SVINGIN’ with SVEND — LIVE at FAT TUESDAYSDuring the summer of 1985 I toured Europe with my quartet and played many great jazz venues. One night, in between sets at the legendary Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen, a distinguished looking older gentle-men came backstage and introduced himself. To my amazement, he was one of my musical heroes and a true pioneer of string jazz, the great Danish violinist Svend Asmussen!

I was familiar with some of Svend’s recordings — his first session in 1935 with the legendary Argentinian swing guitar master, Oscar Aleman, the live “super session” with Stephane Grappelli, Stuff Smith and Jean-Luc Ponty, Violin Summit, and his LP with Modern Jazz Quartet pianist John Lewis, European Encounter. Svend told me that he liked the music I had written for the film King of the Gypsies and was familiar with my record with his good friend, Stephane Grappelli. I told him that if he ever wanted a band to play with in the USA, we were available! Svend made that dream come true and we toured together in the fall of 1986 and released an LP in 1987, Svingin’ With Svend, comprised of studio and live tracks. In 1988 we played the Berlin Jazz Festival — our last public performance together.

This collection of live performances was recorded during a six-night stint at Fat Tuesdays, then Manhattan’s premiere jazz spot. One of several special musical guests that week, my friend and mandolinist extraordinaire, Andy Statman, is heard here as well as the talented members of my quartet — Jim Kerwin (bass), George Marsh (drums and percussion) and Dimitri Vandellos (guitars).

Svend passed away in 2017, just three weeks shy of his 101st birthday. To celebrate our friendship, here are some musical memories from a great week of music at Fat Tuesdays nearly 35 years ago, — David “Dawg” Grisman
