Why should we care?Our earth should be our top priority because it’s the place that we liveThe air that we breath needs to clean for us to breath in the first placeThe earth itself should be clean because we grow our food in the soil, if that was dirty, what’s to say that we won’t get sick from that food?We need to take care of our earth so that later generations can enjoy the earth as it was when it was clean

How does litter affect the earth?

When we litter, it doesn’t just affect us, it affects the earth and anything that lives on the earth. Mostly wild animals get the brunt of what we do.

They mistake garbage as food and as a result they can choke, starve, or even just get stuck in it (like the turtle in the top left).

How does litter affect the earth?

Litter doesn’t just affect animals, it can affect us and the earth as a whole too. What we put into the earth can have serious consequences that we would later regret, so we should be aware of what we do to it. Littering can put different chemicals into the earth that can affect the plants, animals, and our crops.

What can we do to reduce litter/waste?

Recycle, this helps to reduce garbage in landfills (landfills create harmful greenhouse gases)Don’t pass litter, pick it up!Hold onto garbage until you can throw it away in a proper disposal unitClean up neighborhoods (when things are already clean, people are less likely to litter, they want to keep things looking nice)

Causes of litter

Problems caused by litter!When litter is on a sidewalk it could get washed away into storm drain that then lead into the nearest river or ocean. If the water becomes polluted from litter we can no longer use it for drinking water. Litter can be very dirty with lots of germs. How can we change ?#1 set an example by not littering.

#2 pick up one piece of litter every day.#3 pick up litter in front of your house.

#4 show your neighbors how to properly pick up litter.#5 make sure that your trash can lids are attached well.

#6 carry a litter bag in your car.#7 find out how you can plant flowers along a curb.

#8 Ask business owners to provide trash cans in front of their business with a sign – Please Do Not Litter.

Research and experience have shown that , litter is the result of result of individual behavior-choosing to litter or being careless in the handling of waste. And once litter is on the ground , it attracts more litter. A

clean community ,by contrast ,can discourage littering and improve community appearance and

quality of life.

HOW DOES LITTER EFFECT

officers regularly rescue animals trapped or hurt

by litter.

Preventable incidentsHere are some of the preventable incidents we have dealt with:

A fox cub with its head stuck in a wheel hub. A badger cub with a plastic can holder embedded

in its neck. A cat that lacerated its paw on some broken glass. A dog with its tongue caught in a discarded can. A hedgehog with its head wedged in an empty tin. A seal with fishing net around its neck.

Everyday objects can become hazardsBalloonsAnimals can eat them and choke or become impacted.

- Cut balloons up before putting in the bin.- Don’t release balloons as they can land anywhere.  

Chinese lanternsChinese lanterns , also known as sky lanterns, can seriously injure animals.

Containers and cansAnimals looking for food can get trapped in cans or injured by sharp edges.

- Clean and empty containers.- Pinch cans shut and cut containers in half.- Recycle where possible.

Elastic bandsThese can wrap around small animals and beaks of birds. If swallowed they can cause choking.

- Reuse bands when possible or cut them open before putting in a bin.Fishing tackleAnimals can get entangled in line and hooks can pierce skin or be swallowed.GlassBroken glass can cause serious injury and animals can get trapped in jars.

- Clean and recycle glass.Plastic bagsAnimals can climb inside and suffocate, or eat them and choke.

- Tie bags in a knot before recycling.Plastic can holdersAnimals can get entangled, and suffer deep wounds or choke. - Always cut the loops before recycling.
