Car technology is rapidly increasing. Smart-phone connectivity, high-powered entertain-ment systems, navigation, interactive sys-tems feedback, driver responsive performance - the list of advancements goes on. The software used in cars is getting more complicated - and more connected.

All of these applications let grow the band-width requirements. In response, automotive manufacturers are adding more and more computer-based systems, applications and connections. All these things pass in addi-tion to implement the Ethernet standard for automotive applications. For a standard data communication standard 100Base-T1 and 1,000Base-T1 apply for datacommunication over a twisted pair cable.

For a single pair unscreened data cable, the Open alliance specifies following HF parameters:

IMPEDANCE• Z = 100 ± 10 Ohm

INSERTION LOSS• IL (db/m) 0.02 at 1 Mhz, 0.09 at 10 Mhz, 0.14

at 50 Mhz and 0.20 at 20 Mhz

RETURN LOSS• RL (db) 26 at 1 Mhz, 29 at 50 Mhz and 27 at

100 Mhz

DIFFERENTIAL MODE ATTENUATION• LCTL (db) 46 at 1 Mhz, 40 at 50 Mhz and 34 at

200 Mhz

PROPAGATION DELAY• ≤ 6 ns/m
