Professor Asmussen has kindlyconsented to become patron mem-ber of AIEA. Below we publish ashort biography and a list of hispublications, from which we re-grettably had to suppress the hugelist of reviews, due to lack ofspace.Jes P. Asmussen was born on No-vember the 2nd 1928 in the smalltown of Aabenraa in South Jutland.Having obtained the Higher Gram-mar School Certificate there hewent to Copenhagen in 1948 tostudy at the Theological Faculty.In 1954 he left the University withthe degree of Candidatus Theolo-giae (egregie) and served for oneyear in Greenland as a chaplain ofRoyal Danish Navy. In 1955 hemarried Ellen Anette Diderichsen.From 1955 to 1 960 he was aschooltea.cher in Copenhagen. Classes of MembershipThere are two types of members,full members and associate mem-bers. Full membership, which car-ries the right to vote, is held byPatron Members and Regular FullMembers . Associate Membership,which does not carry this right, isheld by Regular Associate Mem-bers and Student Members. Thestatus of Student Members will bereconsidered when they notify theCommittee of the completion oftheir studies.II. SOME NEW MAJOR TOOLS FOR ARMENIAN STUDIES

The purpose of this lecturel is tobring before you some of the re-cent developments in the field ofArmenian studies that have led tothe preparation or publication oftools for scholarship. It is a sign ofmaturity in a field of learningwhen the need, long perceived, formore satisfactory instruments detravail can be filled. [n the past, ithas been the case that the majorprojects in Amrenian studies wereinit iated and executed almost ex-clusively in Armenia: One mightthink of the six volumes of theCorpus Inscriptionum Armenica-rum; of the publication of nume-rous volumes of manuscript colo-phons under the aegis of the Aca-demy of Sciences and the Matena-daran; of the series of concordan-ces of Classical Armenian writingspublished by the Linguistics Insti-tute of the Academy of Sciences asexamples of such major projects.It has been an interesting develop-ment of recent years that a numberof major projects have been under-taken abroad, very often withstrong support from institutions inArmenia are marked by the factthat, even where they are the workof single individuals, the projectsto be mentioned below have led to

the creation of new tools for Arme-nian studies. The cooperative pro-jects among them also witness thegrowth of communication betweenscholars in the field. This is ano-ther sign of maturity.

WORKS PUBLISHED ORABOUT TO APPEAR

1. Catalogue of the Manuscriptsof the Armenian Patriarchate inJerusalemIn 1991 the final, eleventh volumeof Archbishop Norayr Bogharian'sGrand Catalogue of St. JamesManuscripts was published. Thismarks the completion of a half life-time's labour, carried out by thisremarkable scholar; the first vol-ume of the Catalogue appeared in1966. Archbishop Bogharian's ele-ven-volume work makes the col-lection of manuscripts of the Ar-menian Patriarchate of Jerusalemthe first of the major collections tohave been fully catalogued. Thefinal volume contains the descrip-t ion of manuscripts nos. 3601-3890 of the collection, followed bya detailed description of l5 manu-scripts in the Treasury of St.James, which had, for various rea-sons, only been listed briefly in theearlier volumes. A series of usefulindexes follows of the contents,dates and proper names containedin this volume. Next occur indexesand keys referring to the whole

eleven volumes: of manuscriptswhich have been microfilmed; ofthe persons and institutions forwhom the microfilms were pre-pared; of manuscripts in foreignlanguages; of fly leaves in foreignlanguages; of fly leaves in Armeni-an; of old printed books includedin the collection; and of texts andof poems published in the vol-umes. Archbishop Bogharian pu-blished numerous unknown textsas he encountered them. This is abountiful comucopia, a fitting con-clusion to a major opus.

2. Repertory of ArmenianManuscript Catalogues and Li-brariesAn important work by BernardCoulie is the first of a number ofinstruments de travail being spon-sored by Association Internatio-nale des Etudes Arméniennes.2 HisRépertoire des bibliothèques et descatalogues de m.anuscrits arméni-ens has just been published by Bre-pols, Turnhout, in the series Cor-pus Christianorum. This book willbe extraordinarily useful to us all.It comprises the following parts:1. Répertoire de catalogues ou defonds de manuscrits arméniens(pp. I -2) - which presents lists ofcatalogues or collections of Arme-nian manuscripts.2. Catalogues spécialisés (pp. 3-7)- lists of catalogues of manuscripts

devoted to particular topics, suchas biblical manuscripts, illustratedmanuscripts, medical manuscripts,and so forth.3. Catalogues régionaux et natio-naux (pp. 9-l l).4. Catalogue topographique (pp.13-229) - this is the major part ofthe book, and it is organized bycities. In the entry for each cityCoulie gives the names of the rele-vant libraries, a bibliography of ca-talogues of Armenian manuscriptsin those libraries, the number ofmanuscripts in each, and some-times a brief history of the collec-tion. In the case of many catalo-gues, he indicates the shelf num-bers of the manuscripts they con-tain. In instances of old collectionswhich have been dispersed, oftenas a result of the events of the firstworld war, he also provides indica-tions, where known, of the presentlocation of the manuscripts. Thus,for example, under the entry forVaspourakan, he records that theold catalogue of Lalayan men-tioned 480 manuscripts. Of these,284 are known today to have sur-vived, 281 in the Matenadaran, Iin St. Petersburg, and 2 in the H.Kurdian Collection (presumably,therefore, now in Venice). A con-cordance of Lalayan's numbers forthese manuscripts and their presentnumbers is provided. I imaginethat, by its nature, this work willsee more than one edition and that,as new information becomes avail-able, it will be supplemented. It isalready a most impressive bookwhich will be most useful to us all.

3. Archbishop Ajamian's GrandCatalogue of Armenian BiblicalManuscriptsArchbishop Shahe Ajamian of theMount of Olives Armenian BibleCentre has brought out his GrandCatalogue of Armenian BiblicalManuscripts. The GulbenkianFoundation published this largebook which lists all ArmenianBibles, their contents, including allextracanonical writings, and con-tains extensive indexes. The Cata-logue records the existence ofmany previously unpublished writ-ings, particularly homiletic and ex-egetical in character. It is a crucialtool for the understanding of thecontents and development of theArmenian Bible, a mine of price-less information. Moreover, thiswork is the first fully detailed topi-cal catalogue of Armenian manu-scripts. Previously there have beensome lists (such as that of Rho-des3), but Ajamian's work replacesall such efforts for the Bible.

4. Classical Works in ArmenianTranslationA Repertory of Printed ArmenianTranslations of Classical Workswas prepared under the aegis of theCentre for the Study of the Trans-mission of Classical Works inOriental Translation, founded byProfs. M. Pavan and U. Cozzoli,

and the Istituto Italiano per glistudi Filosofici in Naples. It wasprepared by Constantine Zucker-man and ediæd and revised by thespeaker. The interest displayed bythe two sponsoring organizationsin these Armenian translations in-dicates the status gâined by Ar-menological studies in ltaly, verylargely thanks to the work of Pro-fessor Giancarlo Bolognesi and hisstudents. I quote some detailed in-formation from the introduction,since this work is of particular in-erest to participants in the presentworkshop:"The purpose of this short guide isto acquaint the reader with the pre-sent state of research on the an-cient Armenian translations ofclassical texts. It is primarily des-tined for those, not expert in Ar-menian, who nonetheless wish tobecome familiar with the transmis-sion of the classical tradition in Ar-menia. Such persons will find be-low a survey of the classical textstranslated into Armenian, as wellas references to translations ofthem into modem languages, whenavailable, and to studies in lan-guages more accessible than Ar-menian. More specifically, in Pre-paring this Repe rtory we had clas-sicists in mind, who might be curi-ous about the potential contribu-tion of the Armenian versions tothe knowledge of the text of theGreek originals. This kind of studywas inaugurated exactly a hundredyears ago by Frederick ConY-beare's works on Plato and on theAristotelian texts and has been

continued successfully by a num-ber of scholars, notably, in recentdecades, by Giancarlo Bolognesiand his students. It is not our aimto present the results obtained bysuch studies in detail, but rather tbdirect the reader to the books andarticles in which they may befound. Thus we are presenting abibliographical guide which wehope will fill a void in the instru-ments de travail presently avail-able.All the texts included in this sur-vey were originally written inGreek. No Latin text is known tohave been translated into Arme-nian in antiquity. All the texrs ex-cept one were translated directlyfrom Greek; the reader will notethe curious thirteenth-century at-tempt to translate The Elements ofTheotogy by Proclus Diadochusfrom Georgian. The definition of a"classical" text has been extendedfor the purposes of this Repertoryto its largest conceivable limits, yetit necessarily excludes the largestbulk of ancient Armenian transla-tions, to wit the Bible and Chris-tian theological texts.No complete consistency could beachieved in the choice of the texts.Thus we include David, the Neo-Platonist from Alexandria, but notBishop Nemesius of Emesa, theauthor of a popular treatise O nHuman Nature, although both areChristians and both belong to theclassical tradition of learning.David's Christianity barely markshis philosophy, while Nemesius'treatise is more a work of theology

than of natural science. Applyingthe same criterion to Christian ad-aptations of non-Christian texts,we list the mildly retouched Sen-tences of Sextus but not the thor-oughly Christianized P hy siolo gtts .In any case, the reader can make astricter selection himself and littleharm is done by our ening on theside of inclusiveness."tlne Repertory then contains a listof all published texts and transla-tions and major studies on Armeni-an translations of Classical works.The only transgression of this limitis an Appendix by Abraham Terianwhich deals with the Armenianversion of Philo. This was includedbecause of the importance of Philofor the tradition of the Hellenizingtranslations into Armenian. Eachwork included is discussed in somedetail with an evaluation of the sra-tus quaestionis of its study. TheRepertory does not extend its co-verage to works extant only in ma-nuscripts and much remains to bedone in this respect. Obviously,this Repertory does not include allworks of the Hellenizing school,because it only deals with thoseworks which are classical in cha-racter. Perhaps this Workshopshould consider supplementing itby a similar Repertory of the re-maining, predominantly Christianwritings which appertain to theHellenizine school.

5. Reverse Dictionary of Classi-cal Armenian.1993 has also seen the publicationof A Reverse Dictionary of Classi-cal Armenian edited by PaulJungmarur and J. J. S. rffeitenberg(Berlin-New York: Mouton deGruyter, 1993) which is a land-mark work for Armenian Linguis-tics. This book was chiefly writtenby Dr. Weitenberg based on thepreliminary work of his teacherPaul Jungmann. The book is com-posed of a General Introductionand three parts. Part I is a reverseindex of words; Part II is a seriesof Selected lists taken from thedatabase developed by Dr. Weit-enberg for the production of thebook; and Part III is a Reverse ana-lyzed list of Classical Armenianwords and morphemes. This workis a major contribution to Arme-nian linguistics and a credit to itsauthor.

PROJECTS UNDERWAY

There are various projects under-way which exhibit the same, broaddisciplinary character.

6. Album of Armenian Palaeo-graphyUnder the impetus of a "Workshopon Techniques and Priorities in theStudy of Armenian Manuscripts,"organized by Àrhus University forthe Association lntemationale desEtudes Arméniennes and held inSandbjerg Hall in Denmark in July1989, two projects designed to putthe study of Armenian manuscripts

on a more secure basis were en-dorsed. One is the preparation of aMaster List of Armenian Manu-scripts, being carried out by B.Coulie of the Université Catholi-que of Louvain and M. E. Stone,and the second is the proposedAlbum of Armenian PalaeographyT\e Album of Armenian Palaeog-raphy is designed to provide asound basis for the study of Arme-nian manuscript hands. The Arme-nian manuscript tradition is richwith colophons, and the place anddate of copying of very many ma-nuscripts are known. Our plan is toproduce a carefully selected set ofphotographic plates of Armenianmanuscripts which are preciselyidentified by date and place of co-pying and which represent therange of Armenian manuscripthands over the centuries. Such acollection of plates will form thebasis of all further studies ofArmenian palaeography.

Principles of the Project1. The manuscripts selected will bethose bearing genuine colophons inwhich, if possible, both the dateand the place of copying are ex-pl ici t . Manuscripts showing justthe date will be used only faut demieux .2. All specimens will be reprodu-ced in the Album in natural size. Ifthe manuscript page is larger thanthe book page, then only part of itwill be illustrated. For aestheticreasons, photographs will alwaysbe of the same side of a page, therecto.

3. The pages will be selected insuch a way as to give a representa-tive view of Armenian manuscriptwriting throughout its geographi-cal, chronological and typologicalrange. Additional photographs ofany particularly interesting decora-tive or illuminated letters useful topalaeographic analysis will beincluded, even though the primaryaim of the Album is to presentpages of text.4. A sample of writing in doublenormal size will be included foreach manuscript page, in additionto the full size reproduction of apage.Of particular interest, perhaps, isone particular computer applicati-on we are using. Each photographis scanned and then a sample al-phabet is prepared from the scan-ned page, all on the computer. Thesample alphabet is then printed.This technique obviates the ele-ment of human intervention, bydrawing or tracing, which was pre-viously needed.The preparation of the Album is ac-tively underway. It is being editedby the speaker in cooperation withProf. Henning Lehmann of ArhusUniversity and Prof. DickranKouymjian of California StateUniversity in Fresno. Sample pho-tographs have already been selec-ted from the collection of the Ma-enadaran, of the Venice Mechita-rists, of the British Library, of theChester Beatty Library and of Lei-den University Library and the Li-brary of the Armenian Patriarchatein Jerusalem. Currently, work is

continuing in the BibliothèqueNationale in Paris.

7. Leiden-Jerusalem ArmenianData-BaseIn a number of fields of learning,suçh as classical studies, the needhas been recognized to have largecollections of textual materialavailable in electronic form. Thisfacilitates the sophisticated studyof the texts, their analysis, the pre-paration of linguistic and philolo-gical studies, of concordances, andmore.It was with this overall aim inmind that the Leiden ArmenianData-Base was established in1982.The whole question, now under li-vely discussion, of the computeri-zation of the Armenian language,had to be broached by the Leidenproject years ago. The range of is-sues addressed extended from en-coding to laser fonts, from key-boards to special utility programsand more. The attack on these pro-blems, however, was only prelimi-nary to the assembling and proces-sing of a large corpus of texts inArmenian. That also has beendone, and the amount of textualmaterial continuously expands.An impressive amount of Classicaland Mediaeval Armenian textshave now been entered into theData-Base. Programs have beendeveloped with enable the mor-phological analysis of these texts,and their eventual publication asmorphologically analyzed concor-dances. In addition, an Armenianspelling checker has been devel-

oped, integrated with the morpho-logical analysis program.One current aim of the Data-Baseis to develop programs for the au-tomatic alignment of Greek andArmenian texts. This poses a com-plex challenge, but those of us herewho work on texts that have beentranslated from Greek into Arme-nian, can readily realise the impor-tance of such a program. It should,in the end, enable us to createclearly analyzed bilingual Armeni-an-Greek vocabularies which willbe most useful for students of theHellenizing school among others.A first work of this sort has beenpublished by J.J. S. Weitenberg inthe newly established series, DutchStudies in Armenian Language andLiterature. This is Parallel AlignedText and Bilingual Concordance ofthe Armenian and Greek Versionsof the Book of Jonah , Rodopi:Amsterdam, 1992. This book con-tains the following parts:a. The parallel Armenian-Greektext of the Book of Jonahb. The aligned Armenian-Greektext of the Book of Jonahc. Alphabetical list of words, Ar-menian-Greekd. Alphabet ical l is t of words,Greek-Armeniane. Bilingual Armenian-Greek Con-cordance of the Book of Jonah.Budget has recently been receivedto increase the activity of the Jeru-salem branch of the Data-Base.There the material prepared in [æi-den will be implemented on aMacintosh computer, suitable re-trieval programs will be develo-

ped, and a special study of theArmenian Biblical text will be un-dertaken. This latter will be donein cooperation with the Mount ofOlives Armenian Bible Centrewhich is currently preparing anedition of the Old Armenian Bibleunder the direction of ArchbishopS. Ajamian (see below).In the area of computerization, Ishall also mention two other devel-opments. The Association Interna-tionale des Etudes Arménienneshas developed a program calledTRANSLITERATE ! which is de-signed to solve the problem of thevarious Armenian keyboards in useon Macintosh computers, by en-abling easy translation of texts en-tered in one keyboard into the stan-dard of another. A second develop-ment is the preparation of a specialArmenian implementation of theprogram Collate, which has beendeveloped by Oxford UniversityComputing Services. This programwill collate up to 100 manuscriptsand produce a critical apparatus.Together with the new area of cla-distic analysis being investigated atOxford as a means of addressingthe question of stemmatics, thisnew instrument promises some re-lief for those involved in the taskof editing texts in Armenian.

8. Old Armenian Bible EditionInitiated by Archbishop ShaheAjamian, this project is well ad-vanced. I ts aim is to produce asingle volume edition of the OldArmenian Bible. The text will bethat of the Erznka Bible (Jerusalem

Ms 1925), while the apparatus willcontain collations from three orfour other major representative Ar-menian codices. The collations areclose to completion and the publi-cation is expected within twoyears. This edition will not replacethe full critical texts being produ-ced piecemeal in Armenia and a-broad (e.9., Zeytunian's Penta-teuch, Cox's Deuteronomy, Cowe'sDaniel, Amalyan's Maccabees,etc.). It should, however, replacethe edition of Zohrabian as a wor-king tool for scholars, as well asfulfilling national and ecclesias-tical needs.

I would like to conclude by men-tioning two further projects whichare of the same general character,and which are foreseen for theclose future.

9. Census of Armenian Manu-scriptsBemard Coulie and the speakerhave undertaken to prepare thiscensus which will cover all Arme-nian manuscripts known to exist. Itwill enable us to know exactlywhich manuscripts are locatedwhere, and will include manu-scripts in private hands as well asin public collections. As a by-pro-duct, we should produce a standardlist of sigla by which Armenianmanuscripts can be denoted.

10. Armenian Codicology andBindingsWork on Armenian codicology andbindings has been somewhat spotty

in the past. There have been somesignificant studies, but not syste-matic ones. Dickran Kouymjianhas been assembling material onbindings for some years, and it isto be hoped that we will see somemajor systematic studies emergingfrom this. Codicology has been onthe agenda of discussion of Asso-ciation Internationale des EtudesArméniennes and others interestedin Armenian manuscript studies,but no systematic work has yetbeen undertaken.Clearly, these projects bid fair torationalize some areas of Arme-nian studies so that scholars haveat hand instruments which will fa-cilitate and standardize much ofour work. That is extremely impor-tant, particularly considering theweight of the tasks lying in the fu-ture and the limited human andbudgetary resources available.It is clear to all of us, of course,that such projects do not replacethe work of individual scholars sit-ting at their desks working in re-search on texts, language, historyand art, to mention a few fields.They can, however, facilitate thatindividual scholarly effort. More-over, cooperative labours,can a-chieve projects beyond the capabi-lity of the isolated scholar. Thus,the production of these major fn -struments de travail reflects thegreat advances of Armenian Stu-dies in recent decades. The workof all of us will be better and morecomplete as a result.

ALMATHE ARMENIAN LIBRARY AND MASEAM OF AMERICA

An important centre of the pre-servation and promotion of Arme-nian culture is the Armenian Libra-ry and Museum of America, loca-ted in V/atertown Square, fivemiles from down-town Boston.Founded in 1971 as a "living me-morial to the Armenian heritage"ALMA has the following goalsand objectives. Firstly it maintainsan active program of collecting,conserving and documentingArmenian artifacts, books, textiles,archives and works of art. ALMApromotes an awareness and appre-ciat ion of the cul ture andcontributions of the Armenianpeople, through exhibits and diver-se educational programs. It seeksto provide a cultural resource forthe public and to create an environ-ment for discussion, study andresearch. Finally, it serves as anational repository and informa-tion centre on the Armenianpeople, their history and culture.The Armenian Library and Mu-seum of America resides in a threestory building. In the BedoukianHall, on the first floor, part of thepennanent collection is on display.It is ALMA's main exhibit gallery,and focuses on the art and achieve-ment of the Armenian people. TheLibrary occupies the second floor,a mezzanine from which the twen-ty feet high Bedouklian Hall canbe seen. This branch of ALMAcontains a collection of about11.000 volumes in English and Ar-

menian, containing periodicals,posters, incunabula, maps, calen-dars, sheet music, pamphlets, au-diovisual material, photographs,early sound recordings, docu-ments, and manuscripts. Amongthe many particular collections theOral History Archive contains awealth of information told bysurviviors of the genocide. On thethird floor, as well as on the sidegalleries on the first and secondfloors changing specific exhibitscan be seen.The holdings of the museum offera wide variety of items pertainingto the past and present of Arme-nian (and even pre-Armenian)culture. There are rugs, textiles,ceramics, religious art, coins, ffio-talware, stamps, costumes, geolo-gical and botanical specimens.Among its many collections, oftenbuild up throughout a life-time ofcareful acquiring and preservingby their donators, an outstandingfeature of ALMA's museum is theextensive textile collection. Thetextile center (as well as the libraryannex and the registration center)is climate controlled with the pro-per humidity, temperature and airquality according to professionalstandards.Another important component ofALMA is the Arthur T. Gregoriancollection of Armenian inscribedrugs. Mr Gregorian was the first todraw public attention to Armenianrugs as distinct from oriental and

has amassed the largest collectionin the world of these rare works ofart.ALMA's full time employed staffbeing very modest in size, the mu-seum relies for many of its activi-ties on the work of volunteers.ALMA issues a Newsletter that
