Reading

Reading is making meaning from print. It requires that we:

• Identify the words in print – a process called word recognition (learn the Year 4 high frequency words and use phonics to read unfamiliar words)

• Construct an understanding from them – a process called comprehension (asking and answering questions related to the text)

• Coordinate identifying words and making meaning so that reading is automatic and accurate – an achievement called fluency

So, what exactly is phonics?

• Words are made up from small units of sound called phonemes. Phonics teaches children to be able to listen carefully and identify the phonemes that make up each word. This helps children to learn to read words and to spell words

e.g. s-a-t = sat

• "Writing" is the process of using symbols (letters of the alphabet, punctuation and spaces) to communicate thoughts and ideas in a readable form.
