Project Title: Kalaurgan House

Status: Heritage item listed within Wingecarribee LEP 1989 (SHI database number 2680406)

Address: 24 Browley Street, Moss Vale

Project Description:

The project involved making improvements to the courtyard garden located at the rear of the two storey late-Victorian dwelling and adjacent to the later single storey weatherboard addition, including the construction of a masonry wall. In addition, the timber flooring of the verandah to the weatherboard section of the dwelling was to be replaced.

Supporting Evidence:

Kalaurgan House is listed as a heritage item of local significance within the Wingecarribee Local Environmental Plan 1989. The original building—a two storey late-Victorian brick dwelling house—appears to have been constructed in the period between 1840 and 1850, whilst evidence suggests that the rear single storey weatherboard addition was constructed in whole or part in the period from 1850 to 1900. No historical photographic evidence of the property has been uncovered so no details of the original gardens exist. The existing courtyard area was in a poor state with overgrown brick herringbone paving and haphazard garden beds. The applicant had received development approval to wall the garden. The retention of the existing trees—a mid-sized pin oak and an advanced weeping cherry tree—were retained, and the walled garden paved in a light-coloured stone. The timber verandah flooring was completely replaced.

Date Commenced: October 2008

Date Completed: January 2009

Total cost of the project: $4,120.50

Local Fund Contribution: $2,000

Project Title: Sovereign Cottage

Status: Heritage item listed within Wingecarribee LEP 1989 (SHI database number 2680214)

Address : Argyle Street, Berrima

Project Description:

This house, one of the oldest in historic Berrima, was built in 1840 and does not have a damp-proof course. A mechanical ventilation fan installed some years ago beneath the floor of the dwelling has been only partially successful in providing adequate ventilation to prevent ongoing problems with rising damp, particularly to a portion of western wall. The project consisted of the ventilation of the western wall by digging a hole through the existing western wall at sub-floor level.

Supporting Evidence:

Sovereign Cottage is a typical representative of the small Colonial-Georgian style stone cottages found throughout Berrima, significant as one of the earliest residences in Berrima. Like many buildings of its era, it was built without a damp-proof course and the current owner has had difficulty in preventing rising damp throughout the original part of the house, evidenced by paint peeling from the lower part of the masonry walls in some locations. To help counteract the problem of rising damp, Council’s heritage advisor recommended that a hole be made to allow natural ventilation between the western exterior verandah and the interior sub-floor area of the building.

Date Commenced: October 2008

Date Completed: October 2008

Total cost of the project: $1,629

Local Fund Contribution: $814.50

Location of

Project Title: Mount Gibraltar Quarry Complex Walk information sign

Status: Heritage item listed within Wingecarribee LEP 1989 (SHI database number 2680154)

Address: Mount Gibraltar Reserve, Oxley Drive, Bowral

Project Description:

The project consists of the preparation of an information sign for installation at the F.J. Pope Quarry site within the Mount Gibraltar Quarry Complex. The sign is to assist in the interpretation of part of this significant quarry complex.

Supporting Evidence:

The Mount Gibraltar Quarries are significant as evidence of the quarry industries in existence from the 1860s. Mount Gibraltar, or “The Gib” as it is locally known, is a popular spot for bushwalking. The quarries add visual and historical interest to the natural beauty of the Gib surroundings. The sign is the first in a group of signs planned for the Gib and will assist locals and visitors alike in providing historical context to the clearly evident former quarries. The sign is part of a larger project to develop the Heritage Quarries Walk, a component of the management of the Mount Gibraltar Reserve.

Date Commenced: September 2008

Date Completed: May 2009

Total cost of the project: $1613.70

Local Fund Contribution: $806.85

Applicant’s Contribution: $806.85

Project Title: Bowral Uniting Church fencing

Status: Heritage item listed within Wingecarribee LEP 1989 (SHI database number 2680471 and 2680472)

Address: Cnr Bendooley and Boolwey Streets, Bowral

Proje ct Description:

The Church grounds form an important element in the historic streetscape of Bendooley Street which forms a central spine of the Bowral Urban Conservation Area. Part of the Church grounds fronting Bendooley Street was fenced with unpainted galvanised mesh which was a non-contributory streetscape element within the Conservation Area The project was to replace this fence with a new black 1200mm high/low spear top fence and to fence the carpark in Boolwey Street with the same materials.

Support ing Evidence:

The fence borders part of the Church grounds on Bendooley Street adjacent to the heritage listed Uniting Centre building, a Victorian single storey cottage which is an individual heritage item within the Bowral Urban Conservation Area. The Church demonstrated a need to maintain a fence in this location to discourage anti-social behaviour, but recognised that the existing fence did not contribute to the streetscape of this important heritage area. On the northern end, the Uniting Church fence meets an older style (possibly original) metal palisade fence on the boundary with the Bowral Memorial Hall and this was used as a guide to determine the appropriate style, colour and height of the replacement fence on the Church grounds.

Date Commenced: November 2008

Date Completed: May 2009

Total cost of the project: $14,725.89 + voluntary labour

Project Title: The Poplars conservation work—interior timber mouldings

Status: Heritage item of State heritage significance listed within Wingecarribee LEP 1989 (SHI database number 2680160)

Address: Old Hume Highway, Braemar

Project Description:

The Poplars Inn is a fine example of early Colonial Georgian architecture and was built around 1845. Originally designed and built as an inn, it was a popular restaurant destination in the 1970s and 1980s. Over recent decades its use has been neglected and badly in need of restoration. The new owner is undertaking a project of major restoration and as there is very little original fabric internally remaining, all of the skirting boards, architraves and door jambs require replacement with new materials.

Supporting Evidence:

The Poplars Inn has undergone several renovations and “modernisations” in the 20th Century, most of which were unsympathetic and a great deal of original internal fabric has been lost. The owner has sourced historic photographs of the exterior of the building and has conducted interviews with former owners to help determine the original layout and features of the building. Since all but a little interior fabric remains, new skirtings, architraves and door jambs required were required. The owner has sourced timber mouldings of Colonial style to reflect the style of the original building to restore the interiors of the building.

Date Commenced: January 2009

Date Completed: May 2009

Total cost of the project: $11,326.91
