Welcome Kindy 2017

It was wonderful to see our 105 Kindy students happily begin school.

you feel welcomed as a part of this strong community.

Infectious Illnesses

This week a note went home about infectious illnesses. As we have children with low immunity and

pregnant women in our community, please keep your child at home if they have chicken pox, gastro,

measles/mumps and any other infectious disease. Please inform the office of any infectious illness so

that we can inform parents/carers and staff. Thank you for your cooperation and assistance in keeping

everyone healthy.

Deputy Principals’ Report

Kindergarten News Congratulations Kindergarten students! We are delighted with the settled start they have made to new school and class routines. Our thanks to all families for your support and assistance in this exciting transition and to the P&C, for their highly successful ‘Cheers and Tears’ Morning Tea. The Playmates lunchtime program is highlighting the mentoring skills of our Year 5 leaders and the Kindergarten students are learning new games and school expectations through play. All students are commended for their eager participation in the program. Scripture/Ethics Classes for all students K-6 will commence next Tuesday 14 February. Students will attend classes in accordance with preferences provided by parents. These include Protestant, Catholic, Ethics and Jewish instruction. Students attending ‘non-scripture’ classes will complete quiet activities as no formal lessons are conducted at this time. Class Parents Nominations are invited from parents who may wish to support class teachers in the role of ‘Class Parent’. In this position, you will liaise with the class teacher to provide assistance with administrative tasks and organise social events. A note explaining the role was sent home this week and we look forward to hearing from interested parents. Getting Home Safely K-2 Please assist us to ensure your child’s safety after school by promptly completing the ‘Getting Home Safely’ note, sent home this week. Please notify your child’s class teacher should arrangements change throughout the year. Book Club A huge thank you to Mrs Jodi Fielden, who will be coordinating Book Club this year. Orders for Issue 1 are due in by 17 February and parents/carers can pay online or put cash into the Book Club box in the office. http://www.scholastic.com.au/schools/bookclub/ Happy reading!

PSSA Sport and Recreational Swimming for Term 1 This Friday we will continue to select our PSSA teams and begin training for our first round of competition which begins next week. Please note that there is a cost associated with participation in PSSA sports of $100 which covers the two terms of PSSA summer sport participation, including transport and ground fees. Students who have been placed into a summer sports team will receive the permission note and PSSA Code of Conduct which must be signed and returned with payment before the competition commences on Friday 17 February. All other students will be placed into a school sports group. The only other option for this term is a Year 3 - 6 swimming squad which is aimed at intermediate swimmers. ‘Sign up notes’ for swimming will go home in the next few days and this activity will commence next Friday. Swimming Carnival Update Today's Swimming Carnival for Years 3 and 4 (and registered Year 2 students) was postponed due to the wet weather and possibility of thunderstorms. The Years 3 and 4 Swimming Carnival (and registered Year 2 students) will now be held on Monday 13 February. At this stage, the Years 5 and 6 Swimming Carnival tomorrow will go ahead tomorrow as planned. Please see the program of events further on. The times are an approximation, depending on the number of competitors for each event. Thank to Mr Elsley for all of his hard work with the organisation of the carnival. Thank you also to Oleg and Larissa who continue to be the backbone of our swimming program. Class swimming for 1C, 2PT, 3E, 4T, 2G and 3CV will be cancelled this Thursday and a 'make up' lesson will be held in Week 10.

House Captains 2017 Congratulations to the following Year 6 students who have been voted in as Sports House and Vice-House Captains. Their speeches were impressive and we know they will be dedicated to the role. On Tuesday at our first Years 3-6 assembly we will badge our Sports Captains, Chess, Band and Strings Captains for 2017.

Library

Welcome back!!

Here are some handy library tips and tricks for the start of the year:

For all students, please remember to bring your library bag each week to borrow. This protects

your books from getting damaged and keeps them together so they do not get lost. These are

available to purchase from the school uniform shop.

You can log into your Oliver account from home to search for books in our library, make

reservations, write book reviews and even check which books you still have on loan to renew

them! Go to: library.det.nsw.edu.au and sign in with your school computer log in details. This is

also where important library information is posted. This will be also be shown in more detail in

upcoming library lessons.

The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge begins on March 6 and finishes on August 25. We will

update you with information closer to the date. See their website for more information:

Happy reading!

Information for parents, guardians and students

Our school has partnered with Transport for NSW to use the new online process for you to

submit school travel applications.

This means we will be able to process your applications online, making it easier and faster for

parents, guardians and students to apply for school travel.

Applications for school travel in 2017 are now open, including for travel to Mascot and Green

Square station and for private ferries. Parents, guardians and students are encouraged to

apply as soon as they are able via:

Applications for 2017 school travel are now open via www.transportnsw.info/school-students

A new application is required when:

applying for a School Opal card or travel pass for the first time,

enrolling in Kindergarten, or

requesting an additional entitlement as a result of a shared parental

responsibility situation.

You will need to do an update application if the student has a current school travel pass and:

is progressing from Year 2 to Year 3,

is progressing from Year 6 to Year 7, or

changes address, or

changes school or campus.

Already have a School Opal card or travel pass?

When you’ve updated, and you are eligible for free school travel next year, Transport for

NSW will send you an email confirmation once your application has been processed. For

travel in rural or regional NSW, we’ll also inform your nominated transport operator(s).

If you already have a School Opal card that does not need updating, or you’ve successfully

re-applied, the Opal card will automatically be updated for travel next year. Do not throw it

out as you’ll be able to use it when the school year starts in 2017.

If you currently have a printed travel pass provided by your transport operator, a new

pass will be will be ready at the beginning of the new school year.

THURSDAY’S WELCOME BACK MORNING TEA

It was lovely to meet so many parents at the annual Cheers ’n Tears/ Welcome Back Morning Tea. As

always, the morning tea was a fabulous opportunity to welcome all our new families across the school.

Thanks to everyone who attended, including the P&C convenors and representatives and other mums

and dads who came along to meet new parents and catch up with old friends. Thanks to all the parents

who assisted with the catering and thanks to Natalie Brandon, Sarah Burnett and Ken Nicol for their

assistance in planning and co-ordinating the morning.

P&C WEBSITE

Don’t forget the P&C website is a one-stop shop for all P&C matters as well as finding information about

the School’s co-curricular and extra-curricular activities that are managed and operated solely by the

P&C and its sub-committees.

Please have a look at the website at www.lpspandc.org.au and any feedback you may have is most

welcome.

INVITATION TO ALL PARENTS AND CARERS - P&C AGM/GENERAL

MEETING

The P&C’s Annual General Meeting will be held in March in the staff room. All parents and carers are

invited to attend. Details will be posted shortly.

At the AGM, the 2016 Annual Reports will be presented, and office-bearers and sub-committee

representatives will be elected. We welcome nominations for all positions. Taking an active role in

the P&C is very rewarding. It is also a great way to get to know other parents and a good opportunity to

learn more about the school. It is vital that these volunteer roles are filled.

Our first General Meeting for the year will immediately follow the AGM. For those of you who are new

parents/carers to our school, we would like to welcome you to attend P&C meetings, not only so that we

can hear from you, but also so that you can learn more about the school and its positive attitudes

towards students and their families. Our P&C meetings are relaxed and we welcome discussion on

issues. It is through our active P&C that we are able to work with the Principal, teachers and staff to

create a positive school environment and to create policies which reflect the attitudes and values of the

entire school community.

All Convenors are well supported by the Principal, Deputy Principals, P&C Executive and other parents

on the Committees.

Below is a summary of our 2016 Executive Members and Sub-Committee Convenors, and the current

status of nominations for those positions in 2017.

Here is a description of some of the roles with no nominees to date:

2017 P&C EXECUTIVE:

Assistant Secretary

The primary responsibilities of the Assistant Secretary are to carry out the administrative tasks relating to

meetings, ensure minutes are taken and distributed; distribute and respond to mail; and work alongside

their fellow Executive to make important decisions regarding the P&C’s planning, meetings and

expenditure.

2017 P&C SUB-COMMITTEES:

LEAF Convenors

The LEAF Committee organises our 2 main LEAF events - Clean Up Australia Day and the National

Tree Planting Day. These initiatives are great school community events whereby volunteers get involved

in helping keep our school clean and green.

Social Committee Convenors

The Social & Fundraising Committee organises events throughout the school year. Whilst some of these

events encompass a fundraising component, all of them are planned to foster social relationships for

parents and children to flourish and to provide them with the opportunity to feel connected to their school

community. Whilst each event throughout the year is delegated to a specific Class or School Year group,

this Sub-Committee oversees each event. This is a great Sub-Committee to be a part of if you want to

get to know your school community and if you enjoy a sense of pride and success knowing you have

given something positive back to your children and the school.

Clothing Pool Convenor

The Clothing Pool Convenor is well-supported by the paid Clothing Pool Manager and is responsible for:

Assisting with volunteers and rostering

Approving the Clothing Pool Manager's hours and timesheets

Approving invoices for payment and checking statements from suppliers

Assisting in the Clothing Pool when required (i.e. during busy times like the summer to winter

changeover)

Representing the Clothing Pool at Kindy Orientation and the Cheers ‘n Tears Welcome Morning

Tea

If you are interested in nominating yourself for any of these positions, please email me at

[email protected].

Wishing you all the best of luck for the school year ahead!

Strings

Welcome Back Strings Ensembles What a wonderful Monday afternoon we had. Our Amadeus group is ENORMOUS and the parents were a terrific help – thank you! Mozart is Term 2. Bach and Vivaldi have made inroads on their pieces so we are in for some very fine music this year. Taking your music to your tutor will also help with progress, so please continue to do this. Parents of children who attend LAC must notify the staff and complete the relevant forms. If you don’t do this, the LAC staff are not allowed to take your child to their lesson. 12 February – last day for early bird discount on fees. 3 March - Coloured Strings Day. No performances are required but we are hoping to raise lots of money! All members are welcome to become part of our committee. There is very little to do, other than provide a bit of help at the busier times of year, such as Music Camp and Presentation Day. We are both looking forward to hearing wonderful things this year, so persevere and enjoy the ride! Sarah Turner and Marianne Kopeinig - String co-convenors. [email protected]

Chess Club has started off well with an usually orderly election for our 2017 Chess Captains - congratulations Jannah, Olivia, Kailash and Bryan! Miss Mustaca gave her Welcome Speech and then it was straight into it for our hordes. For our newest members it looked for all the world like they had been there for years. Our thanks to Mr Smith and Mrs Sian for allowing us use of their classrooms. Eric Tse Chess Coordinator [email protected]
