Getting the “gamer” to READ!

I have found that this is a problem for boys more than girls but the first thing to do is convince the child that books can hold as much excitement as any video game. With my own son, graphic novels was the key to finding his inner reader. I started with novels that had video game characters he already loved then slowly started adding characters.

Starting with TV and video game tie in books

GirlsGirls in general are more open minded when it comes to books but still present challenges when it comes to incorporating variety. If I had a dollar for every time a girl checked out a non-fiction book about puppies or kittens I’d be a very rich woman. For me, I always try to encourage girls to read books with strong female characters. This world needs more Hermione Grangers and Luna Lovegoods.
