It is also an opportune time to acknowledge District Governor Anthony and Lion Diane, together with his Cabinet for the work and effort they have put into last year, with a particular mention for Lion Diane’s efforts with the “Coins for Kids” initiative, a project I hope will continue to grow this year. I know every District Governor heads into their respective year with great excitement and hope around what can be achieved. For me, I hold the same high levels of anticipation and excitement. I believe the District has the talent and determination to achieve some really special outcomes for Lions Clubs, members, and the people and communities we seek to serve. We have already seen some of the potential in the District at our recent incoming officer training seminars. An initiative was the naming of the types of projects directly involving the community by the attendees and this short segment produced an amazing list, which I will share with you in the next Newsletter. This exercise just reinforced to me the extent of which Lions are so actively involved in the community. The seminars were well attended, well organised and well catered for and if this is indicative of the year ahead, I will have an extremely satisfying year. My thanks to Brian Buchanan and PDG Geoff Angus for organising these events, and all the presenters. Shaping up YOU may already have noticed that the shape of this Cabinet looks a little different than in previous years. Lions Clubs International has asked us to think about how we serve our clubs, members, and communities in fresh ways this coming year. These innovations include streamlining our Cabinet and sharpening our line of sight on those important few things that will make the most difference for others. If I think back to every successful team I have ever been part of, a big reason for that success has been ability for all to be clear about the really important things, or aims, that the team came together to achieve, and I would like to share my aims for this year with you here: • We are recognised as a great team all working for each other and all working for the District to enable Clubs and Members to serve effectively; • We have lifted the bench strength and capability of Lions across the District through support and innovative ideas; • Communication between District, Clubs and Members, new and older, is the best it has ever been; • District is sought after as a partner by Clubs seeking to be even more effective in what they do; • The number of Lions able to contribute to community service continues to increase through new clubs and stronger existing clubs; • We have extended the reach of Lions within the District for the benefit of more people; • Lionism in our District is renowned for quality leadership, fellowship, and involve- ment in meaningful community service; • We have a lot of fun as a Cabinet team. Possibilities are endless I AM thrilled to think about the possibilities for our District and what we can achieve for others in the coming year. In particular, I would be delighted if, in time to come, you were able to look back on the year and one you can say I have grown even more as a Lion, being part of a great team, providing meaningful service to others, and having a good bit of fun. ARE we losing the plot? This is a question put to me recently by a

Past District Governor and it set methinking. Our motto is “We Serve”, but arewe really serving the folks in ourcommunity? Since I joined Lions therehave been many changes, and this is how itshould be, but the change which worriesme most, is the change in our attitude.Take a moment to think about your Club, and its attitude to the community, or whatis more important, the community’sattitude towards your Club.

Nowadays, in a very commercial world,we tend to see things in terms of dollarsand cents. Has this type of commercialattitude become part of your Club? Pleasedon’t misunderstand me, money can helpus to help others but as I have said before, you cannot solve every problem by simplythrowing money at it. Your Club’sapproach to fund-raising should be a largepart of your activities, but it should have abalance. Our every thought should not bedirected at makingmoney, and sadly I havevisited Clubs where this is the onlyconsideration given to any suggested newproject. In one of the Clubs I visited, a newproject was being discussed, and one of themembers immediately said, “We won’tmake much money out of that”. Is this theattitude we want to encourage in Lions?

It would appear that in some cases thedays are long past when we becameinvolved in used spectacle collections, collection of corks for cord blood, visits tothe elderly, maintenance assistance forthose living alone. Why are these things lesslikely to have a place in our work with thecommunity? Can it be that they are notprofitable?

I appreciate you will point out that weare not getting any younger, but can’t yousee this is where we should increase ourefforts to recruit younger members. As anolder Lion, you may not be able to dothings of a practical nature which you mayhave done some years ago, but you canuphold the spirit of Lionism through youradvice and encouragement of youngermembers.

The Lions organisation was neverintended to be solely a financial collectionand distribution agency.

I WILL be taking over the role of CabinetSecretary from PDG Neil Brown this year andI would like to take this opportunity of thank-ing Neil for the unbelievable amount of work hehas put into the role over the past few years. He, and ably assisted by his wife, Val have

spent untold hours on Lions business and with-out their efforts the District would certainlynot have run as smoothly as it has.I wish him well in his new challenge as

Director of the Districts Global MembershipTeam in this year’s Cabinet.

With new procedures introduced by LionsClubs International and coupled with a newCabinet structure in the District as a result ofthese changes, this will put a lot more onus onClubs, Zone Chairmen and Directors to meetthe administrative requirements of the District. In line with these changes there will be anincreased and expanding use of technology andin particular from my perspective the use ofemail as a means of communication. I look forward to working and meeting with

you throughout the year.

MY name is Bob Hovenden and theLions Eye Health Program is veryimportant to me. Some years ago, havingreturned from a holiday to Adelaide andKangaroo Island, I wastaking my dog for a walkwhen I noticed that theoncoming headlights werefuzzy and appeared to be“blotchy” too. When Iarrived back home Iremembered some LEHPbrochures, which I had been given andhad put away. After reading them again, one particular brochure seemed to fit myvision problem. This convinced me to make an

appointment with an ophthalmologist tohave my eyes checked. He talked aboutpressure behind my eyes and gave me aletter for my usual doctor. When mydoctor read the letter and gave me a bloodtest, he diagnosed that I was diabetic. I

have been able to get my condition undercontrol and my eyes have improved a littleas well.

If it had not been for some unknownLion putting LEHP brochures into myhand at some Lions event, I could havebeen in a worse situation today. This iswhy I support the Lions Eye Health

Program and encourage yourClub to get behind the LEHPmessage of regular eyeexaminations to save sight. Weneed to spread the message inthe community because manypeople with diabetes may not

have been diagnosed yet and may notknow that diabetes can affect their vision.

CHELSEA & District Lions Robert Spicer,Bernie Slagtman and Ann Eldridge happilygreeted the news that the Club Project, LionsVisual Independence had been unanimouslysupported by the delegates at the LauncestonMultiple District Convention in April tobecome a Multiple District Category BProject (Foundation).Having met Robert and Bernie at the 2008

MD Convention in Melbourne, Ann wasimpressed with what both were doing helpingto bring groundbreaking technology to theblind and visually impaired. So much so thatshe decided that Lions needed to becomeinvolved, by whatever means.Ann first encouraged her Club to adopt

Visual Independence as a Club Project, which quickly happened.Following that, through theDistrict, Lion Ron Smithbecame involved and guidedthe project through theprocess that has seen theinitiative go from ClubProject to District andMultiple District Projectwithin 14 months. Welldone! Now to the first article

from Lions VisualIndependence FoundationInc., also known as LVIF:

So what is LVIF, andwhat do we do?LVIF is a Foundation thatseeks to assist vision-impaired people who are on a low income, toacquire adaptive equipment/technology thatwill greatly improve their independence, andhopefully, quality of life. The ID Mate is the first such piece of

technology which is a talking, hand held barcode scanner. It throws out a web oflaser/light, much like a supermarket checkoutscanner. It operates by pointing the scannerend at the item to detect the barcode. The IDMate will read out a basic description of whatthe item is from the database of over 2.2million items! These items include suchthings as food, music, DVDs, medications, pharmacy products, and some generalmerchandise, such as seeds, cottons, fertilizers, etc. The wonderful part of the IDMate is that if an item is not on the database, you can record a message against the scannedbarcode, then every time you purchase orscan that item it will read out the originalmessage you recorded. Just imagine what thiscan do for a person who can no longer readprint or use magnification of any type!As a totally blind person, and one of the first

recipients of this technology in the country, itgave back my independence. I can choose myfood, my music, my clothing and I have the

ability to do daily tasks without constantlynagging my carer, family or friends.By gaining this level of independence, my

pride and emotional state are lifted to a levelthat I have not experienced in a long time.Over time, LVIF hopes to introduce other

technology that will give blind people ahigher level of independence, not only in thehome environment but also outside of thehome environment. Watch this space …For now, look after those eyes! For tips on

how you can do this go to www.lehp.org.au

Can you help us?ON another note, LVIF is experiencing alarge amount of interest from the blindcommunity and our Lions Clubs across

Australia. We are receiving manyapplications for sponsorship. With thiscomes much work, in fact, too much for thefew volunteers that are managing the day today running of the project. So I am putting the call out for committed

volunteers to help us, and experience the joyof helping blind people gain a greater degreeof independence. Some of the volunteer tasks are as follows:• Database administrator.• Grants seeker.• Client support officer.• Electronics’ repairer.• Club Liaison. If any of this work takes your fancy or you

would like to know more contact BernieSlagtman on 03 9853 9880, Ann Eldridge on0488 906 552, or email [email protected] you would like to know more about the
