Frequently Asked Questions-Webmail

Q: How do I get to Alfred State College's webmail page?

A: The main URL to use is: http://webmail.alfredstate.edu. You can also use http://mail2.alfredstate.edu. If you use a Computer Lifestyle Machine, a lab machine, or any machine that is part of the Alfredstate.edu domain, you can simply type: http://mail2. Also, you can visit the main Alfred State College intranet page at: http://web.alfredstate.edu and click on the link for webmail.

Q: What are the system requirements to use webmail?

A: Almost any computer capable of running Internet Explorer 5.x, Internet Explorer 6.x, or Netscape Navigator 5.x can be used to access Webmail. The recommended web browser is Internet Explorer 6.x or higher. Note that Windows 95 users will not be able to utilize many of the features of webmail.

Q: How do I log in?

A: The method used to log into Webmail varies according to whether you have Windows 9x, Windows NT/2000/ME, or Windows XP. Basically, if you find a text box asking for a domain, type in ASC. If you don't find a Domain text box prompt, type in ASC\username in the Username text box. Obviously make sure to type in your password in the Password text box. Note passwords are case sensitive; usernames are not.

Q: When I try to compose a message, a Windows FrontPage Installer message comes up. Why?

A: Because Webmail uses the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Outlook Web Access (OWA) interface, it can sense when FrontPage has been installed on the local computer. OWA offers a variety of new HTML editing features through certain FrontPage extensions. To resolve the issue, find the FrontPage CD requested, insert it in your CD drive, and press OK at the prompt. This will allow the installer to find the correct files and install them to your local machine.

computer. OWA offers a variety of new HTML editing features through certain Office extensions. Q: Can I use calendaring?

A: Yes. Calendaring is available. Note that any meeting requests sent to you that you accept will automatically be placed in your server-based calendar.

Q: Why does it take so long for Webmail to load?

A: The new Webmail may take longer to load than the older version. This is due to the dramatic increase in features and capabilities included in the new version. Although times will vary, a 56Kbps connection should take approximately one minute to load Webmail. If you are using Alfred State College's dial-in system, the maximum connect speed is about 30Kbps - expect Webmail to take approximately two minutes to load. If you find the load time using Alfred State College's dial-in excess, it is recommended you obtain Internet Services through one of the local providers who can provide 56kbps or higher connection speeds.

Q: I can't seem to get Webmail to work. When I go to the Webmail web site and type in my username/password, my system stops responding. How can I get this to work?

A: First, check to see if you have a personal or corporate firewall. Webmail uses Session cookies and DHTML; if a firewall does not allow these types of access, then Webmail will not work. If possible, disable the personal firewall and try Webmail again. If it is now functional, you will need to change the settings on the personal firewall software until it works with Webmail.

Q: What can I do when the message "Error: Access is Denied" is displayed after I enter my Username and Password?

A: First, check to make sure you entered the Domain name in the separate text box or before your username if no text box is present. For instance: if your username is "windmere" and there is no Domain text box, you would type "asc\windmere" (without the quotes). If you are still having issues, please call the Help Desk at 4357.

Q: I don't see my question answered here. Who can I ask?
