I created the branding for a fictional Calgary based company. The company works in conjunction with the city parking authority. There is a high price for leaving a vehicle in city parking for a long period of time. If a vehicle brakes down in a city lot Parkaid will come to the vehicle and fix it or tow it to a repair shop.

I related the branding for Parkaid to that of the existing city parking branding, while making it unique and recognizable in it’s self. The colours and typeface relate to the Calgary parking identity but the other elements help make it unique utilizing a car symbol in a state of being broken and then being fixed.

80P is a video game blog that was launched earlier this year. I created new branding for them as they have started to grow. The co-founders of the company have two very distinct personalities. I used this as inspiration for their logo. It shows their distinct almost clashing viewpoints while rounding out to these two

individuals with a common goal. I also created a way for them to represent themselves and their individual voices. The “icons” I developed relate to player icons in video games. I began with the first two icons for the founding members and have created three new icons as new website contributors have been added.

One of the first areas that 80P’s new branding has been used for is their soon to be released website. I created the design for their website based on the branding I had created. On the home page I included an I3M which allows for scrolling images and information.

Underneath is dynamic blog style teasers for new content as well as space for twitter feeds and advertising. The video and article areas of the website are separated by the icons of the people who make them.

The ACE website was very challenging due to minimal branding provided. They also required four distinct and complex sections of the website that acted independently from one another. I created

icons and colour coding based on the requirements of each section that fit well together. The home page allows users to navigate the main site or access the more in depth sections.

Displayed is an example of the prepress files for an invitation I designed. It was for the launch of a paint line at Braid Flooring. The invite looked like a paint can and was debossed on the front as well as custom dye cut.

Palatino is an easy to read and popular typeface. It was designed by German typeface designer Hermann Zapf, who also created Optima. It was first released in 1948 by the Linotype foundry. Zapf eventually extended it to Latin, Greek and Cyrillic character sets. Palatino is available in a wide variety of weights and variations. The font was named after an Italian calligrapher, Giambattista Palatino. Palatino has a humanist influence and a caligraphic grace to it.

In 1984 Palatino was one of the typefaces originally included by Apple in the Macintosh computer. It was a very popular, until it began to be replaced by Times Roman. Palatino remains one of the most widely-used typefaces and has been adapted to virtually every type of technology. It is known as one of the ten most used serif typefaces. Zapf has created several typefaces that relate to Palatino.

Yulin Wang

About the Author:Yulin Wang is an instructor in the Visual Communications department, Medicine Hat College, teaching graphic design. His paintings have been exhibited extensivly in the United States, Canada and China. He recieved his Bachelor of Fine Art from Nanjing College of Arts in China in 1988. Mr. Wang studied at the University of Texas at El Paso, Texas and later at New Mexico State University, New Mexico. Where he earned his MA and MFA degrees. In 1996 Mr. Wang was awarded NMSU College of Art and Sciences Award, by New Mexico State University, New Mexico USA and 1999 he was awarded a Visual Arts Creation Grant from Canada Council for the arts.

I began designing this book cover by creating a visually interesting graphic image. As I was placing the type I decided to make lines representing the guides I used.The guides tie the image and type to the graphic design concept of the book by referencing the process used to develop it.

This banner stand was created for the International Minerals Innovation Institute. The challenge was to highlight all organizations involved without giving too much emphasis to one group or organization.

Due to the diversity of groups involved the banner allowed for visual references to minerals in a broad sense, with no emphasis placed on a particular group of minerals.

The invitation for the Premier’s Golf Tournament allowed me work with branding elements from the Saskatchewan Party. It challenged me to work within the existing branding guidelines while still making a visually pleasing invite.

I also had challenges with organizing the photos and names of so many people in a small space, this solution allows for many people to be displayed in a way that is well organized.

I created the entire corporate identity manual for Sakitawak Development Corporation. I studied the brand elements and a few examples of their uses as well as interviewed the original designer of the brand and it’s elements.

Based on that I was able to come to an understanding of the brand and effectively write about it. I worked hard on laying out the manual in a way that was both informative and visually interesting.

The pop Up Portrait studio was an idea I had for the Visual Communications grad show at Medicine Hat College. I came up with the original idea for this campeign and while I did have help from other students in it’s development and exicution I played a major role in it’s success. The campeign consisted of creating a giant frame and bringing it to events.

Then inviting people to get their portrait taken in the frame and coming to the Grad show to see their picture displayed. After developing the initial idea I planned the events and took on the responsibility of editing and printing all the images on a large format digital printer. I also helped with the building of the frame and display on which the images were presented.
