PART ONE: DESCRIPTION
The story ofTitserby Liwayway A. Arceo is a novel that illustrates the being or life of teachers that was
shown by Amelita and Mauro. It depicts the hardships of being a teacher but it also showcased its
benefits and fulfillment being such. Our society is divided into classes wherein some are poor and some
are rich people that was shown through different characters in the novel and the place where it revolves
(in the city and in the province). With this kind of situation, people from the rural area would want to
attain to have a better life and to be wealthy, which is one of the problems in the story that is realized
by the want of Aling Rosa to marry Amelita to Osmundo. Another one might be surrounding the issue of
being a teacher wherein it showed two faces of impression on being a teacher, one by Aling Rosa and
the other by Amelita.
PART TWO: INTERPRETATION
Arceo described with conviction the character or role of Aling Rosa to be an ambitious mother, to the
point that her desires must be considered, but behind that must also be a benefit to her. But one thing
really tested her, not only her patience but her personality as well. Like the line: "Sasabihin mo nga
bang hindi ka nasisiyahan? Talagang hindi ka makapagrereklamo dahil ikawang pumili ng karerang'yan. Pero mayparaan naman para makalayo ka sa ganyang buhay, kung mapapangasawa mo si
Osmundo..", the said line implies who she is.
Not only particular to teachers, but also in the general, the line spoken by Mauro: Kahit naanong
bagay na gusto mong gawin, at sapalagay mo'y nakagagawa ka ng mabuti sa kapwa mo hindi ka
mahihirapan. Sa kabila n'yon, maliligayahan ka," implies that everything you do, you must be willing to
do it, but if not just don't do it.
Arceo beautifully chained the events accordingly wherein she has also touched the values she needed to
imply while the happenings in the story go by. She also included views of what love is which was shown
through Amelita's parents (love in the family), Amelita's personal love (with Mauro and Osmundo), and
Amelita's love in her profession as teacher.
PART THREE: CRITICISM
The novel portrayed traditional Filipino family life, wherein in case that if I were a foreigner, I would
somehow not understand fully or some of the situations that happened in the story. But the good thing
is, it also patted me to open my mind to different personalities of people which I strongly suggest to be a
successful part for Arceo's delivery. For instance the character of Aling Rosa, while reading the initial
parts, you would feel anger towards her but towards the middle and end part, so would likely succumb
yourself to thinking, Why is Aling Rosa like that? Is she a good mother? Did she fulfilled her role? Arceo
put her character in reality basis, wherein situations like Aling Rosa'a portrayal really happens.
Our life is colorful, like what the characters in the story are, and Filipinos are fond of it, while reading it I
can also imagine the scenes happening and it's like watching a soap opera in TV. Her treatment is really
Filipino in nature, after a mishap the characters would likely solve the problem and some conflicts will
rise, but at the end it will be a happy one.
Vulgar language spoken by Aling Rosa is not offending, because as I've said Arceo featured reality in the
story.
Life wouldn't be life if there were no challenges, is also one factor that Arceo connects to the readers.
Realized through the protagonists and antagonists in the novel, hardships and trials faced by the
characters, and implications that would set your personality to test.

PART FOUR: INTEGRATE THE ACADEMIC AND THE PERSONAL
Here's a line in the story by Mauro: "Ang pag-ibig, Mang Ambo, ay hindiangkin ng iisang tao kundi ng
dalawa. Kung masisiguro n'yo na pinamimitawanan na ni Amelita ang bahaging kanya, baka
pamitawanan ko na rin ang bahaging akin para mapagbigyan ko kayo!" I really admired on how he
would fight for Amelita and it showed his true gentleman in that situation, wherein I came to realize that
I would also one day fight like Mauro in terms of his determination in his stands and views.
Another value is that "Money doesn't make the world go round", which Aling Rosa realized at the end.
Pondering that we, Filipinos are very fortunate to be people having good upbringing of values, maybe
because we are a country that is tested with different mishaps but can still stand up, which makes our
personality be stronger and more humble in accepting what really life is.
As an architecture student, I realized how important schools are especially in serving the development
of a community. In the present situation of the country, I can see that we have served education to
many of our children which makes me happy. Later in life, I would also want to contribute to building
schools for the children, and for the development of our country and people as well.
