoming involved with Colonel Juan

Domingo Peron, the ambitious military colonel

with designs on the presidency.

Act II features Juan Domingo Peron and Eva

Peron enjoying the spoils of power, following

Peron’s election as President in 1946. Alas Eva

declares her true calling to be to the people of

her country, despite her earlier aspirations,

coupled with her increasing struggle with illness

and a declaration of love for her country which

leads to a pursuit of the vice-presidency.

With a show full of memorable songs, such as the

infamous Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, On This Night

of a Thousand Stars, Oh What a Circus and You

Must Love Me, Evita has received positive reviews,

praising its passion and style, the memorable

performances of its stars, as well as fabulous

costumes and lavish stage sets.

Evita is running from 17 to 22 March at the Palace

Theatre and stars Marti Pellow as Che, Madalena

Alberto as Eva Peron and Mark Heenehan as Peron.

Ahead of her March 21st gig in Manchester,

we catch up with music’s next big thing to

get her views on starting out, her career so

far, and debut album Peroxide.

ina Nesbitt - Experienced

singer / songwriter;

Festival Veteran; Radio 1

Regular; Album; EPs;

Headline tours; sell-out shows in America and Asia;

more than 20 million video views; over 137,000

Twitter followers … Age … 19.

It is a testament to the talent and ability of Nina

Nesbitt that she has achieved so much at such an

early age. It is a testament to the person that

despite, her rapid rise in the music industry, she

has remained a down-to-earth, pleasant and

genuine person, in love with music.

When you were first starting out you did a lot of

gigging in Manchester. Where did you start out

playing?

One of my first gigs was at the Roadhouse to about

50-100 people which was really fun. I played

Sound Control a few times. Lots of different

ones…. The Deaf Institute, Academy 3.

How did you feel going on for your first gig in

Manchester?

The first one was one of my first gigs. It was pretty

nerve-wracking, but exciting at the same time. It

was just me and my guitar. It was mostly covers. It

Page 29: Live Manchester Magazine March 2014

MUSIC

was probably awful singing (laughs) but I got such a

buzz from doing it and wanted to keep going.

Were any of the gigs particularly memorable?

That one sticks out for me. It was the first one

outside of Scotland. The last gig in Manchester was

the Academy and that was the highlight of the tour.

It was really rowdy and a really good show.

Do you prefer festivals or venues?

I enjoy festivals, when the weather is nice. You can

get a lot of new fans from the festivals. Everyone has

had a few drinks and is up for it and singing along,

not afraid to dance about—that’s quite fun. Venues

are amazing too. If it’s a headline show then the

people are there to see you, which is nice.

How would you describe your music?

Acoustic meets electric guitar, indie pop? I don’t

know. There’s not really a set genre. It’s lyric based.

I guess acoustic mixed with a bit of electric guitar.

What can we expect from your new album,

Peroxide?

Previews are available on I-Tunes. There’s a deluxe

edition—you can expect lots of songs— 20 songs!

And a mixture of genres and styles—ballads, up-beat

ones. A real mixture.

Who or what are your inspirations when you’re

writing?

Anything really. I write most about relationships or

growing up or anything I experience. I also like to

Page 30: Live Manchester Magazine March 2014

write in a social commentary style which I have

done for Stay Out and Selfies, two of my singles.

Anything that inspires me, I’ll write about. I like

all different types of music as well, so there’s not

just one influence, it’s just anything I hear on the

radio or walking about that I like.

Is there anyone you would particularly like to

work with?

If I could work with anyone right now, I’d like to

work with Nile Rodgers, because he is a musical

legend and a bit of a hit-maker. It’ll probably

never happen, but I’d love to write with him.

Who do you like to go and see live?

I’m playing the Isle of Wight festival this year and

Biffy Clyro are playing as well so I’m really, really

excited to go and see them. I’ve not seen them

before and I’ve wanted to for ages. I like to go to

all sorts of different gigs. I went to see City In

Colour in London last weekend and I thought it

was great.

You have accomplished so much at such an early

age. You’ve had sell-out show and tours, awards

and been named Vevo Lift Artist. Could you have

ever imagined that when you were starting out?

No, not really. I guess coming from a small village

outside Edinburgh I never really thought it would

take off for me unless I moved to London. I think

the internet has given me the platform to do my

thing and get it out to so many people. It doesn’t

really matter where you come from now, with the

internet anyone can do it. It has definitely been

helpful. But I’ve always wanted more and been

driving for more. I’m quite ambitious like that.

MUSIC

Page 31: Live Manchester Magazine March 2014

How are you coping with the increased media

attention?

I don’t really think about it too much. I just live a

pretty normal life which I have for years and try

not to think about it.

You’re very involved in the whole process, even

down to the T-Shirts. How do you stay so

grounded and so involved?

I wouldn’t say I’m a control freak, but I do like to

do everything ... I’ve always done it on my own

since I was independent and they just let me do

my thing and support it, which is really good. It’s

me singing it so I think it’d be weird if someone

else was having a major input. So I just have

people around me who support it and then I can

come up with it.

What are your aims for this year?

A successful album would be lovely. …. Play lots of

gigs … Go to Europe and over to America at some

point for a few gigs, get it started off there. Lots of

travelling and getting the album out to as many

people as possible.

Any words of wisdom for aspiring artists?

Just don’t give up at the first hurdle. The music

industry is so fast, and changes so fast that you just

have to be true yourself. It doesn’t happen

overnight—it’s a very, very long process. I’m still

nowhere near where I want to end up and I’ve been

doing it since I was about 15 so I think, just keep

plodding on.

Following on from her successful EPs, Nina’s

debut album, Peroxide (released via Island

Records) is out now and is being supported by a

whirlwind ten day European tour, which will take

in The Ritz in Manchester on 21st March.

The album was produced by Jake Gosling and Iain

Archer.

Peroxide is the most pre-ordered album in Island

Records’ history and has been greeted with

enthusiasm by fans.

With a clever social commentary and

experimentation between genres (Nina herself

describes her own music as acoustic meets

electric guitar indie pop) the album is set to

delight fans and in its debut week registered at

number 1 in the mid-week charts.

Featuring tracks such as Stay Out, Selfies and Mr C

as well as the collaboration with Kodaline (Hold

You) and an impressive 20 tracks on the deluxe

edition, this is a not an album to be missed.

It’s no wonder the half Scottish, half Swedish

singer-songwriter Nina has been described as ‘the

sound of young Britain’ by the Times.

At the time of the album signing, Peroxide had

already reached number 1 in the mid-week charts

and it was clear to see that she has amassed a

significant fan base—HMV was filled to the brink

with fans and they were overwhelmed.

So what did Nina’s Nesbians have to say?

Emily from Manchester on the album “Oh my god,

It’s so good. My favourite track is Hold You”. On

going to live show at the Ritz on Friday 21st March

“Oh my gosh, I’m so excited”

Katie from Manchester on the album “I think it’s

Fragmentary Ancestors: Figurines from Koma Land, Ghana

The Fragmentary Ancestors exhibition, currently running at Manchester Museum, explores the

historical, cultural and religious significance of the clay figurines produced by the people in Koma Land

in Ghana, West Africa, between the 6th-14th centuries AD. It is the first time that these artefacts will

appear in the UK in an officially approved display.

The title of the exhibit is in reference to the fact that many of the figurines were not discovered

intact. They were unearthed from mounds where they had been buried long ago by a people who,

until fairly recently, very little was known about.

The exhibited figurines were discovered in an excavation that focussed on two mounds discovered in the village of Yikpabongo. Very little is known about the people who inhabited Koma Land at this time and no link has been discovered between the population who inhabited the area over six centuries ago and the inhabitants of the area today. What is known, is that they were likely farmers who lived in villages, made use of iron tools and were possibly involved in trade in the region. Their fate remains undiscovered.

It is likely that the figurines themselves were used for a variety of purposes, from religious rituals to healing and medicine. The channels in some of the figurines (which most commonly took the form of animals – both real and mythological, bird figures and two-headed creatures) is also indicative of the figurines having liquid offerings poured inside. What is known, is that religious beliefs, traditions, healing and medicine are often inextricably linked in the study of African contexts and, as such, these unique figurines would have had an important role to play in the lives and beliefs of the people of Koma Land. It is believed that the mounds in which the figurines were discovered, were possibly shrines used to bury powerful, ritualistic objects. One anthropological theory also holds that, since the majority of the figurines were discovered in fragments, they may have held a spiritual link to a person, either alive or considered ‘alive’ as

ancestors. This would have given the clay figure a power, which, once broken, could be distributed.

Sadly, as awareness of the discovery of these unique artefacts reached the international arts market at the time, illegal excavations of mounds took place by looters seeking to discover complete, un-fragmented figurines that could be sold. Much work has been undertaken to combat this by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board together with others who hold a vested interested in the preservation of the mounds and their contents.

In the meantime, the people of Yikpabongo hope for a museum in which to house these inimitable objects and to help educate and develop awareness of their historical and cultural importance to the region. (Images courtesy of Manchester Museum)

MUSEUMS & ART

Last month saw the arrival of a new, grand exhibition, exclusive to

the Manchester Art Gallery. It features a collection of pieces by the

acclaimed Portuguese sculptor Joana Vasconcelos.

Vasconcelos, who is also running a concurrent solo exhibition at

the Tel Aviv Museum of Art until April, was born in Paris in 1971,

but now lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal. She exploded onto the

arts scene in 2005 at the Venice Biennale, one of the most

prestigious, avant-garde cultural institutions in the world,

responsible for promoting new artistic trends in contemporary art,

with a notorious piece called The Bride, 2001 – an enormous

chandelier made of 25,000 tampons! The sculpture was initially

displayed at the Arsenale, attracting much attention and

catapulting her into the public eye and the forefront of the arts

scene.

Since then, Joana Vasconcelos has gone from strength to strength,

her subsequent works and exhibitions gaining her further

international recognition.

The Manchester Art Gallery will be exhibiting over twenty of her amazing, large-scale creations, some of which are

being displayed in the UK for the first time. Expect an eclectic mix of works from large scale vehicles such War

Games, 2011 (a black Morris Oxford car filled with brightly coloured, squeaking, moving cuddly and plastic toys –

and covered in rifles!), to a specially commissioned textile piece which will cascade down three floors of the glass

atrium of the gallery in a tirade of colour, shape and texture. The piece was fashioned through knitting, crochet, the

use of a variety of different fabrics and is adorned with decoration in the form of beads, crystals and tassels.

The exhibition will also include works of kinetic art, where a moving sculpture has been created. The aptly titled Full

Steam Ahead will be displayed – a trio of pieces in the colours of the Portuguese flag (red, yellow and green), where

steam irons have been used to create the petals of water lilies which open and close to the hissing steam-release of

the irons, as well as a three-dimensional series of Crochet Paintings.

A number of smaller works will also be on display throughout the gallery, whose placement is designed to provide

thought-provoking links from Vasconcelos’s pieces, to the historical architecture of the gallery building and some of

the existing works of art in the gallery’s current collection.

particularly proud of the dialogue

established between Manchester Art

as the interaction between the city’s

history and traditions and other realities of

entirely different provenances such as

those specific to my homeland. Time

challenging and noteworthy shows of my career.”

Maria Balshaw, Director of Whitworth

Z-ARTS

A Brief History of Z-Arts, Hulme, Manchester

-Arts, previously known as the

Zion Arts Centre, is housed in one

of the oldest buildings in Hulme,

dating back to 1911. The building was

originally a congregational church,

attracting one thousand people in the

local community to its Sunday services.

The following decades saw the building

through two world wars and its usage

evolve and develop with the changing

times and social and economic

circumstances of the area. Not only did

it house the Boys Brigade, it also

provided refuge for people during the

Blitz. Pavarotti rehearsed there and

Damien Hirst was provided with

exhibition space.

By the 1960’s, the church congregation

had dramatically declined to around

twenty people. The once-thriving

church community building needed to

be rented in order to support itself.

However, it still managed to keep its

heritage in the arts and by the end of

the decade, both the Hallé Orchestra

and Choir and the Northern Ballet

Theatre had taken up residence there

and remained over the next couple of

decades.

In 1997, the idea for rebranding the Zion

Arts Centre came about and three years

later, Z-Arts was born. Their mission: “to

inspire and enable generations of young

people from Manchester and beyond to use

creativity to maximise their potential”.

Today, Z-Arts supports young people from

across the region, providing access to

creative activities from early years to

adulthood. The old church building now

helps young people to practice and

develop their creative talents in art,

drama, music and dance through a

variety of workshops that span all ages

and provide access to a range of fantastic

facilities including a 230 seat theatre,

gallery, a fully equipped dance studio, a

music studio, rehearsal and workshop

rooms and a café.

Z-Arts also hosts a variety of exhibitions

and performances. See what’s coming up

Other members of this multi-talented cast include: Jean-Charles Zambo, who specialises in House dance, New style and Break dance, capoeira and acrobatics. Sébastien Michard, a former elite gymnast who has now joined the world of theatre as an acrobat/aerial artist. Xavier Bouyer, trained in aerial straps and handstand performance. Jorge Bezzera Junior, a drums and percussion expert who has toured with some of the best world music artists, including Tupinago and Bebel Gilberto. Raul Enrique Hernandez Alvarez (REHA), a Cuban born, Paris-based musician who

studied at the National Art School. Kona Jean Kouassi, who studied traditional African dance from an early age while growing up in the Ivory Coast. He has been a professional dancer for twenty years and also has choreography experience. Rammo, a gymnast of ten years who enrolled at ‘Codarts’ in Rotterdam to join the world of performing arts. He specialised in aerial straps, but is also skilled in many other disciplines from floor acrobatics to Chinese poles.

Andrea Catozzi, a self-taught artist specialising in urban acrobatics, dance and capoeira. Andrea has performed around the world in Europe, South America and India. Jérémie Champagne, who has been practicing tap dance, piano, acrobatics, and dance since he was seven years old. Jérémie has appeared in many shows in Paris as well as the finals of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ in France. His most recent accomplishment is the choreography for the video ‘Groupies’ for internationally known DJ, Bob Sinclar. With such a talented and multi-disciplined cast, we are sure that Tap Factory will not fail to wow audiences everywhere! Eleven days, two hundred events and one

hundred different venues – this will be the 19th

Manchester Irish Festival!

Spread over eleven days, Manchester will be

celebrating the Emerald Isle, its people and

culture through a variety of live music, dance,

comedy, film and arts events.

The festival has grown year upon year with over

100,000 people expected to head to the city

centre for the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade

taking place on Sunday 16th March. This year, the

parade, now the biggest Irish Parade in the UK

and the third largest after New York and Dublin,

will be celebrating its 24th anniversary and feature

over seventy floats and banners representing all

the Counties of Ireland, dancing schools and a

host of other Community organisations. The

parade will begin at 12noon at the Irish World

Heritage Centre in Cheetham Hill.

The Manchester Irish Festival Market will return

once again, to be held in Albert Square outside

Manchester Town Hall. If 2013 was anything to

go by, we will see the return of plenty of

Guinness, ale, Irish Stew and Guinness basted

hog roast all to be enjoyed with large helpings of

live music and dancing – plenty of craic agus ceol

(fun and music!) for all!

Lawrence Hennigan, the marketing director of the

festival website (www.manchesterirish

festival.co.uk) said “This year’s festival is a

celebration of our achievements of last year

working with Tourism Ireland to promote Tourism

links between Manchester and Ireland. We were

delighted to receive the Mayo Diaspora award from

the Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister), the Attymass

Gathering award and to be named as the biggest

Gathering organised by any group in the UK by

Tourism Ireland.”

Pre-Festival activities start on Saturday 22nd

February with a sell-out Manchester Mayo Dinner

Dance celebrating the growing relationship between

the Manchester and Mayo communities. On

Saturday 1 March a special press launch of the

festival will coincide with the staging of the award

winning ‘Young, Gifted & Green’ Concert at St

Bede’s College which features over 100 performers.

Highlights include a special Budweiser sponsored

Irish Blues Festival headlined by Sean Taylor as

part of his UK Tour and an Irish Comedy Festival

sponsored by Jamesons. Plus an action packed

Art, Dance, Music & Theatre programme the festival

has an Educational programme which involves over

400 children. Its aim is to promote Irish Culture and

help develop Tourism links between Manchester

and Ireland.

Page 47: Live Manchester Magazine March 2014

Unlike other Irish festivals around the world, the Manchester extravaganza does not just celebrate St

Patrick’s Day itself on the 17th March, but instead it stages an eleven day party, which features a full

programme of Irish culture, comedy, heritage, literature, music, sport and theatre.

Other festival highlights include the Budweiser sponsored eleven day ‘Tradfest’ in Levenshulme village and

Burnage in a host of venues owned by the Levenshulme Pub Company, which this year is celebrating its

25th anniversary. The area is home to one of the biggest Irish communities outside of London. The event

will feature a special Mayo Gathering Photographic exhibition and a host of musicians, dancers and

singers. Other festival hubs which are putting on a full schedule of events include the award winning St

Kent’s Irish club in Fallowfield, the Chorlton Irish Club in Chorlton, O’Shea’s Irish Pub in the city centre and

the newly opened Irish World Heritage Centre in Cheetham Hill.

The Irish party continues in earnest right through

to Monday 17th March with events all over the

city, which range from special all day traditional

Irish music sessions to black tie dinners and

special Irish club nights.
