and organizers for the GrahamsvilleLittle World’s Fair are preparing foranother huge turnout for the eventthat attracts folks not just fromthroughout Sullivan County, but theentire Tri-State area.

Held this year on August 16th, 17thand 18th, in the more than a centurythat the Little World’s Fair has been incontinuous production, it hasbecome a part of the fabric ofSullivan County, and such a high pro-file event certainly requires a lot ofwork and preparation to pull off.

“It’s really kind of an ongoing thing,”offered Little World’s Fair Director andPresident Kathy Bender. “We startwith planning and strategy, meetingabout once a month beginning inJanuary, that’s when preparations

Only a week ago this pavilion was nearly empty, now these volunteers make it ready for the various animals that will spend fair days herewith their 4-H and farm families.

From left to right, Sean McAndrew, Cathy Bender, Jim Denman, Gary TerBush, MichaelGarigliano and Ken TerBush, and, standing in front, Diana TerBush, are busy getting thegrounds for the Little World’s Fair in Grahamsville in tip-top shape for the thousands of folkswho will attend on August 16, 17 and 18.

This barn has been home to the handiwork of the many artistic people who have enteredtheir creations hoping to win a top ribbon in the Neversink Agricultural Society’s annual fair.To find out more about the rules, policies, premium and prize information, and entry direc-tions, visit the society’s website at http://www.grahamsvillefair.com/premium_book.html

really start. Even immediately afterthe fair is over we get together andtalk about what worked and whatdidn’t, so it’s quite a long process…we aim to put on a world-class event.”

But much more is involved in thepreparations for the annual event. Inearly January, organizers begin solicit-

ing advertisers for the Little World’sFair program, entertainers get bookedin March, vendors are secured fromApril to June, and then work on thefairgrounds begins in July.

things over the many years thefair has existed, organizers willbe trying something new thisyear: Thursday night “CarloadNight.” It allows, for one night, for a carload of revelers to enjoythe fair and unlimited access tothe rides for one flat fee. It willbe held between 5–9 p.m. andrequire a $40 flat fee for a car-load of up to eight people.

And the Little World’s Fair isn’teven the only fair held on thegrounds, as the 4-H Fair (akaSullivan County Youth Fair) getsits start a little early on the 15thwith its renowned animal show.Organized by CornellCooperative Extension’s 4-HYouth Development Program, the smaller fair allows childrento have their work judged andpossibly garner them the Danishribbon awards they so covet.

The tractor pull will, as always,be a huge draw for folks, as willthe dozens of vendors who willbe on the grounds, but theentertainment acts and the

rides are always the most popu-lar of the tons of activities avail-able.

This year will be no different inthat respect as acts like KennyYoung Band, Hotrod, Roller CatsBand, Thunder Ridge,Somerville Brothers and manymore will be on-hand with aneclectic mix of music for alltastes.

Kids and families haven’t beenforgotten as far as entertain-ment is concerned either, as actsthe likes of the Catskill PuppetTheater, Matt Stevens Magicianand Balloon Artist, and theDelaware Valley Raptor Centerwill this year be presenting whatis sure to be the very popular“Close Encounters with Birds ofPrey.”

The antique car show is alsosure to be a big draw.

“We always aim to put on thebest fair possible, and this yearis no different,” said Bender.“We know people from all overare looking forward to this… ifthe weather cooperates this yearit should be big.”

Above, the Gary and Mary May Schmidt family of Forestburgh joined the many local fami-lies enjoying the fair last year. You’re apt to see your neighbors there, as well as people fromall over the tri-state region who make it a point to visit the Little World’s Fair yearly. In somefamilies it’s a tradition to attend – and that’s something to flap your arms about!
