Learning Intentions

1. To learn about the elements of design, specifically, line.

2. To see and capture the element of line in photographs.

3. To use the element of line to create powerful images with digital photography.

Line is One of the Elements and Principles of Design

• Part of the Visual Arts Curriculum

• Used by artists/photographers to make their art/photos stronger, more powerful– The ‘language’ of the visual

arts

• Line is simplest of all the Elements of Design– Early mark-making

Line• In art, line is defined as a moving dot• suggest rhythm, create patterns, indicate

directions and show structure

Page 5: Line

Line can simply be an edge

Page 6: Line

Any series of lines creates pattern

Page 7: Line

Line as Direction• line helps the viewer's eye travel around the picture– lines say, "Go here. Look at that. Stop. Move on."

Line as Connection• straight, curved, bent or zig-zagged, it goes from one

place to another

Line as Structure

• Line can divide a photograph into smaller areas

• Provides a basis to support the other elements and link them together.
