*Philips & Lite-On Digital Solutions Corporation (PLDS), a joint venture company of Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. and Lite-On Technology Corporation

Founded in 1975, Lite-On Technology has become Taiwan’s first electronic industry listed companies in 1985. The company has been in the automotive electronics and smart car fields for many years, especially in the head up display (HUD) and autonomous driving (AD) fields has received significant results; and into the OEM international manufacturers supply chain.

As for the HUD products, Lite-On Technology’s strategy was to set aside the low price competitive

market of after market, and to enter the relatively high world of OEM suppliers. In this endeavour, they had to face both the technology competitive threshold of European and Japanese manufacturers and the strict and long validation process necessary to enter the OEM market.

Lite-On Technologies has thus been investing considerable resources for many years; combined with the PLDS-based* automotive electronics upstream & downstream customer resource layout, this provided a considerable support for the company to enter the OEM market.

As Lite-On Technologies wished to offer advanced HUD integration solutions, with innovative and differentiating technologies including windshield and combiner display, with as streamlined optical simulation solution. Their technology development department has thus chosen OPTIS’ SPEOS for the analysis and design of their HUDs.

ABOUT LITE-ON TECHNOLOGY

It’s been a few years since the high-tech industry in Taiwan is facing the plateau in terms of consumer electronics growth, car networking, automotive electronics, electric vehicle-related applications have become the development of the industry’s vision.

Lite-On Technology SLA business group, SVA business department, dedicated to the smart car related products development, which indicates:

“In the past, we were using several different optical analysis solutions interactively, it took a long time for us to transfer a large amount of optical data into geometry or pictures. It often takes a week for us to prepare the customer communication report; and when the contents changed, the report would be changed again. Sometimes it is not easy for the customers to understand the details, especially in the analysis of the sun stray light, as they lack intuitive display.”

The technology development department has chosen SPEOS optical simulation solution for HUD analysis and design. Integrated into CAD software, SPEOS can assess HUD performance flexibly, by analyzing the distortion, ghost, optical volume and more functions. The mechanism of tolerance and optical interaction can all be done in one intuitive 3D platform with the SPEOS Variation Module (SVM), and provide intuitive graphical results. So, customers and R & D team in the optical and institutional staffs can quickly and effectively communicate.

After the SPEOS HUD Solution is introduced, the feasibility of the optical machine architecture can be evaluated in a few days by means of rapid ray tracing; and the interference & influence of mechanical variation and fabrication tolerance on the HUD virtual image can be carried out at the end. This process enables to accelerate the communication with other OEM suppliers.

“SPEOS intuitive 3D interface immediately shows the optical analysis

of data in the 3D environment; this significantly improves the effectiveness of communication and coordination

between the customers and the optical department in the company.”

FAST OPTO - MECHANICAL COMMUNICATIONTO SHORTEN THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

The common optical analysis software solutions used previously by Lite-On Technologies’ engineering team only provide lists of data. After reading those data, the engineers had to use mathematical operation tools, transfer the data into graphic reports and make an instruction for the rest of the staff members, as well as the customers. It often took a whole week to perform all these tasks and prepare the customer communication report.

SPEOS HUD Optical Analysis (HOA) qualified the quality of the virtual image of automotive head-up displays by providing optical metrics describing optical system performance such as dynamic distortion, ghosting, visual disparity, image sharpness,

… Within the CAD environment it provides intuitive visualization to analyse and understand advanced optical concepts associated with virtual image defects.

Fully automated, SPEOS HOA performs a complete analysis based on thousands of measurements for several driver sizes in minutes.

Thanks to additional plugins, analysis reports can be customized with specific car manufacturer’s optical metrics definition and acceptance criteria. Thereby numerical assessment of the optical system design is performed in accordance with car maker hud specification facilitating communication between all collaborators of a project.

To improve the overall design quality of the HUD system, a specific function, Optical Volume, renders the space required for the light path in 3D. After transferring this information into the CATIA V5 geometry, the engineers can measure and calculate the adequate space for the whole module. The optical system and the mechanism then fit seamlessly into the module.

Stray light analysis

INTUITIVE SUN STRAY LIGHTSANALYSIS AND VISION SIMULATION

With SPEOS’ powerful 3D function, Lite-On Technologies’ engineers easily set various solar locations to analyze sun-related stray light and the interaction of light on surfaces’ materials. They analyze the behavior of stray light on each surface of the module. The surfaces are organized in a pull-down menu so that engineers can easily identify any facet inducing stray light glaring spots. Then, they modify the geometric parameters of the components in the module and adjust them to effectively solve the stray light interferences caused by the solar light.

With the Visual Ergonomics module of SPEOS, Lite-On Technologies’ engineers easily create simulations combining real HDRI ambient light database - lighting of the sun – with the projected image of their HUD. This is useful to not only preview real human vision simulation effects in a given lighting configuration, but also to make

qualitative and quantitative analyses thanks to the figures provided by simulation results. The position of stray lights and the virtual image of the HUD are combined and displayed directly on the 3D CAD model in the CATIA V5 3D view, making it easy to perform comparisons when communicating with the customers. This image-based method significantly improves the development process of the products and shortens the times dedicated to communication and design review.

Using the SPEOS Light Expert module, it is easy to set up multiple solar locations and find out the sun’s position on different material surfaces. The Visual Ergonomics module combining HUD PGU and ambient light source, it helps to anticipate the glaring spot caused by sun stray light and HUD virtual image in real time.

ABOUT OPTIS

The single optical component of HUD is required a tolerance of 5 ~ 6 microns in the manufacturing process; therefore, it is very sensitive when it comes to combination and processing errors.

SPEOS Variation Module (SVM) integrates a powerful mechanical tolerance analysis function that includes assembly tolerance between elements, the position tolerance of a single element, the degree of circularity, and the tolerance on radius of curvature, which can all be the variables of the tolerance analysis.

Through the analysis of the six sigma (6σ) chart to find the largest number of combinations, with a very small amount of tolerance. They then input the relevant 3D geometry into SPEOS, for the optical simulation. SVM performs the tolerance analysis and generate a report to show how mechanical variations impact the HUD’s virtual image.

Thus, they can not only analysis and review the tolerance for the self-produced parts, but also for parts from the other suppliers, which is very helpful especially when it comes to windshield tolerance.

Thus, they can first define the circular variation or profile & concentric variation with 6 Sigma analyses in the early stages of development, and use this information as the input of SPEOS simulation to get a virtual image of the whole system. It is then easy for them to clearly define each component of the product and the specifications of other suppliers. Make the advanced assessment virtually and have the verification done for the product before the overall assessment of the car.The main goal is to define every component of the product clearly, also considering the specifications of other suppliers, for an advanced assessment of the final vehicle product.

APPLICATION OF TOLERANCEANALYSIS AND OPTICAL SIMULATION

“The influence of the mechanism tolerance and the optical effect is very large,” said the engineer, using the SPEOS Variation Module (SVM). “In the past, it was necessary to make the sample and then adjust the corrections each time, but SVM could clearly define the tolerances of each component in advance.”
