SKILLS FOR LIFE

The Year 9 Textiles class were

busy in Semester 1 learning some

practical new skills, like putting in

a zipper and sewing buttonholes,

as well as updating what they

had learned in Years 7 and 8. The

students then enjoyed designing

and making their own cushion

covers, and sewed some stuffed

animals after they returned to

school late in Term 2.

EXECUTIVE REPORT

A big welcome back to our school community in Term 3, one we hope will be without the disruption of the pandemic. I have been walking around our classrooms, and there really is a different, very positive and enthusiastic feel for teaching and learning this term. With Education Week upon us, it is very much a time of celebration of all the great things students achieve. The construction phase of our school is in full swing, with major works developing nicely. Visitors to the school would see the improved access to blocks for students with additional needs, and the major changes to our school hall. The hall has not only undergone a major cosmetic change, but we have also refurbished our lights and sound system, to really support and drive the performing arts at the school into the future. This week, we will be starting the application process for our 2021 School Leadership Team. Students will receive information about this, and the interview process will conclude in the next couple of weeks, so they are ready to lead from Term 4. It will be a very important year for the school, with the postponed school centenary occurring and a return to the outstanding experiences and opportunities that we offer here at The Rivers Secondary College. As we return to normality, please let us know what is happening in the school community. We relish the opportunity to reward students for the great things they achieve outside of school, whether it be sport, arts or volunteering. We want to showcase that Lismore High Campus is a community, where we achieve, respect and support each other. Have a great term, Kirt Swanbury Deputy Principal

COLLEGE LEADERSHIP UPDATE

In 2019 we gained approval to fill the executive principal role of our College on a twelve-monthly rotational basis, whereby each year one of our campus principals steps up into the role. This year Mr Davies is fulfilling the role and Mrs McGrath has stepped up to relieve as principal of Kadina High Campus. In 2021 Mr Williams will take on the executive principal role, and Mr Swanbury will relieve as principal of Lismore High Campus. We will continue to strive for excellence in educating the next generation of leaders and ensuring our young people become positive and active contributors to our community.

Multi-tasking? Myth or reality? It all depends on who you talk to… Ask any student and they will tell you they can multi-task with ease. Do homework, watch TV, listen to music and check their phone all at the same time, no problem. Ask the academic researchers though and a different story emerges. Dr Larry Rosen, Professor of Psychology at California State University, explains that what is actually occurring in this ‘multi-tasking’ is ‘task switching’. Instead of doing two things at once, students are actually switching their focus from one task to another and back again, in a parallel fashion, at high speed, resulting in them staying on task for an average of only 65% of the time period and for a maximum of only 3-5 minutes at a time. Constant task-switching results in it taking much longer to complete the individual tasks not just due to the interruptions, but also because there are delays as the brain switches between tasks and refocuses. This brief bottleneck in the prefrontal cortex delays the start of the next task and the more intense the distraction, the longer it will take the brain to react. A study conducted by Dr Rosen’s team sent varying numbers of text messages to students in a lecture then tested the students on the content of the lecture. The results were surprising, it was not the number of interruptions that negatively impacted results, it was the time taken by the students to react to the interruptions. Students who responded immediately performed worst on the tests. Those who considered when to check the message and respond (ie in a part of a lecture they deemed less relevant) performed significantly better. What we can learn from this is that students need to become more aware of their ‘task-switching’ and make conscious decisions as to when they choose to shift their focus – instead of being enslaved by their technology and at its constant beck and call. We need to teach students that this constant mental task shifting (even thinking about the technology has the same effect as actually checking the technology) takes oxygen and brain activity away from what they are learning. We need to convince our students that it is okay and even necessary to wait, that they don’t have to respond immediately and do have the ability to delay their check-in with the cyber world. It is all about learning that we can control our selective attention and choose to ignore distractions.

Thank you Mrs Rose for all that you do. The interesting, varied and fresh food made with care and attention is appreciated. Name Wendy Rose Known as Wonderful Wendy Position Canteen Manager AKA Captain of the Canteen Manager of the Meals Employed since 2000 Valuable member of the team

Year 8 Cooking The Year 8 cooking class finished last term off with a two course meal. Students made Penne Boscaiola and Fruit Pastries. Everyone did a great job at getting two foods cooked and ready at the same time. Mrs Baker TAS Head Teacher

FRENCH For Year 7, it has been a journey of discovery in their first and second language. We have explored the many French words that have found their way into English over the centuries and discovered there are 1000s. Students have also enjoyed exploring the meaning of their names, noting their roots in Latin, Greek and Hebrew to name a few, and their many variations in multiple languages. They have also explored their background nationalities which, combined with past students, now stand at close to 50 from every continent. Semester 1 culminates in cultural research of a French icon, e.g. sports star or team, artist, scientist, fashion designer, art form, gallery or monument. The twist this year was that instead of writing about their topic in English, students used model sentences to describe it in French. The first part of the task all students filled out an imaginary enrolment form for a student exchange, including details such as name, age, nationality, date of birth and school. They learn to recognise words such as email, address and telephone are the same in both languages. They then imagine that whilst on exchange, they create a resource for their school back home in Australia. Here are some of their submissions. À tout à l’heure Madame Biasion
