It was indeed the Mediterranean landscape, mild climate and warm, well-drained soils, where figs and lemons flourish, fruit trees abound, and tobacco, chestnuts, walnuts and almonds are harvested, that convinced the Romans to build so many villas in the Pfalz. Each mansion had of course its own wine- pressing hall.

During the reign of Charlemagne over the “Holy Roman Empire” the Pfalz was his wine cellar, supplying not only the emperor’s table wines as well as the coronation wine. As one moves south along the “German Wine Route” through this veritable Garden of Eden, the number of castles increases and the landscape becomes more rugged and diverse. The region has always been considered the vegetable and fruit belt of Germany, which besides the influence of neighboring France, has led to its being the culinary capital of the country. There are various Michelin and Gault Millau rated restaurants and many other exciting surprises waiting for the tourists to discover.

The Riesling grape predominates in some parts of the Pfalz, producing very big and powerful wines with flowery overtones. These wines often have a dry finish and are decidedly preferred by local restaurateurs, who serve them to great advantage with modern German cuisine. In other parts of the Pfalz, the clasical Burgundy family of grape varieties has been planted with great success. At the present time many younger wine-growers are focusing on the production of remarkably fruity Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) red wines. Dessert wines with great depth of character and nuances of exotic fruits are also characteristic of the Pfalz.

Around the turn of the 19th century the German wine Liebfraumilch was considered to be among the best wines of Europe. Many unscrupulous wine producers took advantage of this German brand wines popularity and produced poor quality wines ruining the reputation of the original Liebfraumilch product.

Christoph Hammel, a wine producer and enthusiast wishing to restore the “Liebfraumilch Icon” produces a high quality Liebfraumilch combining the traditional German grape varieties Müller-Thurgau, Scheurebe and Kerner. The result, a white wine cuvée impresses with typical and rich fruit aromas, a well-balanced, harmonious acidity and complimentary, delicious sweetness.

The Diehl winery is located in the south of the Pfalz region. Wild sweet chestnut trees, normally only found in southern Europe, grow on the hills on the edge of the Pfalz Forest. Figs, kiwis, lemons, almonds and apricots all flourish on the eastern slopes, where they are protected from the wind and enjoy many days of sunshine, giving this area an almost Mediterranean feeling. With their know-how, hard work and passion for wine the Diehl family is committed to producing top class wines. Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio) is in essence a white variant of the red grape Pinot Noir. This Grauburgunder’s good palate weight and subtle varietal character makes it an excellent partner for seafood. Discover the aromas of pineapple and dried fruits and try this wine with oysters, shellfish, white fish and salads.

Riesling How does it taste when the German grape Riesling is vinified at a Palatinate estate by a Japanese enologist? If you want to experience this intercultural exchange you should try this wine! It comes from the well-known wine-village of Deidesheim, where the winery Josef Biffar was founded in 1734. Since 2013 the estate with its beautiful buildings, has been in the care of Fumiko Tokuoka. Starting her career in wine research at renowned Geisenheim University, she has worked as an enologist for several German wineries for over two decades. At Deidesheim, she not only produces her own wines now, but also brings the culture of her native country to the region by opening the high end Japanese restaurant Fumi on location at the winery. Peach, apricot, citrus – these are the typical Riesling aromas you will find in this elegant wine. Its fruity character, soft residual sugar and fresh acidity make it a perfect partner to all light dishes such as fish or fresh vegetables. By the way: We like this wine so much that we made it part of our “BASF Exklusiv” collection!

Riesling For over 250 years the families at the Kimich estate have been dedicating their lives to the growing of wine. Five generations of the Kimich family contin-ued the life work of Andreas Kimich, who founded the traditional winery in 1758 in Deidesheim. Since 1973 the winery is run by the Arnold family.

The Riesling grapes are from the vineyard Deidesheimer Langenmorgen which is situated on eastward facing slopes with intensive early sun-shine and cooling down period in the afternoon on red sandstone soils. The name (Langenmorgen) consists of two parts. ‘Lange’ refers to its longish shape and ‘Morgen’ to a formerly used measure of land. This Riesling is a fresh, almost sparkling wine with typical aromas of citrus and juicy peach. In the mouth you will feel a nice balance between a little bit of residual sugar and a refreshing, mouthwater-ing acidity – enjoy this wine with light cuisine or dishes with a little bit of chili spice, which will be perfectly balanced by the sweetness of this Ries-ling.

dry Weiß- burgunder (Pinot Blanc)

Founded in the 1960’s by Edmund Lucas, the Lu-cashof winery also manages the vineyards of the nearby parish winery. Edmund’s son Klaus and his wife Christine continue the tradition and have re-cently established a beautiful hotel and new cel-lars with a nice tasting room. The exceptional quality of the wines is proof of their efforts.

This youthful and fresh 2016 Weißburgunder pairs very well with seafood and poultry and is also an excellent companion to pasta with a creamy sauce. This wine is perfect for lovers of cool cli-mate white wines searching for an alternative to Riesling: fresh, elegant, crispy, but with a moder-ate level of acidity.

sweet Rieslaner The winery Bernhard Koch is located in the small vil-lage Hainfeld, in the southern part of the Palatinate. The winery has a wide range of different wines, all displaying an impressive high level of quality.

Rieslaner is a cross breed of the Silvaner and Riesling grapes that was first discovered in Veitshöcheim, Fran-ken 1921. The grape is rather unforgiving, it often blooms poorly, ripens late and is prone to botrytis. Growing Rieslaner is a gamble, some years can be a complete loss of harvest but some years, like this vin-tage, the winemaker can extract the most fantastic concentrated wines. The summer and fall of 2015 were very warm, which allowed the grapes to reach high maturity and created this perfect dessert wine. The wine is dominated by aromas of ripe apricots and honey. It is mouth filling with an intense taste of honey melon, completed by a refreshing acidity.

The winery’s historic terraced vineyards are among the last preserved of their kind in Palatinate and are consistently managed organically. Gentle handling of the soil through little use of machinery, a high degree of manual work and a careful expansion of wines in the cellar are a matter of course. While the 18 hect-ares of some of the best Palatinate soils have always been part of the winery’s assets, significant invest-ments have been made to modernize the ancient sandstone-cellars. The cellar now has state of the art stainless steel tanks equipped with modern tem-perature control technology and new custom made wooden barrels. With its fruit aromas, roasted notes and the acidity, this Grauburgunder is an elegant par-ing to grilled food. This wine is one of our favorites and we were all really impressed by the quality.

“Being a good winemaker is not about doing a lot of things. It is about making the right decision at the right time”, says young winemaker Christian Nett. He is one of the rising stars in the Palatinate winegrowing area. Together with his close family and a team of motivated young professionals, he has led Bergolt-Reif & Nett from a small village winery with local customers to a nationally recognized winery featuring super quality wines.

Our exclusive cuvée is a blend of five powerful red grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Mitos, Cabernet Cubin, Merlot and Lagrein. The wine has been aged in wooden barrels for 18 months and therefore you will not only notice aromas of dark berries and plum in your glass, but also some spicy oak-flavors. With its strong tannins and full body, this wine is perfect for your next barbecue or for dishes with red meat and strong flavors. dry Pinot Noir As it was typical for the southern Palatinate region, the Becker family ran a mixed use farm for many generations, with vineyards, some animals, a still and apple, pear, plum, cherry and mirabelle trees. In the middle of the 20th century, it became apparent that the soils and slopes at the edge of the Palatinate Forest offered excellent growing conditions for outstanding wines. Ever since then, wine making has been the profession as well as the passion of the Becker family. In 1973, Friedrich Becker Sr. filled the first bottles with the fox on the label, which became, in a very short time, their trademark. For old friends of their wines, and now for many wine connoisseurs around the world, this label stands for unique wines with uncompromisingly high quality. Friedrich Becker Junior, son of Friedrich Becker senior is continuing the production of high quality wines now under his own label “Der kleine Fritz” (the little Fritz). His wine label shows a wild boar, describing that his wine style is a little more unconventional and wild than his fathers. The “Wildwein” (wild wine) Pinot Noir is an elegant Pinot Noir with typical aromas of cherries and dark berries. Nevertheless the taste is rich with soft oak notes, and it has definitely some grip. It partners perfectly with Barbecue ribs.

The Franken wines are a pleasant surprise to those who are accustomed to the soft gracefulness and accommodating acidity of the German wine regions. Nestled in the beer drink-ing state of Bavaria, the Frankenregion is affected by the ex-tremes of a continental climate with harsh winters, hot sum-mers, and generally unpredictable weather all year round.

The yields are therefore very much lower than those of other regions, the wines leaner and with a more expressive acidity.

Moreover, the regional regulations have specified that dry wines be exceptionally dry. Furthermore the Bocksbeutel bottle is a characteristical attribute of Franken wine.

The land of a thousand hills, Rheinhessen, has been producing wine since ancient Roman times. As the largest wine region in Germany, Rheinhessen has gained recognition all over the world. It has become the heart of the German wine trade in part thanks to the German Wine Institute that is located in Mainz. It is important to mention the great geographical and climate conditions in this region that enhance the wine growing characteristics. Because the region is protected by rivers, the Taunus hills and the lush Oden Forest, the vineyards of the Rheinhessen are protected from extremely harsh weather and lending itself to a variety of different soil types.

Marlborough is by far New Zealand’s most important wine re-gion. Situated at the northeastern tip of the South Island, this dry, sunny region produces around three-quarters of all New Zealand wine. It is particularly famous for its pungent, zesty Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. The regions soils are based on gravelly soils which are common on the river terraces, and silty loams which can be found in the hills. These soils are excellent for viticulture because of their rapid drainage and low fertility. The vines are forced to work hard for hydration and nutrients, meaning that they focus their energy on the production of small, concentrated grapes, which translates into intensity of flavor in the finished wines.

In this offer we have two different products from the renowned Austrian wine maker Bertold Salo-mon – this Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand and the Grüner Veltliner from Austria. Two prod-ucts from the same wine maker but continents apart! The intercontinental joint venture “Salo-mon and Andrew” is the result of the New Zea-lander Christopher Andrew and Bertold Salomon friendship. They share the passion for wine and bonded during Christopher Andrew’s practical training at the Undhof winery in Austria.

The wine region Marlborough is perfect for grow-ing distinctive Sauvignon Blanc’s. Abundant sun-shine, with warm days and cool nights, enhances the development of delicate fruit aromas. This Sauvignon Blanc displays notes of grapefruit, red peppers and tropical fruits like papaya and man-go. The taste is refreshing, with a hint of lemon and a soft surprising sweetness in the finish.

The historic city of Krems is surrounded by steep terraces of grape vines. The unique climate and terroir with the Danube River moderating the effects of the cold Alpine winds provides perfect growing conditions for the Grüne Veltliner, Austria´s premier white grape varietal.

For many years was the wine region Kremstal shadowed by the popularity of the wine region Wachau. The Kremstal wines were just recently rediscovered by wine lovers and wine connoisseurs from all over the world. A new generation of Kremstal winemakers developed a new dynamic and a strong self-confidence in their wines. The wines produced in the Kremtal today reflect the new profile of the wine region and impress with a diversity and quality which competes with the wines of the Wachau region easily.

For the last 225 years, Salomon Undhof has pro-duced white wines from the best terraced sites along the Donau with fine minerality. The winery specializes in chrystal clear wines. Salomon Undhof’s wines are found in some of the best restaurants around the world, so it was not a big surprise to us when in 2016 “Wine & Spirits” Mag-azine selected the Salomon Undhof winery as one of the 100 best wineries in the world. The winery is bordering the eastern part of the “cultural world heritage site” Wachau situated in the Austri-an wine appellation Kremstal DAC. Grown on loess-terraces owned by the parish of Krems, this is a classic racy Grüner Veltliner. Vinified in tradi-tional way, this wine was originally used as altar wine during the celebration of the Eucharist. We think you will enjoy the aromas of elderflowers, white pepper, pear and white peaches.

Bordeaux is one of the most important wine regions of France and synonymous with fine red wines throughout the world. Located not far from the Atlantic coast, with the largest sand dunes in Europe, the vineyards border the Dordogne and Garonne rivers which join together to form the Gironde. Bordeaux was one of the major French ports until the early part of the 20th century. The reason why all Bordeaux shippers speak English with a British accent originates from the fact that the whole region was under English rule for four centuries. Most of the Bordeaux red wines are a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Château du Retout is located in the in Haut Médoc appellation in Bordeaux. The phylloxera crisis of the late 19th century and WWI brought a great deal of damage to the vineyards in Médoc. This lead to some smaller vineyards being abandoned and many small Medoc estates disappearing com-pletely. This is what happened to Château Re-tou-Rosset even though it had been classified as Crus Bourgeois. The estate only came back to life in the 1950s, when it was acquired by the Kopp family. The wine “Esperance” is a typical Médoc cuvée based on Cabernet Sauvignon, which is rounded by some Merlot and Petit Verdot. The 2014 vintage is very harmonious and the aromatic bouquet reminds you of red berries, plums and dark chocolate.

The Rival has a strong, fruity bouquet reminiscent of berries, and is rich and smooth on the palate. This wine truly per-sonifies the modern Bordeaux style. The wines of Burgundy are stars in the international wine world: Names like La Tâche, Romanée-Conti or Corton- Charlemange make the hearts of wine lovers beat faster. The vineyards of this famous region are located in the middle east of France and stretches from Chablis in the north, to Macon in the south. Beaune, famous for its wine auction in November, is the capital. What makes Burgundy so renowned is the perfect elegance you only find in wines of this region. The predominant red grape is Pinot Noir, which makes light bodied, but still well-structured red wines of high finesse. Burgundy’s white grape Chardonnay might be known as a common every day drinking wine in other regions of the world – but the winemakers of Burgundy know the art of giving this grape the most complex and seductive aromas!

It is beyond doubt one of the most elegant red wines of the world and you will find some of best examples in its traditional region Burgundy. The Bourgogne winegrowing area is subdivided into several appellations: Whereas the white Chardonnay grape is the main star at the appellations of Chablis and Côte de Beaune, the best vineyards sites for Pinot Noir are located at the Côte de Nuits area. This is where the small 21 hectares family winery of Bertrand Ambroise is cultivating its vines – the perfect place for the best Pinots! This Bourgogne Rouge is of bright ruby color and shows aromas of fresh red cherry and raspberry. Some spicy flavors like licorice and cedar have been added by oak maturation. This also gives the wine a smooth mouthfeel. We would recommend to pair it with lamb or fowl dishes.

South FranceLanguedoc is France’s biggest wine region, with approximate-ly 200,000 hectares. A quarter of the French vineyard acreage. It has a variety of climates and a matching variety of wine styles. Vines grow both along the Mediterranean and in the mountainous inland. People are often amazed, considering the warm and dry climate, that also high quality sparkling, dry white wines and even great pinot noir wines are produced here. The mountains and the winds cool the vineyard sites en-abling the talented producers to make wines with startling freshness. Once a source only for cheap bulk wine, Languedoc is now proving its ability to make wonderful terroir wines at very reasonable prices.

In many Spanish bars the guests only pay for the wine. The tapas – wafer-thin slices of ham, olives or a piece of tortilla – are provided free of charge. The quintessential wine pairing with tapas is a powerful vino tinto (a term synonymous with red table wine in Spain). Red wine in Spain it typically bold in flavor and no wonder, since the vines have to put up with extremes: intense sun during the day, cold temperatures at night and little water.

The Tempranillo grape copes with this the best and is dominant in Spain, one of Europe’s most important winegrowing areas. It produces a wine that appears to have the intensity of the hot Spanish climate within it and needs time to breathe and unfold its full, saturated opulence.

The grape vines are growing at an average altitude of 600 meters and the vineyards particular microclimate are characterized by a low yearly rainfall of approximately 250 liters per square meter. This creates very specific conditions for the grape vines and contributes to the high quality of these wines. The stony soil and clay originating from the “La Sierra de Armantes”, are ideal for wine growing.

This wine embodies to perfection, the experience accumulated by five generations using the most modern production systems. The grapes are harvested manually, after maturing the wine for 12 months in American, European and French oak the aromas of the wine reached their perfection. The wine has a wonderful cherry red color. The nose shows notes of cherry and blackberry with spicy aromas like cinnamon and vanilla. Hints of chocolate and liquorice complete the impression. The taste is long and structured. Pair this wine with red meats, cold cured Iberian meats and cured cheeses.

Long famous as the source of port wine, the Douro is now also renowned for its fine, rich unfortified wines, both red and white. This is one of the wildest, most mountainous and rugged wine regions of Portugal, cut through in deep twists and turns by the River Douro. Defying gravity on the steep slopes along the banks of the river and its tributaries, the vines are planted in poor, schistose soils. Man has engraved his own contours here – in the centre of the region, the historic, narrow, stone-walled vine terraces have been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while elsewhere, modern terraces are wider, buttressed by steep banks of earth.

The winery Fattoria Nittardi is located in the Maremma district in the heart of Tuscany. In the 16th century, the property was owned by the famous artist Michelangelo Buonarroti. He recognized the potential of the soils and climate and produced his own wine. He even extended a yearly gift of a couple of bottles to the Pope in Rome. Today this remains a tradition of the estate carried on by the Frankfurt art dealer Peter Femert, and his wife Stefania Canali-Femfert.

The name of this BASF Exklusiv wine was inspired by the azure blue sky of the Maremma region. This red wine blend of Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese is compelling, with flavors of cherry, cassis and blackberry. A pleasant and balanced oak completes the blend. Germans love bubbles! Actually our beer and wine-drinking nation is also the largest sparkling wine consumer worldwide. Round about 4 liters per person are enjoyed in one year – therefore it is no surprise that some German wineries have specialized in producing fine sparkling wines. Among them winery Wilhelmshof, located in the village of Siebeldingen in southern Palatinate, is definitely a first class producers. The family-run estate only does a small production of approximate 40 000 bottles a year but still they have been awarded “best sparkling wine producer of Germany” countless times. Their Blanc de Noir is made of Pinot Noir grapes, a variety that is also widely planted in Champagne region. After vinifying the white-pressed juice, the wine undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle (so called méthode champenoise) and this is where the magic happens: The carbon dioxide resulting from the fermentation dissolves into the wine and – voilà – the bubbles are in! This fruity and creamy Blanc de Noir is your perfect aperitif to enjoy at special occasions or just every day.
