Each year students and staff of LHC look forward to attending the annual snow trip, this year was no different.

Seven students and I were lucky enough to be able to join with students and staff of Kadina High Campus to make the extremely enjoyable 15-hour bus trip to the ski fields of Smiggins Hole, Perisher Valley and Blue Cow for a one-week adventure.

Don’t let the idea of a 15 hour bus trip fool you, as everyone was in high spirits and looked forward to the chance of inventing new sleeping positions interrupted only by the early morning stops at various petrol stations. Breakfast in Goulburn was a delight, a quick petrol stop and stroll around the park in Cooma meant only a little way to go until we hit the snow.

We dropped our bags at Vikas Ski Lodge in Jindabyne, our fantastic home away from home for the next six nights, changed into something suitable for getting to the slopes and then off we went to the Ski tube at Bullock Flat. The ski hire people couldn’t do enough to calm nerves, make the necessary adjustments to boots, skis, snowboards and all forms of personal snow gear and set us on our way to the Ski tube train which took us up to the slopes of Blue Cow and onto the snow we went!!

As lessons had been organised for us for each day we waited in anticipation of meeting our instructors and making those first death defying if not seemingly easy first attempts at standing up on one or two slim pieces of waxed timber and not falling off and hurting others or ourselves!

There was no easy way to it apart from just having a go… and everyone did. Resilience was the key, fall down, get back up and try again, repeatedly until skill levels were gained (bodies bruised) and competency was achieved. For some of us this took a bit longer than others. We laughed at ourselves and each other, helped and encouraged each other, cried (frustration mainly) but never gave up. And that was just day one!!

Back at our accommodation, we organised sleeping arrangements, had a magnificent meal, watched a movie or chilled in our rooms and everyone was ready for bed after what had been an extremely long and adventurous day.

The next five days ranged from glorious sunshine with light winds through to a blizzard where you couldn’t see 10 metres in front of you and a day of overcast windy conditions not really great for snow sports…but we continued on.

Lessons continued to improve the ability of all concerned with some members of the group advancing at an astonishing rate and others happy to plod along and get the basics right. What was important was that every day we turned up and continued to do something that for a few of the group put you right outside your comfort zone.

Skiing from Blue Cow over to Perisher Valley on Wednesday afternoon with the Lismore High Snowboard team was an amazing experience. There were some technical sections to navigate, fast downhills, tight corners and some rough terrain and various types of ski lifts which some had not been on before. We all made it from the experienced to the novice…lessons were paying off.

Our last 2 days were a bit bleak with strong winds and fog closing some areas but this did not deter many of the group. Off they went to lessons or to free ski and a chance to make the most of their last day on the snow. Some however had succumbed to tiredness and retired to the warmth of the café for hot chocolate or just to rest.

The bus trip home was similar to the bus trip down earlier in the week…long! Most of us were tired from the days skiing/boarding and from a long week on the slopes, so to sit on the bus and regroup, zone out to music and just relax or sleep was enjoyable. First stop Canberra for a food break then back on the bus for the trip north, stops at Karuah and Macksville broke up the intermittent sleep and before long it was time to hop off the bus, get our belongings together and go home…a hot shower and bed for most I think.

The accommodation at Vikas Ski Lodge in Jindabyne was a perfect place to stay for our group. The rooms are comfortable and cosy and are close enough to the shopping facilities in Jindabyne for our students to buy all the necessities they needed…two minute noodles, chips, drinks and other snacks!

The food for breakfast and dinner was plentiful with an enormous variety each day. Hot and cold food was available and if you didn’t have enough to eat it was really your own fault. Mine hosts, Charlie and Kerry and their staff could not do enough for our group and we look forward to seeing them again next year.

Our bus driver, Danny, was a wealth of knowledge and support on the trip. His local knowledge made getting to and from the snow each day much easier and his willingness to help with the smallest of items was appreciated.

The snow trip is a fantastic excursion and one that won’t be forgotten for a long time and on behalf of our group I would like to thank the students and staff of Kadina High Campus,

Mr Wallace, Ms Bolton and Mr Wiblen for their acceptance of our group. Their organisation and friendly attitude towards us and making the trip enjoyable for all was greatly appreciated.

Our students had a great time, learned some new skills and learned a lot about themselves and their ability to adapt to a different climate, solve problems, fit in with a new group of people and cope with the long days. These skills will help them in their senior years at school as well as life in general.

It was a pleasure to go away with a really well mannered, courteous, friendly group of students. Plenty of photos were taken over the week and I look forward to seeing them.

We would like to respectfully acknowledge the Elders past and present of the Wijabul Wiyabal people and other peoples of Bundjalung Nation. We acknowledge that they are the first peoples of this land on which our school stands.

Bentley Art Show Year 8 student Julian Thompson recently won second prize in one of the student sections of the Bentley Art Prize. Julian entered his rainforest etching that he created in his Visual Arts class in Semester 1. Julian was please to accept the award including a $100 cash prize in front of the whole school assembly recently. Mrs Myles, who announced the award, encouraged other students to enter competitions as Lismore High Campus students have had a great deal of success in the past in the Bentley and other art competitions. Congratulations Julian.

Jeans for Genes DayEach year, Australians unite by wearing their favourite jeans and out-doing each other with crazy denim outfits, and donating money to support genetic research. On Friday the 4th August, our school become a sea of denim in a united stance against childhood disease.

Every dollar raised on the day helps scientists at Children’s Medical Research Institute discover treatments and cures to give every child the opportunity to live a long and healthy life. Our school raised over $200 which assists in stopping brain cancer and to help researchers test new drug treatments in a laboratory and find out which ones might hold the promise of a cure.

Many major advances in children’s health have resulted from medical research including the demise of previously fatal illness like polio, smallpox and diphtheria together, we really can make a difference and give kids around the world the opportunity for a healthy start to life.

Thank you to all students, staff and parents who assisted in raising money for this great cause.

Pictured are some Year 12 students rocking their double denim, or triple denim like School Captain, Kendelle O’Reilly. The second picture includes five SRC members who coordinated the day. They are holding children’s jeans which they creatively collected money in on the day.

It was with great pride that we received NAPLAN results for 2017. I’ve been very proud of the way we have been able to achieve high growth each year across the various strands of NAPLAN. What was exceptionally rewarding was that our students in Year 9 had actually reached state average in the key learning strand of reading. This result is the culmination of the hard work of the staff and the students of Lismore High Campus. Our overall performance in NAPLAN has been continuing to improve since 2013.

The expected growth of students is a much more accurate measure of their performance rather than a comparison against state performance. The main reason for this is that expected growth measures how students should have expected to have grown in their performance in the intervening two years of NAPLAN testing. Our expected growth in 2017 is higher than last year’s growth. It is particularly pleasing that our student’s this year have been doing project based learning for the past two years and have produced the highest growth on the NAPLAN results.

We are also in the process of choosing new school leaders for 2018. Our current Year 11 students are in the process of undertaking the selection for School Prefects and School Captains. I would encourage all of our Year 11 students who are interested to become involved in this process.

We also had our school planning evening with over sixty parents, staff and students involved. I would like to congratulate Mr Chris Williams our Deputy Principal for leading the school planning process.

Deputy Principal’s ReportIt has been an exciting term with many sporting, extra-curricular and academic events taking place. A highlight for me has been starting to undertake the 2018-2021 school planning process. This has involved consultation and collaboration with our key stakeholders of staff, students and community. Each group met and brainstormed areas of likes, dislikes and recommendations for change. These ideas were then collated into areas that align with the School Excellence Framework and Rivers Strategic Directions.

Over 60 people attended the parent consultation evening at Lismore City Hall. We ate a delicious meal, had some great discussions and voted on the areas deemed as highest priority. The overleaf table reflects the areas identified and the numbers are indicative of the voting process. Data will now be collated and analysed to inform our new strategic directions. Thank you to all who contributed at the forums held.

A focus has also included professional growth of teaching teams to improve outcomes for students. KLA groups across the college are working together to enhance teaching and learning. Overleaf is a report from the recent TAS Teacher Collegiate. Lismore High Campus Executive Teachers recently attended a conference last weekend to work on strategic directions and positive growth.

Overleaf, is a new contract for the use of a new bike/scooter cage that has been established for the secure storage of these items. A $15 deposit for a key will be required from the student, and parents will need to sign the contract and return it to Mr Williams. Only students who have gone through this process will be allowed to access this area.

Parents need to monitor their child’s use of personal devices and social media. Unfortunately, there are predators that use these forums to take advantage of young people. A brochure on safe Snapchat use is also overleaf. There are parent flyers to support youths with several other forms of social media on the following webpage: https://www.thinkuknow.org.au/

Recently, the majority of our Year 10 students completed a five day block of work experience.

As part of our ongoing school-to-work transition program, students are encouraged to go into the workforce and experience the types of activities that they may undertake when they have completed their schooling. As a group, the Year 10 students and myself have been focusing on making informed decisions about subject selections for Years 11 and 12 - work experience plays a large role in the subject selection process.

Whilst on work experience students get to see first-hand the skills and knowledge that are needed to succeed in their chosen industry; they ask questions about qualifications needed and get to see where the knowledge provided by their school subjects will get them.

Our students went to many and varied industry areas including motor mechanics, pre- and primary schools, veterinary clinics, the animal rescue centre, allied health offices, cafes, music stores, gymnasiums, specialty stores, IT service providers, processing and engineering companies and hairdressers.

The consensus among the students upon return to school was that the experience was highly worthwhile and what they had seen and learned would be invaluable in future decision making. Some of our students also received part time job offers which is a really excellent outcome and proves to me that they must have shown great work ethic and initiative.

I would like to thank the students for their willingness to take part in work experience and to the many wonderful business owners and managers who believe in the work experience program and are willing to take our students and provide them with a great learning experience.

Well Done!

Name: Rebecca Mackenzie

What year did you finish high school? 2012

What have you been doing since leaving school?

I studied a Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Education (Secondary) at Southern Cross University and graduated in 2016. I majored in History and English. Since then have been working as a casual teacher at Lismore High School.

What are your plans/goals for the future?

I plan to travel Europe to see and experience the history and the culture I will be teaching about in the classroom. My goal is to have my own classroom, decorated with all my teaching and learning resources, books and maybe my authentically made medieval knight’s helmet; a place where my students are inspired and encouraged to achieve.

Where are they now?

Recently primary school students from of our P-12 Learning Community participated in The Rivers first ever Talent Development Program held in the Lismore High Campus dance studio. 23 students from 7 schools took part in the four week program that focused on developing our dancers of the future.

Each week, the students developed their understanding of dance and dance technique by participating in warm up exercises, exercises focusing on co-ordination and choreography. Students successfully completed a dance during the program and performed with lights and costumes in the dance room in the last session. I hope all who participated enjoyed the experience and I hope to see these students pursue dance through The Rivers Dance Ensemble next year. Auditions are in Term 4, more information to follow.

Thank you to Alyssa McDonald and Abbie Dillon in Year 9 for mentoring these students while they participated in the program.

Congratulations to all who successfully participated in the Talent Development Program 2017.

The Rivers P-12 Learning Community was very fortunate to have the opportunity for The Australian Dance Theatre (ADT) to run two workshops at Lismore High Campus on the 21st August. Over 60 students from 12 schools participated in this event.

Students were exposed to three fabulous professional dancers taking them through a two hour inspiring workshop. The ADT dancers shared their knowledge and skills with our students through a series of exercises developing our students’ technique and performance skills. Our students were lucky enough to learn a phrase from ADT’s current touring dance work ‘Be Your Self’ during the choreography session at the end of the workshop.

Thank you to parents and carers who supported our students getting to and from this event. Our students embraced this opportunity to learn from amazingly talented professional dancers. All students participated with enthusiasm, good manners and pointed toes!

A big thank you to Tom, Felix and Matt from ADT for sharing their knowledge and experience with our young dancers, they provided our community with a wonderful learning opportunity.

Chef Daniel Lange and Linda Lohver the North East Waste Education coordinator, together with Barb Jensen from Lismore City Council attended school on Thursday 17th August to discuss with Year 9 Food Technology students the Love Food Hate Waste project which is part of the NSW EPA’s Waste Less Recycle More initiative. Food waste issues were discussed before students participated in practical cookery demonstrations and then the preparation of salsa verde, pizza, frittata and minestrone soup. Daniel gave students lots of practical ideas on how to use food left overs to make delicious meals. Some of the student comments included:

“Having the fridge at the correct temperature of below 4C will keep your food fresher for longer.”

“You can use left-overs to make magnificent food.”

“The chef showed us how to position our hands while cutting the food.”

“We were showed useful ways to reuse foods into other meals, rather than chucking it out.”

“We waste 20% of our groceries each year.”

“We were given useful information on food waste.”

“The pizzas were great.”

“Individual frittata’s are good finger food for parties.”

“Salsa verde is a good dip with a unique taste.”

“Great chef, learnt a lot.”

“A lot of good food is thrown out all the time.”

“A lot of resources go into producing our food, too much to waste by throwing the food out.”

Today, many employers are looking for potential employees to have more than a qualification. Many want them to have specific attributes before they will consider them suitable for a job. The guide defines what those attributes are.

Work readiness is a mixture of three factors:

1 Values

2 Behaviours and

3 Skills

Values and behaviours can have different meanings to different people. The values and behaviours businesses are looking for in potential employees have been defined for a work setting. The level of skill needed, particularly around literacy and numeracy, will vary according to the skill level of the job. However, businesses have a minimum expectation of the values and behaviours an individual will bring to an organisation regardless of their age, previous work experience or the job they are applying for. At the same time, employers also understand that an employee will learn on-the-job and build behaviours and skills over time with the help of training and development, and support from their supervisors.

Values

Accountability - accepts responsibility for actions, and their impact on the business and others.

Continuous improvement - has high standards and consistently tries to improve own performance, and the performance of the business.

Honesty - straightforward behaviour with no deceit nor cheating. Is trustworthy, fair and sincere.

Knowledge - develops understanding, skills, and expertise. Is committed to growth and learning.

Respect - takes into account other people’s feelings, wishes, or rights.

Tolerance - willingness to recognise and respect difference and the beliefs, habits and practices of others. Work ethic - diligent and committed to the business.

Behaviours

- Adaptable - is open to new ideas and concepts, and pro-actively changes the way they work to stay effective in new work settings.

- Authentic - is true to own personality and values, while still working within the business’ expectations.

- Business-minded - understands all employees are responsible for business success, and therefore looks for opportunities to make the business better.

- Collaborative - shares knowledge and learning, works cooperatively with others, and works to build agreement to achieve an outcome for the business or client.

- Customer focused - understands who the customer is, what their needs are, and actively works to improve their experience.

- Flexible - effectively handles unexpected situations or last-minute changes.

- Globally aware - has an awareness and understanding of global interactions and is open to working with other nationalities and cultures.

- Self-aware - knows own strengths, talents and passions. Recognises areas for learning and development and learns from their mistakes. Has a good understanding of their role in the business.

- Resilient - bounces back when things don’t go as planned. Doesn’t dwell on failures, instead learns from them or their own mistakes and moves forward.

What ‘ Work Ready ’ Means to Business

Page 14: LISMORE HIGH CAMPUS NEWSLETTER · ISSUE 8 I TERM 3 I WEEK 8B I 2017 ... Seven students and I were lucky enough to be able to join with students and staff of Kadina High Campus to

14

Skills

Business literacy - ability to apply knowledge of the business environment and work processes/tasks to manage situations and achieve good outcomes.

Critical analysis - can evaluate a situation/proposal, identify possible outcomes, assess pros and cons, and determine the right approach based upon desired outcome.

Data analysis - collect and review data to identify trends, answer questions and test assumptions.

Digital technology - ability to use information and communication technology.

Literacy - ability to learn, read, write and communicate verbally.

Numeracy - ability to reason and apply numerical concepts, and calculate numbers or amounts.

Problem solving - ability to find solutions to simple through to complex issues.

Technical skills - specific to the job and gained through formal education.

Support Unit Textiles ClassMs Gray’s Support Unit class have been producing some great work this year. At the beginning of the year, very few of the students had ever used a sewing machine and now they are sewing with confidence. They have just finished making shoulder bags to take shopping.

Last term, each student made a “Pillow Pet”, in the colours of a different animal or insect. Well done to all the students.

On Tuesday 8 August 2017, TAS staff from across The Rivers Secondary College worked collaboratively to explore the use of STEM in teaching and learning, with a particular focus on the new Technology Mandatory curriculum.

Sally from Richmond River High Campus presented a session with the Home Economics staff on designing felt monsters which incorporate the use of stainless steel thread, linking electronic circuitry to produce LED special effects.

At Lismore High Campus, Ms Marianne Stickens facilitated a number of sessions which included: the use of a Festo Domino in projects, CO2 car racing, Electronics kits and computer coding.

It was a great opportunity for staff to share ideas and we look forward to meeting again in Term 4.

Celtic ThunderOn Thursday, 3rd August “Celtic Thunder” visited the school to talk to Year 8 History classes about Medieval life and weapons. The students had the opportunity to participate in sword play, take part in mock battles, dress up in medieval costumes and watch an archery display. They also heard bagpipes being played and were shown how to dress in a kilt.

It was a great opportunity to immerse themselves in the Medieval period and the students enjoyed the opportunity to see the Medieval weapons firsthand.
