Recalling physics and its kinematics lessons Linear Motion is a motion
subjected to straight line or one dimension only. In the same way if we
talk about linear motion bearings which is also known as linear motion
guide ways or linear slide is an essential component in machine tool
whose main function is to provide a smooth movement in machine and
due to this high accuracy and precision is achieved. It requires rolling
components which are balls and rollers.
There are various types of Linear Motion Bearings which are:
• Sliding contact linear motion bearings: - It has a wide range of
applications as it is the most simple and cheapest bearings which has a
greater coefficient of friction as compared to other types of bearings.
So they are less consider in precise positioning applications. A thin film
can be obtained with the help of these bearings.
• Rolling element linear motion bearings: - It has a lesser friction
coefficient than sliding contact bearings as it utilize rolling components
such as balls and rollers by placing them between relatively moving
objects. Because of its advantages over sliding contact bearings it is
applicable in the machines where high accuracy and precise is needed.

• Hydrostatic or aerostatic linear motion bearings: - It is required
when we need extremely accurate operations, it is very expensive and
difficult to manufacture as it does not have any mechanical contact
between its elements. It has a forcibly supply of pressurized fluid
between relatively moving objects by keeping one of them floating on
the fluid. It is basically classified into aerostatic or hydrostatic by the
fluid which is used.
• Magnetic linear motion: - With the help of its attracting or
repelling force it keeps one of the relatively moving objects floats. It has
a limited applications as due to electromagnetic force it is highly
expensive.
The linear motion bearings are in great demands as:
• It has highly accurate precise positioning as here the friction
contact is the rolling contact between two moving objects and the
coefficient is 1/50 traditional contact.
• It has a long life and high motion.
• Possibility of high speed of motion with low driven force as it has
very low frictional resistance so, it requires less force to move the load.

• It can be easily installed, lubricated and can be interchangeable.
• It has loading capacity in all vertical or horizontal directions.
The linear motion bearings has a wide range of applications as they are
used in CNC machines, heavy cut machines, lathe machines, molding
machines, Grinding machines, etc.
